Instructions for use of Valocordin: features and analogues

Valocordin is a popular psycholeptic, the use of which provides a sedative, vasodilator and antispasmodic effect. Instructions for use and storage of Valocordin indicate the advisability of medication therapy if there are problems with heart rhythm, as well as those associated with cardiovascular pathologies, neuroses, stress, and insomnia.

What is Valocordin

According to the accepted medical classification, Valocordin drops belong to sedatives. Additionally, it can be used as an antispasmodic because it relaxes the smooth muscles of internal organs. The medicine has a complex composition - phenobarbital and ethyl bromizovalerianate are declared as active substances.

Composition and release form

From the instructions for use attached to each bottle you can find out the detailed composition of Valocordin drops:

Description Colorless liquid with the aroma of mint and hops, bitter taste, 1 ml contains 20 drops
Phenobarbital concentration, mg/ml 18,4
Content of ethyl bromoisovalerianate (ethyl ester of alpha-bromoisovaleric acid), mg/ml 18,4
Compound Peppermint oil, hop oil, water, ethanol
Package Dropper bottles of 20 or 50 ml

Action of Valocordin

In small doses, the active substances of the composition have a sedative and hypnotic effect, in high doses they have a narcotic effect. Phenobarbital is a derivative of barbituric acid, inhibits the inhibitory system of the reticular formation, and is capable of slightly lowering blood pressure. The substance is absorbed in the stomach, 35% of the dose is bound to blood plasma proteins, the rest is filtered in the kidneys.

Reabsorption of phenobarbital occurs at low levels of acidity, and reverse diffusion is impossible due to the alkalinity of the urine. 30% of the substance is excreted in the urine, some is oxidized in the liver. Long-term use of the drug leads to the accumulation of the substance in the plasma, liver enzymes are induced. This leads to an acceleration of the oxidation process of phenobarbital.

Ethyl bromizovalerianate has sedative and antispasmodic properties and acts like a phenobarbital synergist, that is, it ensures rapid onset of effectiveness. The substance releases boron in the body, which is slowly released from the body. Long-term use of the drug risks chronic boron intoxication. Peppermint and hop oils have reflex, vasodilating and antispasmodic effects.

Indications for use

The main purpose of using the medication is to eliminate sleep disturbances. In addition, indications for use of the drug are:

  • insomnia, cardiovascular cardialgia;
  • sinus tachycardia, neurotic conditions;
  • pain in the heart, ischemia of the heart muscle;
  • vegetative lability, increased irritability;
  • hypochondriacal syndrome;
  • early stages of arterial hypertension;
  • spasm of the muscles of the gastrointestinal tract (intestinal, biliary colic);
  • anxiety caused by psychosomatic phenomena;
  • brain disorders, neuroses accompanied by a feeling of fear.

What does Valocordin help with as a monotherapy?

If you believe the list of indications included in the instructions for use, very little can be understood. The question will be specified by specialized experts.

It is worth mentioning two groups of reasons for use.

The first is when the name itself helps, as such, as part of monotherapy (that is, without the parallel prescription of other drugs). Among them:

Panic attacks

Valocordin will help relieve the feeling of fear for no reason within a matter of minutes.

With prolonged use of the medication, phenobarbital prevents relapses of the disorder, although it does not provide an absolute guarantee.

At the same time, long-term use cannot be considered an adequate regimen. The risks are too great.

Cardialgia of neurogenic origin

Simply put, pain in the heart that does not have an organic cause and is caused by the patients’ increased sensitivity and instability of the central nervous system.

They are idiopathic in nature and can be eliminated with Valocordin and Validol. There is no point in using Nitroglycerin.

Heart rhythm disturbances

First of all, classic sinus tachycardia. If there is an intense influence of a negative factor, the drug will not help.

Therefore, in the absence of a clinically significant effect within 10-20 minutes, other measures must be taken. Most often, Valocordin does not help with this type of deviation.

