Antifungal agent GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals SA Clotrimazole cream - reviews

Clotrimazole is prescribed for the treatment of fungal infections of the skin and mucous membranes. This is a topical antifungal agent. Often used to treat the external genitalia. The action of the drug helps to destroy pathogenic microorganisms and alleviate the symptoms of the disease. Not prescribed to patients under twelve years of age. Therapy should be carried out under the supervision of a physician.

Included in the list of the most effective medicines according to the World Health Organization.

Side effects

The most common side effects when using Clotrimazole usually include:

  • the occurrence of areas of skin peeling;
  • the appearance of swelling of the treated tissues;
  • rashes;
  • If the ointment gets into your eyes, rinse them immediately with running water.

On the part of the immune system, anaphylactic shock is likely to occur with hypersensitivity to the components of the drug, as well as symptoms of urticaria and swelling

Contact dermatitis, general skin irritation, increased dryness and pain - all these side effects should attract attention and the drug should be discontinued or replaced with a product that has a slightly different composition and has a similar effect on the affected skin

special instructions

  • Clotrimazole is not used for fungal eye diseases;
  • Do not apply ointment to the skin in the eyelid area;
  • In case of contact with eyes, rinse with water;
  • After applying Clotrimazole, occlusive dressings should not be applied;
  • If after 3 days of treatment with the drug there is no improvement, you should check the correctness of the diagnosis;
  • In case of liver failure, it is necessary to monitor liver function;
  • Clotrimazole preparations are not intended for internal use;
  • If ingested, they may cause poisoning. In such cases, you need to take activated charcoal and consult a doctor;
  • After using the drug, wash your hands with soap;
  • Keep away from children.

In order to use Clotrimazole ointment for thrush, a doctor's prescription is not required. The drug is freely available in pharmacies.

When Clotrimazole (ointment) is used, the instructions for thrush in women do not recommend combining it with other antimycotics, primarily those containing nystatin and natamycin. This is contraindicated due to the reduced activity of clotrimazole.

Sexual life with candidiasis should be interrupted during treatment, since the antifungal agent can provoke an allergic reaction in the partner, and when protected with condoms, it reduces their contraceptive properties.

Baths before applying the solution

Before using Clotrimazole, various foot baths are very useful, which will not only relieve fatigue, but will help get rid of the annoying fungus. These can be mixtures prepared according to folk recipes, or pharmacy versions of herbal infusions, which are recommended to combat the disease in question. Let's highlight the most popular foot baths, which are recommended to be used before Clotrimazole solution:

  1. Dilute tar soap with warm water, add a few tablespoons of sea salt. Take the bath for 10-15 minutes, simply lowering your feet into it.
  2. Mix a few grams of manganese and boric acid in a separate container. Dilute this liquid with 2-3 liters of warm water and dip your feet in it. Massage your feet and nails in water for 5 minutes, then pat dry with a towel.
  3. Combine vinegar essence and pine needle extract in a 1:1 ratio and mix with 5 portions of water. It is allowed to take such a bath for up to 15 minutes, and after it apply Clotrimazole to the affected areas.
  4. Prepare a paste from several heads of garlic (1-2) and dilute it with 2 liters of cold water, put your feet in the bath, take the treatment procedure for 5-7 minutes, after which you are allowed to rinse.

Reviews about the application

Reviews of Clotrimazole tablets (used very often for thrush as prescribed by a gynecologist) are positive, because the drug helps to quickly get rid of the unpleasant symptoms of the disease. According to reviews, another method of use is also effective: applying a thick layer of ointment to a homemade tampon and inserting it into the vagina. The end of the cord should remain outside for ease of removal.

For fungal infections of the feet and toenails, the use of the ointment is continued for another three weeks after the symptoms disappear. Before application, thoroughly rinse and dry damaged skin areas. If you have lichen, you need to make sure that the nature of the disease is not viral. Otherwise, using Clotrimazole is completely useless.

For dermatitis (judging by reviews), the ointment is ineffective, because this disease is not related to fungal infections. Only seborrhea can be successfully treated with Clotrimazole. In this disease, skin irritation is caused by the waste products of the fungus. And if you do not get rid of seborrhea, then a secondary infection may join this unpleasant illness.

Clotrimazole in the treatment of fungus

The main active substance clotrimazole is an element with a wide range of actions. Thanks to him the drug:

  • slows down and then stops the biosynthesis of fungal sterol (the latter is a key component in the production of the parasite's intercellular membrane);
  • destroys the structure of already developed fungal cells, increasing the degree of permeability of their membranes (not only the mycelium dies, but also the spores located on the skin surface);
  • disinfects the surface;
  • partially relieves symptomatic manifestations (swelling, itching, redness).

However, the medicine does not give immediate results, but acts gradually. For this reason, it is necessary to be patient and steadily follow the course of treatment. Clotrimazole anti-fungal solution fights the parasite faster.

Along with this drug, it is possible to use additional funds. For example, taking multivitamin complexes to strengthen the immune system.

As well as other antimycotic drugs (it is better to consult a doctor about this). In any case, an integrated approach will speed up the death of the fungus and recovery will come earlier.

Composition of Clotrimazole

The basis of the drug is the active substance of the same name - clotrimazole. In addition, vaginal tablets with rounded edges contain excipients that form a homogeneous structure. What else is included in Clotrimazole that helps maintain its properties? In small quantities it contains the following ingredients:

  • lactose;
  • potato starch;
  • sodium bicarbonate;
  • adipic acid;
  • colloidal silicon dioxide;
  • magnesium stearate;
  • sodium lauryl sulfate.
  • Clotrimazole ointment - instructions for use for men and women, what the drug helps with
  • Vaginal suppositories Clotrimazole for the treatment of thrush
  • Clotrimazole solution for nail fungus

Contraindications

When treating a number of diseases associated with the possibility of sexual transmission of infection, each partner must undergo a course of therapy at the same time, but this is not a reason to use one remedy. For some, the therapy will pass without consequences, but for others the drug may not be suitable due to individual intolerance

As with any medicine, you should take precautions or check with a specialist for some details. There are contraindications for Clotrimazole: the use of vaginal tablets should be limited or avoided in the following situations:

  • age up to 12 years;
  • sensitivity to the active substance;
  • menstruation period;
  • with bloody vaginal discharge (chronic, irregular);
  • irritation, swelling, rash, blisters, open wounds on the woman’s genitals;
  • cold, fever;
  • nausea, vomiting, diarrhea;
  • back pain.

Analogs

The affordable cost of the domestic drug is one of the advantages of this antifungal agent. Few drugs belonging to its group have the same properties and spectrum of action, and yet there are analogues of Clotrimazole tablets. In cases where it is not possible to buy this medicine at a pharmacy, it can be replaced with similar products containing the same active substance. The following medications are analogues of Clotrimazole:

  • Candide;
  • Kanesten;
  • Kanizon;
  • Kandibene;
  • Ganestan;
  • Funginal.

  • spray.

Note! When choosing the most convenient dosage form, you need to pay attention to the composition. Even if the patient has previously been successfully treated with cream, there may be an allergic reaction to any other form.

Clotrimazole ointment for thrush

The ointment is used quite often. The most popular is the Russian-made product Clotrimazole-Akrikhin.

