Diet for hemorrhoids with bleeding and anal fissures: important rules, sample menu and diet

Diet for acute hemorrhoids is an effective element of treatment, promoting the restoration of the body and a mandatory addition to drug treatment.

By regulating your diet and following a diet, you can achieve:

  • Normalization of intestinal motor function;
  • Normal rhythm of bowel movements;
  • Softening stool;
  • Reducing their volume;
  • Minimizing damage to the mucous membrane and hemorrhoids during the passage of feces;
  • Avoid bleeding;
  • Avoid spreading inflammation over large areas;
  • Minimizing gas formation;
  • Avoid bowel movements that are too frequent, which puts strain on the circulatory network in the pelvic area.

Is a diet necessary for inflammation of hemorrhoidal veins?

You can learn about what hemorrhoids are and why they become inflamed and fall out from the article by our specialist.
Additionally, we recommend reading our expert’s article on the basics of proper nutrition for hemorrhoids and the principles of creating a balanced diet.

Diet for hemorrhoids in women and men should be included in the overall treatment package, since poor nutrition, which causes constipation, is one of the causes of inflammation of the hemorrhoidal veins. Therefore, without choosing the optimal diet, it will be difficult to establish bowel movements.

When eating certain foods, blood flow may occur to the vessels of the pelvis and perineum. This leads to the fact that the venous system becomes overfilled with blood, and after a while hemorrhoidal bumps appear.

By following a diet, you can prevent the development of hemorrhoids, and also prevent constipation, which leads to additional problems with the disease.

A diet for the treatment of hemorrhoids should be prescribed only by an experienced doctor, since the diet chosen is balanced and healthy. It should not cause additional discomfort or interfere with the intake of required vitamins, macro- and microelements into the body.

Physical exercise

Stagnation of blood in the pelvic area negatively affects the condition of the body and can increase pain.

To minimize the load on the rectum, you should sit less , especially on a hard and uncomfortable surface, and move more. It is advisable to sleep on your back, face up.

Yoga exercises and light gymnastics are useful in treating hemorrhoids

Light gymnastics or a short warm-up are required . Exercises for acute hemorrhoids are aimed at strengthening the muscles of the pelvis and abdominal wall.

When lying on your back, the “Scissors” and “Bicycle” exercises are useful.

The diet menu and exercises for acute hemorrhoids can be selected in accordance with the individual characteristics and taste preferences of the patient, taking into account the basic recommendations of specialists.

Proper nutrition: basic principles

When choosing a diet for inflammation of hemorrhoidal veins, you should consider not only what you can eat with hemorrhoids, but also a certain food intake regimen that should be followed.

The first rule of proper nutrition is to eat at approximately the same time every day. You should not skip breakfast, because the morning meal should be the most nutritious. Thanks to this, the functioning of all organs of the gastrointestinal tract system will improve, and bowel movements will be regular and “soft”.

The second rule is to drink water properly. You need to drink clean water per day in quantities of up to 1.5 liters (or more). You will also have to forget about unhealthy and fatty foods and give up alcohol.

Read about how hemorrhoids and alcohol are connected, and what the consequences of uncontrolled drinking of alcoholic beverages for this proctological disease are in the article by our specialist.

An individual diet is selected for each type of hemorrhoid. This depends on the stage of inflammation of the hemorrhoids, the course of the disease and complications of the pathology.

Hemorrhoids with anal fissures: nutritional choices

The diet for hemorrhoids and fissures should exclude fatty foods and consist of fiber and healthy proteins.

Prohibited dishes on the table for hemorrhoidal fissures are presented in the table.

Products nameWhy not use
Rice, semolinaCompacts stool
Sweet carbonated water, thick jellyThey disrupt the tone of the intestinal walls, provoke flatulence, and strengthen the stool.
Fatty meat dishesProvoke a rush of blood flow to the intestines, aggravate the inflammatory process
Garlic, turnips, onions, potatoes in large quantitiesLead to irritation of the intestinal walls
Dogwood, blueberries, grapesPromotes fermentation, has an astringent effect

A balanced diet for hemorrhoids and anal fissure excludes alcoholic beverages, fresh baked goods, chocolate, full-fat milk, and fermented baked milk.