Instability of the emotional sphere

As a medicine to normalize the condition and mental status. However, this is not an axiom either. It is necessary to proceed from the circumstances and reasons for such a behavioral disorder.

Insomnia

Not every one and not always. However, it’s worth a try, because Valocordin’s effectiveness reaches almost 60% when it comes to sleep disorders.

Spasms of smooth muscles of the intestines and abdominal organs

Minor. The medication gives a mild effect, but is not strictly used in this direction.

Hypertonic disease

Or a symptomatic increase in blood pressure in the initial stages, to a slight extent.

A controversial indication, it is necessary to evaluate the nature of the disorder and its severity, the tendency to sudden changes in pressure.

In these cases, a complex action takes place aimed at relieving symptoms.

As you can understand by looking at the list, there are no organic pathologies in it. These are functional abnormalities that do not require treatment as such. The cause needs to be eliminated. Valocordin can't handle this.

Indications for use

Tablet forms of the drug are used for the symptomatic treatment of conditions associated with sleep disorders.

The medication is widely used to treat conditions associated with disorders of the onset and maintenance of sleep.

The drug is prescribed for diseases:

  • neuroses of various etiologies;
  • mental disorders accompanied by sleep disorders;
  • sleep disorder associated with time zone change or work schedule;
  • asthenic syndrome;
  • allergic manifestations;
  • stressful conditions;
  • itching of the skin.

Tablets are used for complex therapy of colds and coughs. In this situation, the drug helps to calm the nervous system, thus relaxing the patient so that he recovers faster.

Main settings

Contraindications for the drug are as follows:

  • acute and chronic pathologies of the kidneys and liver;
  • Valocordin should not be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding;
  • patient age under 18 years;
  • personal intolerance to the main or auxiliary substances of the drug;
  • Quincke's edema;
  • vascular collapse.

The medicine is strictly contraindicated for people with vegetative-vascular dystonia and hypotension. It is not prescribed for other conditions characterized by low blood pressure.

Valocordin is prohibited in childhood

How long does Valocordin take to work?

Doctors note that the medication begins to act very quickly. This is due to the instant absorption of the active components from the stomach. When taken on an empty stomach, the properties of Valocordin begin to unfold within a few minutes. Similarly, adverse reactions are quickly observed in case of individual intolerance, so during treatment it is worth carefully monitoring the patient.

In the early stages of hypertension, Valocordin can be used to reduce blood pressure. It dilates blood vessels, relieves spasms, and increases the clearance between the vascular walls. For low blood pressure, the use of the medication is prohibited, as it can aggravate the patient’s condition and lead to critical symptoms if the recommended dosage is exceeded.

Valocordin during pregnancy

The drug should not be taken during pregnancy. Phenobarbital, which is contained in Valocordin, can cause delay in fetal development, and ethanol can provoke the development of birth defects, anomalies, and even serious damage to the internal organs of the embryo. During lactation (breastfeeding), the use of sedative medication is also contraindicated. Its active elements are able to penetrate into breast milk, and with it enter the newborn’s body. As a result, severe poisoning and depression of the central nervous system (CNS) develops.

Overdose

Symptoms of acute barbiturate overdose are dizziness, fatigue, deep sleep (difficult to wake the patient), facial swelling, rash, itching. Severe poisoning is manifested by tissue hypoxia, coma, rapid heartbeat, and arrhythmia. Vascular collapse may occur and reflexes may be lost. If left untreated, pulmonary edema or respiratory paralysis develops, leading to death. Long-term use of Valocordin leads to bromine poisoning, manifested by confusion, ataxia, apathy, depression, colds and acne.

Treatment of overdose consists of stabilizing and normalizing breathing and blood circulation in a hospital setting. The patient is given artificial respiration, shock is eliminated by introducing plasma substitutes. Activated carbon and sodium sulfate are used for gastric lavage. You can perform forced diuresis, hemodialysis, hemoperfusion. A solution of table salt with saluretic agents accelerates the removal of bromine. For hypersensitivity reactions, antihistamines are indicated.