The advantages of the ointment are obvious, because this dosage form quickly covers the mucous membrane and has a softening effect on dry, damaged areas.

The cost of the ointment is not high, the effectiveness reaches 90%.

Cream Clotrimazole for thrush

The cream is an effective drug for the treatment of thrush, which is produced with different dosages of the active substance: 1 and 2%.

Instructions for use of Clotrimazole

This drug can be recommended by a doctor for therapy once or as a course, the choice depends on the symptoms and severity of the disease. The appointment should be made individually, after anamnesis and examination. If there are no additional instructions from a specialist, then typical instructions for using Clotrimazole to get rid of an infection look like this:

  1. Read the annotation, which indicates the daily dose and permissible duration of therapy. Compliance with the dosage and time period is mandatory.
  2. Before inserting the tablet into the vagina, observing hygiene standards, you should wash your hands.
  3. For convenience, you should take a suitable position: lie on your back, bend your knees. The vaginal tablet should be inserted with light pressure, but carefully.
  4. Lie in this position for a few more minutes so that the antifungal agent is evenly distributed.

During pregnancy

The period of bearing a child for a woman is associated with the risk of unpleasant sensations. Some are considered normal, while others are undesirable effects that the body can get rid of with the help of medications. Against the background of unstable hormonal levels, an inflammatory process, similar in symptoms to candidal vaginitis, is not uncommon. How to get rid of painful discomfort in the lower abdomen and burning sensation? Use Clotrimazole vaginal tablets during pregnancy, but before doing so, be sure to consult a gynecologist.

During menstruation

If in the later stages Clotrimazole during pregnancy is a way to quickly sanitize the birth canal before the birth of a child, then during menstruation the picture is somewhat different. This drug is not considered effective in preventing infection. Since Clotrimazole is not recommended during menstruation, it is worth starting a therapeutic course either before their onset or at the end of the cycle. The effect of the active substance will be minimal due to the risk of the tablet being washed out, so treatment of thrush with Clotrimazole will not bring the desired result.

Overdose

As a way to prevent diseases caused by fungi - an affordable domestic drug. The use of Clotrimazole vaginal tablets for thrush can promote rapid recovery, but regardless of the diagnosis, discomfort, pain, the recommended dosage should be followed. Exceeding the concentration can cause undesirable reactions, worsening the course of the disease. An overdose of Clotrimazole for a woman’s body can result in consequences such as shortness of breath, fainting, arterial hypotension, and urticaria.

Clotrimazole. Instructions for use

The algorithm for using the product is as follows (for both ointment with cream and solution):

  1. Steam your nails or infected areas in a bath (you can add soda or unscented laundry soap). Steaming is necessary for greater penetration of the composition into the skin. The optimal water temperature is from 45 to 55 degrees. The duration of the procedure is 10-15 minutes.
  2. Trim the nail plate as short as possible and file down its top layer (if the fungus has infected the nail). The surface should be rough.
  3. Apply the composition to the infected area and wait until completely absorbed. You can also coat nearby areas with the composition, including the areas between your fingers. This is necessary for greater reliability and prevention. You need to apply a little bit - if you overdo it and apply too much, irritation may occur. Clotrimazole ointment for nail fungus is best used on the feet, and the solution on the nails.

The procedure is carried out 2-3 times a day. Preferably wearing gloves. Afterwards, wash your hands thoroughly to avoid getting the composition in your eyes. This especially applies to Clotrimazole ointment for nail fungus; reviews say that it is difficult to wash off.

Additional recommendations:

  • For the procedure, you should always use a separate towel, or better yet, disposable napkins.
  • Manicure instruments must also be individual and disinfected both before and after the procedure.
  • Soap must be washed off as thoroughly as possible, otherwise it will neutralize the effect of the drug.

The speed at which the fungus goes away depends on its variety, location, degree of development of the disease and area of infection. In most cases, the entire therapeutic course takes from 2 to 8 weeks.

As reviews about Clotrimazole emphasize, the fungus goes away on average in 1-1.5 months. To prevent relapses, it is worth continuing to apply the product even after recovery - for another 2-3 weeks after completion of the course of treatment.

Use in childhood

The drug can be prescribed to children, even newborns. For example, with diaper fungal dermatitis.

But with some restrictions:

  • A child’s skin is more actively involved in the breathing process than an adult’s, so it is not recommended to apply the medicine to large areas of the skin;
  • Large foci of infection are treated in parts, alternately, 2-3 times a day;
  • The ointment is suitable only for those types of fungal infections that are accompanied by dry skin.

For infected diaper rash in infants, Clotrimazole is used in the form of powders.

What is Clotrimazole

An acute infection or a chronic form of the disease can be quickly treated thanks to a drug from the group of imidazole derivatives. Clotrimazole is a broad-spectrum antifungal agent that is available in the form of vaginal tablets, ointments, suppositories and other dosage forms. The active substance, which has proven effective in the treatment of certain gynecological diseases, disrupts the synthesis of ergosterol, which forms the cell membrane of the fungus, which contributes to its destruction.

A similar effect, when the active component contributes to the deformation of the cell membrane, is demonstrated by Clotrimazole tablets in relation to bacteria. By influencing the production of components that are necessary to strengthen membranes, the drug destroys the vital activity of microorganisms that provoke inflammation of the mucous membranes and skin. The main property of the drug will not manifest itself immediately: the symptoms of the disease of the female reproductive system may continue to bother you for several days after the start of using the medicine until it manifests itself.

Reviews and prices

The drug has been used in medical practice for more than thirty years, but doctors continue to prescribe different dosage forms for the treatment of fungal infections. The effectiveness has been proven through numerous studies. Experts appreciate the possibility of topical use with a low risk of complications.

The average price of 20 milliliters of cream (1%) is 80 rubles. An ointment with a similar volume and concentration costs 100-120 rubles. Six vaginal tablets can be bought for 55-70 rubles.

Clotrimazole ointment for thrush detailed instructions

Clotrimazole is an ointment that helps with thrush. It has a thick consistency. The ointment is applied directly to the labia. The drug is white. It received this shade due to the presence of paraffin, alcohol, purified water and other components. The ointment was developed specifically to combat fungal spores of various origins.

It is usually used for candidiasis. Can be used not only by women, but also by men. It can also be used if fungal diseases begin to develop on the feet, skin and mucous cavities.

Women

  • The ointment is used primarily to combat fungal plaques that provoke microsporia and lichen. The drug has been demonstrating its increased level of effectiveness for a long time.
  • However, in order to overcome the disease, it is necessary to undergo a full course of therapy. It can be a minimum of 5 days and a maximum of 10 days.
  • The duration of treatment will depend on the form of the disease and the degree of its complexity. The effectiveness of the drug is determined by how correctly the patient uses the ointment.

The drug Clotrimazole is manufactured in small tubes with a capacity of 20 ml.

From the very beginning, the first signs of the disease appear in the form of redness, severe burning, and itching in the genital area. If these symptoms occur, you should immediately consult a doctor. Based on the examinations performed, he will be able to make an accurate diagnosis and prescribe the necessary treatment.