For a rectal fissure, the diet should include:

  • oatmeal, buckwheat, pearl barley porridge. These cereals help regulate the balance of microelements and make the stool “softer”;
  • pumpkin dishes, beetroot, cauliflower, cucumber. Improves intestinal motility;
  • more yogurt, kefir, homemade yoghurts. Restore intestinal microflora;
  • a lot of dried fruits (dried apricots, prunes), honey. Normalize water balance;
  • bananas, apples. Improves intestinal motility.

Among drinks, it is better to give preference to green tea (not strong), fruit and vegetable fruit drinks (freshly squeezed).

For hemorrhoids and fissures, you should definitely eat wheat and oat bran. They will soften the stool and make defecation much easier.

Food for bleeding nodes

The diet for bleeding hemorrhoids is based on food that does not cause blood flow, and therefore improves the patient’s condition. For bleeding hemorrhoids, the following are strictly prohibited:

  • smoked dishes,
  • food cooked in a frying pan;
  • snacks in the form of chips, crackers;
  • hot spices;
  • mayonnaise and sauce additives.

Nutrition for hemorrhoids with bleeding should be comprehensive; in case of pathology, it is useful to consume:

  • puree soups;
  • cooked fish in a multi-oven and meat in a double boiler;
  • healthy cereals (buckwheat, oatmeal, pearl barley);
  • vegetable salads seasoned with natural oils.

There are those products for hemorrhoids with bleeding that are relatively prohibited and are sometimes allowed in the treatment of the disease (maximum 1 time per week).

These include:

  • semolina porridge;
  • baking;
  • potato delights;
  • pasta.

The diet for hemorrhoids with bleeding excludes alcohol and soda, and allows freshly squeezed juices and green tea.

During exacerbations

The diet for exacerbation of hemorrhoids should be aimed at activating the intestines and getting rid of toxins. Eating bananas, oranges, apples and apricots helps a lot with this. Also, the menu should consist of vegetables, such as:

  • carrot;
  • pumpkin;
  • broccoli;
  • cucumbers;
  • beet.

Nutrition for exacerbation of hemorrhoids also consists of egg-based dishes. Omelette is considered very useful. It is recommended to eat more lean meat (rabbit, chicken). You can even eat rice porridge cooked in water, but you cannot add oil to the dish. Honey must be included in the diet. Doctors advise replacing bread with bread or egg crackers. Among the drinks, compotes made from dried fruits, as well as low-fat fermented milk products, are of great benefit.

As with other types of hemorrhoids, the diet during exacerbation excludes alcohol and smoking.

After hemorrhoid removal

We advise you to read our expert’s article dedicated to such a common question among patients, how can you drink coffee with hemorrhoids and after removal of hemorrhoids.

There is a separate diet developed after removal of hemorrhoids by surgical excision. You should not eat food on the first day after surgery. Only drinking plenty of water is allowed. A day after the manipulations, food is allowed to be introduced, but it should be eaten in small portions, distributed over 5-6 meals.

Meals after hemorrhoid surgery consist of several dishes:

  • vegetable-based puree soups;
  • cutlets made by steaming or in a multi-oven;
  • thin oatmeal, buckwheat porridge without dressing;
  • cottage cheese casserole or pure cottage cheese.

A similar menu is used for a week. Then the diet is enriched with stewed vegetables, lean meat or fish (steamed), apples with honey and cinnamon are introduced.

A list of what you should not eat if you have hemorrhoids after surgery is presented in the table.

ProductsReason for ban
The fruits of gooseberries, apples, oranges, cabbage, raspberries, legumes, radishes.Contains coarse fibers.
Coca-Cola, kvass, lemonades, coffee, strong tea.Contains caffeine and is harmful to the body
Garlic, radish, onionContains irritating substances
Meat of pig, sheep, duck, gooseDifficult to digest in the intestines.

The duration of the postoperative period is approximately 30 days. At this time, a diet is needed, as it will help normalize stools, improve blood circulation, and prevent relapses of the disease. In addition, any person on a diet will be able to lose excess weight.