During thrush, the drug is used according to the following scheme:

  • The ointment should be applied in a thin layer to the vaginal walls.
  • The drug must be applied no more than once per day.
  • The duration of therapy is 3 days or more.

Before you decide to use the ointment, you must perform important procedures - take a bath or shower. This is necessary so that the infection cannot enter the vagina.

Use the ointment with extreme caution, without violating the rules from the instructions. Simply apply the product in circular motions into the skin

The dosage is approximately 5 g.

How is ointment used for other diseases?

When a specialist has prescribed Clotrimazole for thrush in men, first of all, you need to carefully study the instructions. For the use of ointment to be effective, it should be applied to the genital organ correctly:

  1. Before using the product, you need to perform hygiene, then apply a thin layer of ointment to the problem area.
  2. The drug must be applied carefully, avoiding pressing on the inflamed area.
  3. The frequency of use of the ointment is no more than three times a day.
  4. The course of treatment depends on the stage of the disease. On average it lasts two weeks to one month.
  5. If discomfort appears after the ointment, you should consult your doctor about replacing it with an analogue.

Clotrimazole has a minimal number of contraindications, one of which is high sensitivity to the ingredient of the drug.

Rarely does skin irritation occur after applying the ointment. Allergic reactions are also possible. In this case, the drug should be discontinued and replaced with an analogue. If irritation is present, the question of the advisability of using Clotrimazole is decided by a doctor.

When applying the ointment externally, an overdose is impossible. If the drug accidentally enters the body, the following are possible:

  • abdominal pain;
  • nausea and vomiting;
  • allergy;
  • drowsiness;
  • frequent urination.

Clotrimazole ointment is used primarily for external use. It should be applied to cleansed and dried areas of the affected skin. The product is distributed over the affected surface in an even thin layer using light massaging movements.

When applying the ointment, it is important to lightly touch healthy areas of the skin to completely prevent the spread of infection. The course and order of treatment is prescribed depending on the nature of the pathogen and the type of fungus

Usually this is 2-3 applications of ointment per day for 4 weeks

The course and order of treatment is prescribed depending on the nature of the pathogen and the type of fungus. Usually this is 2-3 applications of ointment per day for 4 weeks.

  • For foot fungus, the duration of treatment is about 1-1.5 months.
  • Multicolored and ringworm – 3-4 weeks.
  • Erythrasma – 2-4 weeks.

Under no circumstances should the course of treatment with Clotrimazole be interrupted, even if the man’s disease no longer manifests itself outwardly.

Clotrimazole ointment for men

A large percentage of fungal diseases occur in lesions of the genital organs. Among men's problems, thrush (candidal balanitis) is distinguished. The disease is caused by fungi of the genus Candida. Thrush is transmitted sexually; the disease is transmitted by one of the partners - a man or a woman. Often candidiasis is not accompanied by pronounced symptoms: sometimes dryness, burning and itching of the genital organ, pain when urinating, and discomfort during sexual intercourse are disturbing.

If you have the listed symptoms or if your partner is ill, you should consult a doctor for a consultation, because an advanced fungal disease can cause the development of prostatitis or chronic diseases of the genitourinary system. To treat candidiasis, doctors often prescribe Clotrimazole for men.

The formulation of the drug in the form of a cream received positive feedback during treatment - a positive effect is achieved so quickly and it is convenient to use. Nuances:

Small doses of the drug quickly stop the development of the disease; further use of the drug leads to the death of the pathogen within a week.

  1. For complete recovery, the course of treatment can last up to three weeks.
  2. To achieve a therapeutic effect, it is necessary to apply a thin layer of cream to the washed affected area two to three times a day.
  3. The ointment is poorly absorbed, so it is recommended not to get dressed immediately after applying the drug.
  4. During treatment, you should wear comfortable, breathable clothing made from natural fibers.

Candida fungi are always present in the body, but begin to multiply quickly and cause inflammation when the immune system is weakened or antibiotics are taken, so a greater treatment effect is achieved with fortifying medications and diet. The patient is prescribed fermented milk foods, dietary supplements, and a diet excluding sweet, hot, spicy and fried foods is recommended.

Operating principles

The skin may react to a local antimycotic with the following manifestations:

  • burning, itching, tingling;
  • irritation, blistering rashes;
  • swelling, redness.

If the above symptoms do not stop during treatment with antimycotic cream, but only increase, you should consult a doctor and change the drug. But if such manifestations appear and gradually fade away, treatment is not suspended.

Clotrimazole is a substance from the group of imidazole derivatives. It acts as a poison on fungal organisms, disrupting their vital processes. Clotrimazole inhibits the synthesis of ergosterol, a structural component of fungal cells, which leads to their gradual destruction.

Since the ointment is poorly absorbed, the substance accumulates in the upper layers of the skin, which entails an increase in the destructive effect on pathogenic fungal organisms.

In sufficiently high doses, the drug also has an additional toxic effect on fungal cells, increasing the concentration of hydrogen peroxide in them and accelerating the process of their destruction.

The drug is active against the following pathogenic fungi:

  • dermatophytes;
  • yeast fungi;
  • mold fungi;
  • pathogens of pityriasis versicolor and erythrasma.

It has a weak antimicrobial effect against some gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.

Clotrimazole ointment is absorbed into the skin and mucous membranes. The substance is concentrated in the epidermis and in the keratin of the nails, hardly penetrating into the lower layers of the skin and practically not entering the bloodstream.

The simultaneous use of the drug with Amphotericin B, Nystatin, Nitamycin is unacceptable, because they reduce the effectiveness of Clotrimazole.

Features of Clotrimazole solution

The anti-fungal solution contains 1% clotrimazole - 10 mg of active substance per 1 ml. The base of the drug is 96% ethyl alcohol and isopropyl myristate (helps to evenly distribute the composition over the surface).

The liquid preparation is packaged in bottles with a dropper or spray with a capacity of 15, 20, 30 ml, and then in cardboard boxes with attached instructions for use. The solution is clear or slightly yellowish, with a specific alcoholic odor.

Indications for use of the drug

Use 1% clotrimazole solution in the following cases:

  • fungal infections of the mucous membranes and epidermis caused by various pathogens (fungal stomatitis, various candidiasis, dermatophytosis, microsporia, etc.),
  • pityriasis versicolor and versicolor versicolor, erythrasma,
  • mycotic lesions complicated by bacterial infection and suppuration (pyoderma),
  • periungual felons,
  • complex treatment of onychomycosis,
  • preventive treatment of the birth canal.

Contraindications and warnings

The drug is prohibited if you are allergic to clotrimazole or other substances from the imidazole group. Another possible obstacle is related to the presence of ethyl alcohol in the solution. It, unlike the active substance, is easily absorbed through the mucous membranes and skin. This is not advisable for pregnant women and children under 12 years of age. In addition, alcohol often causes burning and dry skin.

No studies have been conducted on the safety of Clotrimazole in the first trimester of pregnancy, so it is not indicated for use during this period. It is unknown whether clotrimazole passes into breast milk, so use during lactation should also be avoided. In the second and third trimester of pregnancy, use is permitted only as prescribed by a doctor.

The drug in the form of an alcohol solution is intended exclusively for topical use and cannot be taken orally.

It is important to avoid getting the composition into the eyes - this will cause a chemical burn to the mucous membrane. For the same reason, the solution is not applied to damaged skin (wounds, scratches, severe scratching)

In this case, alcohol will cause a strong burning sensation.

Side effects

Possible negative reactions of the body to the drug include:

  • tingling and burning at the site of application of the solution,
  • skin redness,
  • rash like urticaria,
  • blisters with clear fluid,
  • edema,
  • irritation, peeling and dryness of the dermis (associated with the presence of alcohol).

In case of allergic manifestations, the clotrimazole solution is replaced with agents from other pharmacological groups. In case of minor short-term irritation, discontinuation of the drug is not required.

Trade names

Clotrimazole 1% drops can be purchased at any pharmacy. There are other trade names for this drug:

  • Clotrimazole Akrikhin. Manufacturer: Medana Pharma (Poland) commissioned by the Russian company Akrikhin. 15 ml bottle with dropper. Approximate price 200 rubles,
  • Candide. Manufacturer: Glenmark (India). Bottle with dropper 20 and 30 ml. Average cost 350-450 rubles,
  • Candida for the oral cavity. Bottle 15 ml. A solution with the addition of glycerol and propylene glycol. Approximate price 300 rubles,
  • Kanizon. Manufacturer: Agio Pharmaceuticals (India). Bottle with a capacity of 20 ml. Costs about 120 rubles.

Important! Clotrimazole solution in the form of a spray is produced by the German companies Bayer and Ratiopharm (Kanesten and Kandibene), but they are currently not sold in Russia

Description of the drug

Clotrimazole is an ointment (cream) for external use with a pronounced antifungal effect. The base for liniment is medical petroleum jelly, which ensures a prolonged effect of the medicine. The healing agent, and also the main active ingredient, is clotrimazole, an imidazole derivative.

The synthesized antimycotic drug is used in the etiotropic treatment of infections of fungal etiology. The medication has a wide spectrum of action, and therefore must be in the home medicine cabinet.

The action of liniment is aimed at:

  • suppression of the activity of bacteria and fungi;
  • complete destruction of pathogenic microflora;
  • resistance does not develop to the components of the drug, even with prolonged use.

Only a few strains of Candida are known that are inert to Clotrimazole.

Pharmacological group and action

Clotrimazole ointment is a non-hormonal drug belonging to the antifungal clinical and pharmacological group. The medication is used externally only. The antimycotic effect is aimed at preventing the intensive growth and spread of fungal cells, suppressing vital processes.

Clotrimazole affects the membrane structure of the cell, increasing its permeability. The mechanism of action on pathogenic microflora:

  • changes in biochemical processes associated with the synthesis of ergosterol (a substance that is one of the key components of the cell membrane);
  • adjustment of the level of permeability of cell membranes;
  • destruction of the internal contents of the microorganism, followed by its death.

The final effect is determined by the dosage of the main component: a small concentration of clotrimazole prevents the development and spread of the fungus, and high doses of the same element destroy the fungal structure at the cellular level (fungicidal effect). The active substance affects the mitochondria of the fungus, disrupts the sequence of metabolic reactions, which leads to the saturation of cells with hydrogen peroxide. As a result, the cell dies very quickly.

Clotrimazole is characterized by mild antibacterial activity directed against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria.

Release form and composition

Today, the drug is produced by several companies located both in Russia and abroad. The medicine is available in several dosage forms:

  • ointment (1%) – in aluminum tubes of 15, 20, 25, 30 and 40 g, supplied in cardboard boxes;
  • gel (1%) – in aluminum tubes of 20 and 40 g, each of which is in a cardboard package with instructions for use;
  • clotrimazole cream (1%) - in aluminum tubes of 15, 20, 30 and 50 g in cardboard packs indicating the date of production, composition and recommendations for application.

Vaginal suppositories and clotrimazole tablets are available for women, but we will devote a separate article to them, but today I would like to dwell in more detail on external use. Obviously, the listed dosage forms differ not only in packaging, but also in components.

Composition of drugs based on clotrimazole:

  1. Ointment: 1 g of liniment contains 10 mg of clotrimazole. Auxiliary ingredients include: nipagin, methylaparaben, propylene glycol, and polyethylene oxides.
  2. Gel: the concentration of the active substance is similar to that of the ointment composition. Additional components are presented: ethyl alcohol 96%, carbomer, macrogol 400, sage extract, glycerol and propylene glycol.
  3. Cream: the main element is presented in the same concentration, but the auxiliary ingredients are different: purified water, octyldodecanol, polysorbate 60, cetostearyl alcohol, sorbitan stearate.

Some pharmaceutical companies produce the medicine in granular and powder form, but these are practically unavailable in pharmacies.

Pharmacological effect

Clotrimazole is a drug with pronounced antifungal properties, which belongs to the imidazole derivative. The use of the drug makes it possible to inhibit the synthesis of ergosterol, thereby disrupting the permeability of fungal cells, causing their death. Clotrimazole - the active component of the ointment is effective against dermatophytes, yeast, mold fungi, and has an antibacterial effect against staphylococcal and streptococcal infections. This drug can be used for various fungal diseases.

After application to the skin, the active component is quickly absorbed into the upper and deep layers of the epidermis and practically does not penetrate into the bloodstream. A special feature of the drug is the fact that after use the therapeutic effect will not be noticeable immediately, but after a while. However, with long-term use, the effect of the drug will be 100%

It is very important to maintain skin hygiene when using the ointment, and also not to skip its application.

This ointment not only allows you to get rid of a fungal infection, but also significantly reduces infection of the skin with other bacteria, which often complicate the treatment process and the course of the disease.

The effectiveness of Clotrimazole in the fight against thrush

Clotrimazole ointment is a universal drug for external use, which is often used to treat thrush in women, men and even children.

Despite the simplicity of the composition, the product is quite effective not only in the treatment of thrush, but also in the treatment of other diseases caused by pathogenic microorganisms, such as staphylococcus, streptococcus.

The ointment allows you to get rid of negative symptoms, such as:

white coating on the vaginal mucosa;

  • itching;
  • swelling;
  • hyperemia;
  • pain and discomfort.

Despite the fact that the drug allows you to completely cure thrush, you should not expect a quick effect from the therapy. By combining different forms of Clotrimazole, complete recovery can be accelerated.

The effectiveness of the drug is caused by ergosterol, a substance included in the ointment. It is this component that leads to the elimination of pathogenic fungi due to the fact that it promotes the loss of nutrients and leads to paralysis of the vital activity of bacteria. The effect of the drug extends to such types of mushrooms that reproduce by division.

By taking the drug in a minimal dosage or not regularly, the patient deprives himself of the opportunity to be cured, thereby simply blocking the spread of fungi. Absolute recovery can only be achieved with complex treatment, following the dosage and doctor’s recommendations.

Clotrimazole ointment for women

Thrush or candidal vulvitis in women is accompanied by symptoms:

  • itching, burning and swelling of the genitals;
  • mucous discharge is yellowish or white, sometimes there is copious liquid discharge or curdled flakes;
  • unpleasant smell.

Clotrimazole for women is used in the treatment of thrush. The use of ointment for the treatment of candidiasis has received positive reviews - it immediately eliminates unpleasant itching and burning. The ointment comes on sale with a nozzle convenient for douching. The cream is administered once a day for three days. For chronic disease, it is recommended to use the cream three times a day for two weeks.