The diet for internal hemorrhoids after surgery should completely exclude alcohol-containing drinks, cocktails, nicotine and quick snacks.

Useful products during the acute stage of the disease

Slag-free diets are considered the most effective for exacerbation of hemorrhoids. Their essence comes down to consuming large amounts of foods containing dietary fiber. These are usually vegetables, fruits and cereal dishes. Among vegetables, beets, pumpkin, carrots, broccoli, cucumbers and tomatoes have the greatest effect. It is useful to eat fruits such as apricots, apples, oranges, bananas.

The diet of a patient with hemorrhoids should include healthy foods.

During the period of exacerbation of the disease, the patient’s daily diet should include the following products:

  • low-fat poultry (turkey, chicken breasts);
  • Lenten fish dishes;
  • honey;
  • fermented milk products (kefir, fermented baked milk, yogurt);
  • fruits and vegetables;
  • dried fruits (figs, prunes, dried apricots);
  • bran bread and diet bread;
  • egg omelet.

During this period, a person suffering from exacerbation of hemorrhoids needs to be especially careful in consuming salt, sugar and spices. It is advisable to reduce the usual dose of dairy products (not to be confused with fermented milk), eggs and greens.

A person suffering from acute hemorrhoids should take special care in consuming salt, sugar and hot spices.

During the period of complications of the disease, a proven method of normalizing the process of bowel cleansing is a glass of whey taken in the morning on an empty stomach.

List of permitted products

There is a special list of what you need to eat for hemorrhoids in order to both get rid of excess weight and improve the condition of hemorrhoidal veins. The diet for severe constipation and hemorrhoids is based on products that normalize intestinal function, facilitate bowel movements and relieve pain. Choose a balanced diet so that it contains a sufficient amount of vitamins and other useful substances.

We also recommend reading the material from a proctologist, which describes in detail how to use beets for hemorrhoids and how the disease can be treated with the help of this popular vegetable.

What diet will be chosen for hemorrhoids depends on the type of pathology, but there is a general list of products that will be useful for any type of disease.

Nutrition for hemorrhoids and severe constipation should consist of:

  • green teas (rosehip infusions, bran infusions);
  • dried fruits (raisins, dried apricots, prunes);
  • beetroot dishes, fresh peas (canned ones are not allowed), celery, turnips, cauliflower;
  • vegetable broth soups,
  • dietary meats;
  • cereals (buckwheat, wheat, pearl barley, barley);
  • soft-boiled eggs, omelettes;
  • honey, broth;
  • caviar from vegetables, soaked herring, jellied fish, meat.

Among the sweets, the menu for hemorrhoids allows biscuits or crackers. A little kefir is allowed, low-fat cottage cheese and mild cheeses are recommended.

What can you eat if you have hemorrhoids?

The basis of the diet for this disease is vegetables and fruits, as well as grains. Buckwheat, pearl barley, oatmeal, barley porridge are useful. But it is better to exclude rice and semolina from the menu. Wheat bran is also a useful product, but during exacerbation of hemorrhoids it is difficult to tolerate, so their quantity is limited to 60 g per day.

You should choose bread without yeast, from wholemeal flour, or with bran. It is not recommended to eat fresh baked goods; it is advisable to slightly dry a slice of bread before eating. Cookies for hemorrhoids are eaten only of the biscuit type.

There are also restrictions on some products: pasta made from durum wheat can sometimes be afforded in small quantities, potatoes are also not food for every day.

You can eat any vegetables; in their raw form, those that irritate the intestines with coarse fibers and contribute to bloating are not healthy. We are talking about salads made from white cabbage or radishes. Preference should be given to beets, zucchini, carrots, other types of cabbage, including sea cabbage, cucumbers and chopped tomatoes.

Of the heat treatment methods, only fried, smoked and canned foods are prohibited. You can cook dishes in a double boiler, microwave, oven, but not in a frying pan. Fresh vegetables and fruits can also be consumed. Among fruits, preference should be given to apples, plums, apricots, grapes, citrus fruits, bananas, as well as dried fruits: raisins, dried apricots, prunes. It is important that the fruits are fully ripe.

For hemorrhoids, it is allowed to eat lean meat: beef, veal, turkey, chicken, rabbit. From seafood and river fish, it is better to choose hake, cod, pike perch, pike, bream, and carp. You can prepare dishes from these products by steaming or in the oven; you can also stew and boil them.

All vegetable oils are beneficial to the body, especially flaxseed and olive. They can be put in salads instead of high-calorie dressings such as mayonnaise.

Hot and spicy seasonings can be replaced with parsley, marjoram, dill, cumin, basil, cilantro.

Fresh fermented milk products are also necessary in the diet, especially those enriched with lacto- and bifidobacteria, which improve intestinal function.

Absolute prohibitions

The diet for external hemorrhoids, like the diet for hemorrhoids with blood, does not allow the consumption of foods that increase gas formation and slow down intestinal function. Therefore, you should try to adhere to a diet that excludes:

  • blueberries, quince, barberry;
  • bananas, potatoes, onions, legumes, garlic, mushrooms;
  • hard-boiled and fried eggs;
  • pasta;
  • cream cakes, pastries, chocolate products;
  • canned, smoked foods and pickles;
  • semolina, rice

Also, people with hemorrhoids need to exclude baked goods, pastries, and puff pastry dishes. When preparing dishes, it is recommended to reduce the use of salt, black and red pepper and other seasonings.

By knowing which foods to remove from your diet, you can get rid of hemorrhoids and its symptoms much faster.

Find out what you can’t eat if you have hemorrhoids, what foods are on the list of prohibited or undesirable foods, in our author’s material.

What foods should you avoid?

During complications of hemorrhoids, the patient’s digestive system must work like a clock.

If you have hemorrhoids, you should not eat foods that cause constipation, diarrhea and increased gas formation.

Constipation, diarrhea and increased gas formation will bring additional troubles, so you should limit yourself in consuming the following foods:

  • fatty meats and fish;
  • smoked dishes;
  • canned food and marinades;
  • fried food;
  • legumes;
  • potato dishes;
  • rice;
  • semolina;
  • White cabbage;
  • radishes and radishes;
  • sweets, pastries and chocolate;
  • pasta;
  • jelly;
  • alcoholic drinks;
  • strong tea and coffee.

A proper diet during hemorrhoids involves a complete abstinence from some foods (alcohol, smoked foods, canned food, etc.), while others can be replaced with a less dangerous analogue. Instead of white bread, for example, eat bran bread, and replace fatty meats with lean ones.

Traditional medicine against hemorrhoids

Many folk remedies can bring relief from acute hemorrhoids, but before using them, consultation with a doctor is required. Special herbal decoctions that have a laxative effect will help normalize stool and intestinal motility.

To prepare the decoction, take one tablespoon:

  • crushed valerian root;
  • buckthorn herbs;
  • sweet clover

Pour the mixture into a glass of boiling water and leave in a thermos for an hour. Drink half a glass before bed.

Dogwood jam made from 1 kg of berries and 1 kg of sugar will help improve the condition of a patient with acute hemorrhoids. It is taken one tablespoon per day for a month.

Popular recipes

To ensure that the diet for hemorrhoids and constipation is not the same, you can add healthy and nutritious dishes to it. For example, food for acute hemorrhoids includes a delicious dessert of apples and cinnamon. It is very simple to prepare this dish:

  • take 1-2 apples, remove the core from the fruit, chop them;

The diet for hemorrhoids is aimed at reducing trauma to the nodes from feces. For these purposes, a diet with a high fiber content and a strict drinking regime is used. Meat products are consumed boiled, stewed, baked. The menu includes soups and vegetable salads. Desserts include fruit jellies, mousses, soufflés, and soaked dried fruits.

We recommend: What can be done after surgery to remove hemorrhoids - what recommendations should be followed

Principles of nutrition

The main objectives of the “antihemorrhoidal” diet are to restore impaired intestinal functions (eliminate constipation or diarrhea), normalize blood flow in the pelvic organs, and increase vascular elasticity.