A prerequisite for recovery is adherence to the rules of personal intimate hygiene, wearing cotton underwear, exclusion of sexual activity during treatment and simultaneous treatment of the sexual partner. The drug can be prescribed without the presence of characteristic signs of the disease for the sanitation of the birth canal for women in the last trimester of pregnancy.

How to use Clotrimazole

An important rule in the treatment of gynecological diseases is adherence to the schedule. Clotrimazole can be used in gynecology intravaginally, i.e. inside the vagina, and both suppositories and vaginal tablets are suitable for this. The standard regimen, which is prescribed by a specialist, assumes that for three days it will be necessary to administer one tablet twice a day. If the treatment regimen provides for a weekly interval, then one tablet per day is enough. It is recommended to administer it at night because the undissolved part of the medicine may be released.

Instructions for use of Clotrimazole ointment

An antifungal drug in the form of an ointment is intended for external and vaginal use. The aluminum tube with the medication has an outer packaging - a cardboard box. The drug comes with instructions for using Clotrimazole. You can buy this medicine at a pharmacy without a doctor's prescription; it can be stored for two years in a dry place without sunlight.

When Clotrimazole ointment is prescribed, the instructions for use inform the consumer that the ointment must be applied in small portions (dosage is 5 millimeters) onto a clean, dry surface and rubbed in with light circular movements. The duration and frequency of use of the cream is strictly individual for each person, the type of lesion, and is determined when the drug is prescribed by a doctor. According to the annotation, the ointment can be applied to areas of inflammation:

  • skin of the whole body;
  • mucous membranes of the oral cavity, genital organs (excludes the mucous membrane of the eyes).

Composition of Clotrimazole ointment

The drug is made on the basis of petroleum jelly (paraffin). Clotrimazole contains excipients:

  • propylene glycol;
  • polyethylene oxide;
  • methyl parahydroxybenzoate or methylparaben (nipagin).

The active substance of the drug comes from the imidazole group. The mechanism of the therapeutic effect of the substance is based on the fact that it disrupts the synthesis of ergosterol in fungal cells. This leads to disruption of the structure and damage to cell membranes. Additionally, the substance interacts with fungal enzymes, promotes the formation and accumulation of hydrogen peroxide in cells, which destroys cells.

Indications for use of Clotrimazole ointment

The properties of the drug to have a destructive effect on pathogens of fungal and infectious diseases are used to treat various diseases. It suppresses the action of pathogens:

  • mycoses (yeast, mold, dermatophytes);
  • coccal infections (streptococci, staphylococci);
  • trichomonas infections.

According to the instructions, there are indications for the use of Clotrimazole:

  • candidal balanitis and vulvitis;
  • stomatitis;
  • trichophytosis (ringworm);
  • paronychia (inflammation of the periungual fold);
  • trichomoniasis;
  • pityriasis (pityriasis rosea);
  • psoriasis;
  • erythema;
  • erythrasma (bacterial infection of the skin in folds);
  • inflamed hemorrhoids.

The average price for a pack of tablets is 30 rubles. Products for external use are sold in pharmacies at prices ranging from 50 to 220 rubles. The most expensive is the cream. The price of the solution is approximately 230 rubles.

Analogues of Clotrimazole:

  1. Kanizon cream for external use with an identical active substance.
  2. Mycozon. The composition includes the substance miconazole with a dosage of 2%. Used to treat ringworm.
  3. Kanesten. The active ingredient is identical. Prescribed for the treatment of lichen and other fungal diseases.

For this category of patients, topical creams, ointments and systemic antifungal drugs are used.

Reviews

Oksana, Voronezh: After the appearance of cheesy discharge, I immediately made an appointment with a gynecologist. The doctor said that girls can use not only Clotrimazole ointment, but also tablets for thrush. I used this combination for a week, after which I took a smear for testing. The results showed that I am completely healthy.

Zoya, Abakan: I treated myself with herbs for chronic thrush. There was constant pain in the lower abdomen, pain and unbearable itching. The gynecologist prescribed Clotrimazole, Fluconazole and Gynocomfort ointment for intimate hygiene. On the first day of treatment, almost all discomfort disappeared.

Interaction with other drugs

An antifungal drug with the same active substance can inhibit the action of other drugs. In the vast majority of cases, this refers to medications for external use, while Clotrimazole in tablets belongs to a different category of drugs. If a doctor has prescribed this broad-spectrum antifungal agent to fight an infection, then, as a specialist, he knows that vaginal tablets with this active ingredient cannot be combined with Nystatin, Natamycin or other polyene antibiotics.

There is also the opposite phenomenon, when taking certain medications can greatly affect the effectiveness of Clotrimazole. Interaction with other drugs in such cases is undesirable, since the recovery process will take time; among such drugs is Dexamethasone. If there is a need to enhance the antimycotic properties of clotrimazole, then adding p-hydroxybenzoic acid propyl ester to the treatment regimen will help achieve the desired result, and the latter must be taken in high concentration.

Therapeutic effect

According to the classification, it belongs to antimycotics. The mechanism of action is due to the influence of the chemical compound on the membrane of fungal cells. Depending on the dose used, the substance can disrupt the division of pathogens or destroy fungal microorganisms. The drug can disrupt the formation of proteins, carbohydrates, nucleic acids and other important cellular components of infectious agents. Wide spectrum of antimycotic and antimicrobial action.

Action

The spectrum of antimicrobial and antifungal action depends on the dosage used.

Clotrimazole ointment contraindications

To prevent negative reactions early in pregnancy, avoid the drug in any form. Start therapy no earlier than the 12th week of pregnancy. During lactation, use the ointment carefully. The most favorable form of remedy during the treatment of thrush is considered to be a cream or ointment.

We note that it is strictly forbidden to use the ointment while breastfeeding if a woman is treating the mammary glands with the drug. The components of the ointment enter the child’s body, causing poisoning in the baby and intoxication.

There are also contraindications

Also, doctors do not allow the use of ointment in the following cases:

  • If a woman has kidney or liver disease.
  • During the menstrual cycle. This is because the ointment can enter the body with the blood, thereby causing side effects.
  • For candidiasis of the eye mucosa. Irreversible changes may develop, even causing vision loss.

Using medication for thrush

Clotrimazole has an antifungal effect and is suitable for external and topical use. Most often, Clotrimazole is prescribed to infants to eliminate candidiasis of the skin and oral cavity.

To treat thrush in the mouth, a 1% solution is used, which is intended for topical use. The main form of its production is polyethylene bottles with built-in dropper stoppers. To eliminate thrush, 10-20 drops of this solution are applied to the inflamed areas of the mouth using a cotton swab. This procedure should be carried out several times a day and after 3-5 days it is possible to get rid of the cheesy coating on the inner surface of the cheeks and lips. Despite the improvement in the patient’s condition, treatment must continue for several more days.

Despite the high effectiveness of this drug in the treatment of various diseases, in some cases its use can cause the development of side effects:

  • staining the oral mucosa red;
  • a burning sensation in the mouth;
  • severe swelling of the mucous membrane;
  • a tingling sensation at the site of application;
  • development of urticaria.

If such symptoms occur in a child, it is necessary to stop using Clotrimazole and show it to a specialist to determine further treatment tactics. An allergic reaction to any component of the drug may be a contraindication to the treatment of various diseases in childhood.

Side effects

The use of Clotrimazole as vaginal tablets may cause side effects:

  • headache,
  • burning, itching and swelling in the vaginal mucosa,
  • discharge,
  • gastralgia,
  • cystitis,
  • frequent urination,
  • pain during intercourse,
  • burning sensation in the partner's penis.

Attention!

  1. To prevent recurrence of a urogenital infection, it is necessary for both sexual partners to undergo treatment.
  2. Until partners complete treatment, sexual intercourse is undesirable, as it can cause re-infection.
  3. Do not use the applicator during pregnancy.
  4. Patients with liver failure require periodic monitoring of liver condition.
  5. If there is no effect of treatment within a month, then confirmation of the diagnosis is necessary.

Interaction with other drugs

  1. Vaginal administration of suppositories reduces the effectiveness of amphotericin B and other polyene antibiotics.
  2. Concurrent use of nystatin weakens the effect of Clotrimazole.
  3. It is allowed to combine treatment with suppositories and taking vitamin and herbal supplements.

Indications for use

The scope of application depends on the dosage form. Mainly used to eliminate fungal pathologies that damage integumentary tissues and mucous membranes, including infection of the external genitalia and skin. Not used to treat diseases of internal organs.

Only a specialist can assess the advisability of prescribing the drug. Self-medication is prohibited.

Indications for use of gel, ointment, solution and cream

  • Fungal pathology of integumentary tissues, including the skin of the extremities and torso.
  • Infection of the external auditory canal.
  • Bacterial pseudomycosis of skin folds.
  • Fungal infection of the external genitalia (Candida).
  • Pityriasis versicolor.

Indications for the use of vaginal suppositories and tablets

  • Fungal infection of the vaginal mucosa (Candida).
  • Antifungal treatment of the birth canal.
  • Infection of the reproductive system (Candida).

Used to eliminate drug-sensitive pathogens, including nystatin-resistant Candida strains.

Indications

First of all, of course, thrush.

It is important that Clotrimazole suppositories help resist a large number of types of fungi. Their action is based on the destruction of cells in pathogenic microflora

In particular, the objects of influence of the drug are:

  • yeasts (including candida),
  • molds,
  • dermatophytes,
  • microorganisms that contribute to the appearance of pityriasis versicolor and erythrasma,
  • Trichomonas,
  • streptococci,
  • staphylococci, etc.

The antimycotic effect of clotrimazole as an active substance is to disrupt the synthesis of ergosterol, a constituent element of the fungal cell membrane. This leads to a change in membrane permeability and subsequent cell dissolution.

In small concentrations, the drug substance inhibits and stops the growth of fungi. And in large doses it contributes to their death.

After administration of the drug, its high concentration in the vaginal secretion and low concentration in the blood remain for 48 to 72 hours. Metabolism in the liver to inactive metabolites occurs quickly.

Presence of contraindications

Clotrimazole, despite its effectiveness, has a number of contraindications, so it is better to stop using the medicine immediately than to regret it later. Their main types include increased sensitivity of the body to the composition of the drug. This phenomenon appears immediately after using the first tablet, which contributes to the development of side symptoms in the form of allergic manifestations.

Women during pregnancy, during breastfeeding, as well as girls who are not sexually active at all should be treated with vaginal remedies for candidiasis with caution. In all other cases, the drug can be used to effectively treat thrush.

Use of medicine in pediatric practice

Clotrimazole is used in an infant after a fungal infection has occurred at the site of diaper rash. The medicine quickly heals rashes, reduces inflammation and redness on the skin. Clotrimazole for newborns is prescribed for the treatment of vulvovaginitis caused by candida fungus. Vaginitis of fungal etiology is also treated in children under 12 months of age.

For newborns, Clotrimazole ointment is prescribed for fungus in the groin area (thighs, perineum). The disease can appear due to improper care and infrequent bathing of the child. The drug removes foci of fungal infection well.

A child under 12 months of age has very sweaty feet due to the fact that thermoregulation and sweat glands are not yet fully formed. In children, the likelihood of developing fungus in this case is very high. When a fungal infection appears, the skin of the child’s feet begins to peel, turn red and itch very much. To relieve this condition, clotrimazole ointment or cream is used.

Infants can use Clotrimazole for ringworm. The drug eliminates flaking, as well as inflammation, formations on the scalp. The medicine helps quite quickly.

Measures in case of overdose

The likelihood of an overdose is almost eliminated, since suppositories are applied topically. The active substances enter the circulatory system in minimal quantities, so even with prolonged use of suppositories it is impossible to poison the body with them. But this does not mean that it is permissible to exceed the recommended dosage or use suppositories for other purposes.

In practice, Clotrimazole poisoning occurs only in children if they accidentally find clotrimazole suppositories and swallow them. To prevent this, you need to keep the packaging where neither children nor animals can reach it.

Symptoms of poisoning:

  • loss of appetite;
  • nausea, vomiting;
  • stomach ache;
  • weakness.

In such a situation, you should immediately call a doctor. As an emergency measure, gastric lavage is recommended. You can also give the victim enterosorbents. Even if the child’s condition quickly improves, he must be shown to a specialist.

The cost of Clotrimazole in pharmacies starts from 12 rubles, the average price of a package is 119 rubles, the maximum is about 300 rubles.

Features of application

If a woman is pregnant, she should use any medications very carefully. Therapy with Clotrimazole can begin in the second trimester, since this drug is contraindicated in the first trimester

If the doctor gives a prescription, she can begin therapy. It is worth noting that throughout the entire medication course the patient will be under the supervision of specialists.

Patients prescribed suppositories should follow the following recommendations:

  1. To prevent secondary infection and the development of urogenital infection, both sexual partners should undergo drug therapy.
  2. If trichomoniasis is being treated, other medications should be used in parallel with vaginal suppositories. For example, for this category of patients the use of topical medications, such as Metronidazole tablets, is indicated.
  3. In the case when treatment is carried out for an infectious lesion of the labia, as well as adjacent areas of the skin and mucous membranes, patients are prescribed local medications for external treatment. For example, an ointment or solution containing the active substance Clotrimazole.
  4. If drug therapy is carried out during gestation, then vaginal tablets should be administered without an applicator.
  5. When treating patients with liver failure, it is necessary to regularly monitor the condition of this organ using laboratory diagnostics.
  6. If, while using vaginal suppositories or other dosage forms, patients develop signs of hypersensitivity, then therapy should be discontinued.
  7. In the event that patients do not experience positive dynamics during a four-week course, tests should be taken to confirm the primary diagnosis.
  8. After completing drug therapy, patients can take a second course only after consultation with specialists.
  9. This drug is used in gynecology for sanitation of the birth canal. In this case, it will be enough to administer one suppository.

Clotrimazole analogs

For local treatment of fungal diseases of the nail plate, agents from the allylamine group - Terbinafine and Naftifine in the form of creams - are widely used. Drugs from the azole group are also popular - Fluconazole and Itraconazole, available in the form of ointments and creams. Just like Clotrimazole, they have a detrimental effect on pathogenic microorganisms.