General principles of nutrition:

  1. Maintain drinking regime. Considering that the density of stool depends on the amount of liquid consumed, it is important to consume at least 2 liters of water per day to thin the stool. With a lack of drinking resources, the transit of chyme through the intestines slows down. This leads to compaction of feces and damage to the veins of the anal canal (from bowel movements).

To combat constipation (especially long-term constipation), drink a third of the daily volume of water on an empty stomach (in 1-1.5 hours). The remaining portion of liquid is consumed throughout the day (in small sips).

  1. Enrich your daily diet with fiber. Dietary fiber is the basis of dietary nutrition for hemorrhoids. Fiber, by increasing the volume of feces, promotes gentle bowel movements. Along with this, pectins have an astringent, enveloping and protective effect on the digestive tract.

Remember, the diet of people suffering from hemorrhoids should consist of 50% plant fiber.

  1. Eliminate alcohol from the daily menu. Alcoholic drinks dehydrate the patient's body, promoting dehydration of water from the intestines. In case of hemorrhoidal disease, it is permissible to consume alcohol only during the period of remission (in minimal doses).
  2. Follow a fractional diet. The optimal frequency of meals is 6 times a day. Preference should be given to liquid crushed foods: pureed soups, fermented milk products, boiled porridges, fruit smoothies. A fractional diet is indicated in the acute and postoperative period (to reduce pressure on the intestinal walls during bowel movements).
  3. Chew food thoroughly. This will prevent large particles of food from entering the esophagus and further into the stomach and intestines, which can damage the mucous lining of the large intestine. For good digestion, chew solid foods 30-40 times.
  4. Consume food in small doses. The size of a single serving should not exceed 250 grams. A dosed diet will help relieve the gastrointestinal tract, and, as a result, reduce pressure on the walls of the anal canal.
  5. Control the temperature of food. For cracks or prolapses of the intestine, it is important to consume warm food (15-60 degrees). Cold or hot foods irritate the walls of the organ, worsening its evacuation function.

Remember, to maintain intestinal tone, it is important to combine a healthy diet with moderate physical activity (excluding heavy lifting).

Among the preferred sports are: swimming, gymnastics, tennis, race walking, jogging, roller skating, skiing, and skating. They improve blood supply in the pelvic area, train the cardiovascular system, and eliminate peripheral edema. In addition, these sports improve the physical performance of the body, strengthen the immune system, and prevent the appearance of hemorrhoids.

Rules for eating

Therapeutic nutrition for hemorrhoids depends on individual health factors. Stages of disease development and the presence of concomitant diseases. The condition of the gastrointestinal tract is also important. Therefore, the diet and menu are determined by the doctor.

Every day nutrition for hemorrhoids involves following the following rules:

  1. Food should not be thick or greasy.
  2. It is necessary to use a fractional method of eating.
  3. Food is served warm.
  4. It is necessary to drink approximately 2 liters of liquid every day, in accordance with the drinking regimen.
  5. Use infusions of laxative herbs, preferably at night.
  6. Food must contain the required amount of fiber.
  7. Eat meals at approximately the same time.
  8. For the first 2 days of the diet, the menu includes lightly saturated broths and freshly prepared juices.
  9. On days 3-4, liquid porridges with skim milk are used: barley, oatmeal, buckwheat.
  10. Daily consumption of vegetables (fresh and steamed), fruits;
  11. Gradual increase in the proportion of bran in the diet.
  12. Reducing salt content in food.
  13. Low content of meat, fish and seasonings.
  14. Drink kefir or kefir-vegetable cocktails every night.

Diet for hemorrhoids in women

Hemorrhoidal dilatation of the veins of the rectum appears when women have the following risk factors:

  • hereditary weakness of the venous walls;
  • habitual constipation;
  • excess body weight;
  • sedentary lifestyle, especially with prolonged sedentary work;
  • inflammatory processes in the pelvic organs - colitis, salpingitis, cystitis, endometritis;
  • dysbacteriosis;
  • liver diseases;
  • use of drugs for high blood pressure, vasodilators.