To combat oral candidiasis, polyene antibiotics are used - Nystatin, Levorin and Amphoglucamine. Fluconazole is also widely used. These drugs have a systemic effect and are available in the form of tablets that must be chewed and kept in the mouth for a long time to obtain the effect.

Now you know how to use clotrimazole solution against fungus of nails, skin and mucous membranes.

Advantages and disadvantages of using suppositories for thrush

Advantages of using topical medications for candidiasis in women:

  • When the drug is administered to a place where fungi actively multiply, the effect of local treatment appears much faster, especially when using modern effective drugs such as Livarol or Zalain.
  • Modern antifungal agents can be used once.
  • Because systemic absorption of topical medications is low, the incidence of side effects is reduced, unlike oral therapy.

Disadvantages of local treatment:

  • Local treatment causes some inconvenience to a woman - it stains her underwear and limits her sex life.
  • A positive effect from such therapy is possible only in mild forms of thrush, but when the course of the disease is more severe and prolonged, local therapy should be supplemented with the use of antifungal drugs in tablets. Therefore, it is often necessary to repeat the course of treatment after a certain time.
  • When using combined antimicrobial drugs, such as Terzhinan, Polygynax, a common side effect is vaginal dysbiosis, which then requires additional treatment, for example, the use of suppositories with lactobacilli - Lactonorma, Acylact, Lactobacterin, Ecofemin or Vagiflora.

Principles of treatment of onychomycosis

If you seek professional help in a timely manner, you can get rid of nail fungus using topical products. If the pathology is in an advanced stage, you cannot do without taking systemic antifungal medications. As part of complex therapy, you can use the antimycotic solution of clotrimazole (or its analogues) and the drug in tablets. The duration of treatment will depend on the stage of the disease.

Antifungal medications in liquid form (sprays, solutions) create a high concentration of the active substance on the nail plate, which is impossible to achieve with systemic medications. Moreover, such a drug is not absorbed into the bloodstream and cannot cause side effects.

It is necessary to remove the nail plate for better penetration of the drug only if it is severely deformed and thickened. During therapy, you should visit your doctor every two weeks for a follow-up examination and adjustment of the treatment regimen.

What you need to know before using clotrimazole tablets

Before starting treatment for thrush with vaginal tablets containing clotrimazole, consider the following information:

  • Clotrimazole pessaries may damage the latex used to make condoms and diaphragms for contraception, thereby interfering with their effectiveness in preventing pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. You should use an alternative method of contraception for at least 5 days after using this drug, or better yet, avoid sex until you are completely healed. Remember that having sex while you have a yeast infection can pass the yeast infection on to your partner, who can later infect you again.
  • If your sexual partner also has symptoms of thrush, they should be treated at the same time as you. This can be done using a cream or ointment containing clotrimazole.

Rules of application

With the development of vaginal candidiasis, patients are recommended to use Clotrimazole suppositories. This medicine can quite quickly eliminate the unpleasant symptoms that accompany thrush. Experts warn that this form of medication should be used in full accordance with the instructions and medical prescriptions. It is worth noting that the parallel consumption of alcoholic beverages, as well as certain medications, significantly reduces the effectiveness of therapy.

Candles should be used as follows:

  1. The standard regimen of drug therapy for thrush involves the use of suppositories for 6 days. Patients should insert one suppository into the vagina every day.
  2. At the same time, female patients can take dietary supplements.
  3. Before inserting a suppository, a woman should sanitize her vagina. In this case, she will be able to enhance the therapeutic effect of the medication.
  4. If positive dynamics are observed within 6 days, but they are weakly expressed, then the specialist can extend the course of therapy.
  5. Suppositories should be placed at night, since in this case the medicinal mass melted under the influence of high temperature will remain in the vagina.
  6. Experts strongly recommend that patients refrain from sexual intercourse, even with condoms, during treatment. This is due to the fact that during intimacy they may experience unpleasant sensations, pain and discomfort.
  7. If a woman starts using the drug, she must complete the prescribed course of therapy. Due to the fact that a few days after starting to use suppositories, the unpleasant symptoms of thrush become less pronounced, many patients give up treatment, believing that they have successfully overcome their illness. This opinion is erroneous, since with the help of the drug they were able to stop the proliferation of pathogenic microflora in such a short period of time. After the effect of the drug wears off, the fungal infection will either re-emerge or become chronic.
  8. The maximum course of drug therapy cannot last more than 30 days. If during this time the patient does not experience any positive changes, then her doctor will refer her for examination. After receiving the test results, the specialist will adjust the medication regimen and possibly prescribe other medications.
  9. It is prohibited to take medications from the nystatin group in parallel with suppositories. This ban is due to the fact that the active substance of suppositories neutralizes the effect of these drugs.
  10. Clotrimazole suppositories can be used in parallel with vitamin therapy.
  11. To prevent the development of various complications, every woman should use the drug only as prescribed.

Effect on fertility, use during pregnancy and breastfeeding

No special studies have been conducted on the effect of clotrimazole on the ability of women to conceive a child. Scientific evidence obtained through animal experiments has shown that this drug does not have any effect on fertility.

There is also limited scientific evidence on the use of clotrimazole in pregnant women. Animal studies have demonstrated that this drug may have negative effects in very high doses. Since a very small amount of clotrimazole enters the systemic circulation when administered intravaginally, this negative effect on the reproductive system and fetus is not observed. Therefore, vaginal tablets with clotrimazole can be used during pregnancy, but only as prescribed by doctors. It should be borne in mind that in the first trimester it is better to refrain from using any antifungal agents.

Existing pharmacological data indicate that clotrimazole, once in the bloodstream, can also pass into breast milk. Thus, the risk of it entering the baby’s body during breastfeeding cannot be excluded. Therefore, it is best to stop breastfeeding during treatment. To preserve breast milk, you need to express it at this time.

Vaginal suppositories Clotrimazole

This medical drug is actively used in modern gynecology, has antifungal properties, and is suitable mainly for external use. Clotrimazole vaginal suppositories have a wide spectrum of action, according to the instructions for use, but should be prescribed exclusively by the attending physician after a gynecological examination and taking a smear for further examination of the vaginal microflora.

Release form

Clotrimazole has several forms of release, but women are well familiar with vaginal suppositories of an oblong shape, white color, which have a specific smell and dense consistency. A typical medicine has a lot of taxes, but its high effectiveness does not raise the slightest doubt among certified doctors and patients. The therapeutic effect is achieved due to the chemical composition of Clotrimazole suppositories, the destruction of the membranes of pathogenic cells.

Compound

The active component of the suppositories, Clotrimazole, is a synthetic substance of the same name, which has antifungal properties. When administered vaginally, the suppository causes spontaneous destruction of the membranes of fungi of the genus Candida, reduces the increased activity of other pathogenic pathogens. The influence of the yeast-like fungus is reduced, and after completing the course the woman finally gets rid of pain, burning, and discomfort in the vaginal area. Excipients: lactose, microcrystalline cellulose, potato starch, citric acid, magnesium stearate.

Indications for use

The main direction in which Clotrimazole suppositories successfully work is the extermination of genital infections caused by increased activity of the yeast-like fungus of the genus Candida. Alternatively, it could be vaginal vulvovaginitis, which is more simply called “thrush”. In addition, clotrimazole suppositories are recommended for use in other infections that are sensitive to the influence of clotrimazole. More detailed information about the indications of these vaginal suppositories is provided in the instructions.

Clotrimazole suppositories demonstrate increased activity against the following pathogenic microorganisms: streptococci, staphylococci, molds, dermatophytes, trichomonas. In the latter case, we are talking about the unpleasant disease trichomoniasis, which is difficult to diagnose and even more difficult to successfully and quickly cure. So you need to act as soon as the first symptoms appear.

Clotrimazole tablets during pregnancy

The instructions for the drug recommend using Clotrimazole with caution during pregnancy. But in some cases, doctors still prescribe pills to pregnant women, if this is due to the woman’s condition.

Scheme for using Clotrimazole during pregnancy:

  • You cannot use the tablets in the first three months of bearing a child, because this can affect the development of the baby and even lead to the death of the fetus.
  • From the second trimester, the doctor can decide on the treatment of thrush in a pregnant woman on an individual basis. The course of treatment depends on the condition of the expectant mother and the development of the disease.
  • Typically, in the second and third trimester, the course of treatment is 100 mg per day, every other day. This course lasts no more than 10 days and is the most gentle form of treatment for thrush in pregnant women.

After childbirth, during lactation, Clotrimazole tablets are also prescribed with caution and under the supervision of the attending physician.

Clotrimazole is a drug that should be used with caution during pregnancy due to the risk of side effects for mother and baby

Price for Clotrimazole gel

The price of the drug is relatively low, its variation depends on the country of manufacture and the weight of the drug in the tube:

Name Form Manufacturer Weight Price, rubles
Clotrimazole Gel 1% Russia 20 g 37-55
Poland 20 g 64-130

Suppositories for thrush during pregnancy

Very often, thrush occurs in women during pregnancy due to a physiological decrease in immunity, and many drugs either categorically cannot be used, or reliable studies of safety for the fetus have not been carried out. Among the entire selection of local drugs, the following suppositories for thrush during pregnancy are approved for use:

Suppositories - Pimafucin, Primafungin (active ingredient Natamycin). Combined drug - Macmiror complex (active ingredients Nystatin and Nifuratel).

In the 2-3 trimesters Clotrimazole, Nystatin (low effectiveness) or the ancient remedy Borax in glycerin (Sodium tetraborate in glycerin), Pimafucin, Gino-Pevaril, Ginofort (vaginal cream), all these drugs are used during pregnancy with caution if there is a potential risk for the health of the mother exceeds the risk for the child.

Some doctors prescribe a combination drug - Terzhinan (prednisolone, neomycin, ternidazole, nystatin), but the instructions for it indicate that from the 2nd trimester it can only be used when assessing the potential benefit to the mother and harm to the fetus, since it has undesirable side effects and contains a hormonal drug - prednisolone.

How to use Clotrimazole tablets

Clotrimazole tablets are intended for intravaginal use, i.e. they need to be inserted into the vagina.

Instructions for use of Clotrimazole tablets:

  1. Carefully read the annotation for the drug, which describes the daily dosage and permissible course duration. The standard treatment regimen is a vaginal tablet (100 mg) at night for 6 days.
  2. Before administering the tablet, you should thoroughly wash your hands and wash your external organs.
  3. You should take a position that is comfortable for administering the tablet: lying on your back, slightly bend your knees.
  4. Insert the tablet carefully, with light pressure.
  5. It is recommended to lie in the same position for some time so that the drug can be evenly distributed.
  6. You should not change the dosage and duration of treatment with the drug yourself. In some cases, the doctor may change the treatment regimen and prescribe the drug to be administered twice a day (evening and morning), in which case the course is reduced from 6 to 3 days.
  7. Before childbirth and surgical operations on the genital organs, the drug is administered once.
  8. Clotrimazole tablets are approved for use by adolescents over 12 years of age, but such drugs are not prescribed to girls under 12 years of age.

Vaginal tablets dissolve inside under the influence of vaginal secretions. If a woman has dry vagina syndrome, then after some time there may be a discharge of undissolved parts of the tablets. It is for this reason that it is recommended to insert the tablets as deeply as possible.

Important! You should not use Clotrimazole tablets during menstruation, because... the active substance will be washed out of the vagina, which reduces the effectiveness of the drug. It is better to complete the course of treatment before the onset of menstruation.

When treating thrush, it is advisable not to limit yourself only to the use of Clotrimazole tablets - complex treatment of candidiasis should include the use of ointments, gels and creams simultaneously with vaginal products.

Treatment of thrush in women should be comprehensive; in addition to the use of tablets, creams and gels should also be used topically

Some women prefer Clotrimazole suppositories - they cause less discomfort and are inserted more gently into the vagina. Therefore, if a woman has hypersensitivity, a more gentle remedy should be selected for the treatment of candidiasis.

Note! To prevent possible infection, as well as for prevention, candidiasis should be treated simultaneously with a sexual partner.

Clotrimazole tablets are intended for the treatment of certain “male” diseases (for example, urethritis). But if women can insert pills into the vagina, what method of administration should men use? They are offered the following scheme for using tablets:

  • Dilute the tablet in a teaspoon of warm water.
  • Wait 2-3 minutes until the mixture becomes mushy.
  • Apply the mixture to the affected areas of the penis.
  • Apply a bandage on top and cover with a plastic bag.
  • Remove the bandage after a maximum of 2 hours.

This method is not very convenient, so it is better for men to use Clotrimazole in the form of creams or ointments.

Note! When using Clotrimazole in the form of vaginal suppositories, it is recommended to avoid condoms, because the active ingredient of the medicine can destroy latex.

You can also use Clotrimazole tablets for prophylactic purposes to prevent thrush. To do this, one tablet per week for a month is enough. However, if there are no pronounced symptoms of the disease, it is not worth using the drug even as a prophylaxis. It is better not to abuse medications, but to follow basic rules of intimate hygiene to avoid illness.

pharmachologic effect

The main pharmacological action is antimycotic, fungicidal, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory.

The active component of the drug destroys the protective membrane of the fungus, thereby preventing its reproduction, growth and development. The parasites do not spread to neighboring nails and quickly die - along with this, the main symptoms of mycoses disappear, including headaches, nausea, and problems with internal organs.

Using Clotrimazole you can quickly cure nail fungus

Effective against fungi of Candida species, yeast, mold, dermatophytes. Poorly absorbed from the skin.

It has long been known how ointment differs from cream - the latter is based on Vaseline. Therefore, the cream is much more practical to use: it does not stain clothes and is absorbed faster.

Mechanism of action of clotrimazole

Clotrimazole is a local antifungal agent that stops the growth and reproduction of fungal microorganisms and also destroys them. This drug inhibits the synthesis of ergosterol in fungal cells, which is necessary for the creation and maintenance of their cell membranes. Cell membranes are necessary for fungi to survive and reproduce; they keep unwanted substances out of their cells and prevent cellular contents from leaking out. When using clotrimazole, holes appear in the cell membranes of fungi, which kills these microorganisms.