There are also nutritional causes of impaired outflow from the venous plexuses of the intestine. Most often, patients with hemorrhoids eat high-calorie, fatty foods; their menu is replete with meat and devoid of fresh vegetables and fruits.

In such cases, persistent constipation occurs, increasing pressure in the vasculature of the pelvis, which leads to dilation of the veins and stagnation of blood in them. If you have at least one of the risk factors and eat a lot of unhealthy food, the development of hemorrhoids becomes almost inevitable.

Nutrition helps to avoid this disease and its complications (bleeding, inflammation, pinched node, acute thrombosis). It involves the exclusion of foods that cause a rush of blood to the intestines, inhibiting its seduction. The diet uses mainly plant foods, fresh fermented milk drinks, and boiled fish. A prerequisite is a sufficient supply of clean drinking water.

Special diet after surgery

Surgical intervention for hemorrhoids is often required at the last stage of its development. During this period, hemorrhoids are very large and bleed. After the operation, a rehabilitation period begins, during which you should follow the nutritional rules even more carefully and patiently.

On the first day after surgery, the patient is usually prescribed a daily fast. Defecation during this period is undesirable. You should drink more fluid. In the future, the patient is recommended to switch to liquid soups and cereals.

After discharge from the hospital, the first month should exclude:

• peas, white cabbage; • rice and semolina, pasta, jelly; • radish, turnip, sorrel; • tea (including green), coffee; • dairy products; • wheat bread, baked goods; • semi-finished products, products with preservatives and food additives; • lemonades; • eggs; • meat broths; • mushrooms; • salo; • lingonberry, blueberry, dogwood, pomegranate, pear.

The substances contained in these products expand the venous network and disrupt blood flow in the anus. Often provoke itching and burning.

Even after successful treatment, patients need throughout their lives:

  • Eat small meals (small portions and often);
  • Limit yourself in the abuse of hot, spicy, salty, canned, smoked foods;
  • Constantly drink mineral water;
  • Use less fat, more fiber.

Features of the diet after hemorrhoidectomy

For advanced and complicated forms of hemorrhoids, surgical treatment is performed. To date, modern minimally invasive methods of hemorrhoidectomy have been developed, which have a short rehabilitation period. Nevertheless, diet plays a very important role in this case, since intestinal trauma can significantly delay the recovery period.

  • On the first day. Immediately after the operation, eating any food is prohibited. You should drink enough liquid: rosehip decoction, weak tea with sugar.
  • From the second day. The diet after surgery for hemorrhoids allows eating small portions on the second day. Mostly in the diet they use vegetable purees (potato, squash, pumpkin), cereals without a rough shell, dried bread, and fermented milk products. Meat dishes are prepared from lean meats. Culinary processing in this case is boiling or steaming. Juices with pulp are shown, preferably plum or peach. The same therapeutic diet is recommended for bleeding hemorrhoids.
  • In two to three weeks. During this period, you can switch to a diet for patients with chronic hemorrhoids. Sometimes deviations from the diet are allowed, but it is imperative to monitor bowel function and avoid constipation.

During rehabilitation after hemorrhoidectomy, cereals with coarse fiber, nuts, legumes, radishes, cabbage, and bran are excluded from the menu. Also contraindicated are foods that cause constipation: flour products, cakes with cream, pasta. Spicy seasonings, canned and pickled foods are not recommended.

Proper nutrition for hemorrhoids with constipation has a positive effect on the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract. At the same time, such a diet contains a sufficient amount of essential nutrients, vitamins and minerals and has a general healing effect. According to doctors, a special menu rich in dietary fiber promotes regular bowel movements and prevents exacerbations of the disease. A particularly pronounced effect of the diet can be observed in the first and second degrees of hemorrhoids.

Acceptable menu on days of exacerbation

With the right approach, the manifestations of hemorrhoids subside within 3–4 days. The main task during this period is to control the functioning of the intestines. Nutrition is introduced to eliminate irritation of the mucous membrane and form light fecal masses that do not injure hemorrhoidal cones.