Interaction with other drugs

The average price of VALOCORDIN in pharmacies (Moscow) is 126 rubles.

When combined with sedative drugs, as well as ethanol, the effects are enhanced. Accelerates metabolism and weakens the effect of coumarin derivatives, corticosteroids, griseofulvin, and oral contraceptive drugs. Increases the toxicity of drugs containing methotrexate.

Valocordin is approved for use as an over-the-counter drug. The approximate cost is 110 rubles. It is recommended to check the exact price at a pharmacy or online store. The drops should be stored in places protected from children, at a temperature no higher than 23 - 25 degrees.

Composition and effect of the drug Valocordin

This medicine was created in the middle of the last century in Germany. Its unique effect is based on the fact that it organically combines strong sedatives that have been used in medicine for many centuries.

1. Phenobarbital is an effective sleeping pill. Used as an anticonvulsant and relaxant. It dilates blood vessels well, so it can be used for high blood pressure, spasms and fear. In many countries, phenobarbital is considered a narcotic and is prohibited for use. But a small amount of it in the composition of the drug "Valocordin" produces only a positive effect.

2. Isovaleric acid ethyl ester is obtained from a medicinal plant, therefore it retains all its beneficial properties. Like valerian, this substance has a calming, hypnotic and antispasmodic effect. It is these two components that determine the effect that the medication “Valocordin” has. Indications for use are aimed mainly at the treatment of heart failure.

3. This drug also contains mint and hop oils, which have a sedative, vasodilator and antispasmodic effect. The combination of all these components creates the complex sedative effect that Valocordin has.

Indications for taking the medicine

Indications for the use of Valocordin are the following conditions:

  • pain in the heart arising from nervousness;

  • neuroses, accompanied by mental lability and increased irritability;
  • psychosomatic anxiety, inability to remain in a state of calm;
  • feeling of fear;
  • disturbance of falling asleep and night sleep;
  • excitement with a pronounced vegetative component (tachycardia, inadequate sweating);
  • intestinal spasms.

Instructions for use

The drug can enhance the effect of other sedatives, as well as weaken the effect of central nervous system stimulants, as indicated in the instructions for use for the drug "Valocordin" (drops). Reviews from doctors also note that phenobarbital, which is the active substance of the drug, weakens the effect of oral contraceptives, as well as glucocorticosteroids.

It is recommended to take Valocordin before meals, diluting it with a small amount of purified water. The usual dose of the drug for an adult is 15 to 20 drops three times a day. The daily dose of Valocordin, whose indications for use indicate its ability to fight insomnia and sleep disorders, can be increased to 30 drops. For children under 12 years of age, the dosage of the drug is determined at the rate of one drop per one year of life. The duration of the course of treatment and the frequency of medication taken by children is determined by their attending physician, taking into account medical indications.

Contraindications

There are few reasons to refuse use. But you must adhere to them strictly to avoid dangerous results and negative effects on health.

Among them:

  • Pregnancy. Regardless of the deadline. Because the components of the medication, on the one hand, are toxic, which will negatively affect the child. On the other hand, they affect muscle tone, which is why it can affect the uterus, which means miscarriage or premature birth.
  • Breast-feeding. The entire period of lactation, due to the penetration of the active substance into milk.
  • Age. Some sources say from 15 years, others about other numbers. The manufacturer indicates that use is inadmissible for persons under 18. Patients and even doctors often neglect this point.
  • Individual intolerance to one or a group of drug components. In this case, it makes sense to stop using it. The problem is that it is impossible to identify allergies without first taking the drug. In the absence of data on an individual reaction, it is worth taking the drug in a minimal amount, then judge by how you feel.
  • Renal or liver failure in the sub- and decompensated phase. That is, those situations when organs fail to cope with their own function so much that it is noticeable to the patient himself.

Valocordin is taken with great caution, because it is not always possible to accurately predict the effect even on a healthy body.

In addition, hops and mint have a pronounced allergenic potential. A reaction may not develop from the first use.

Interaction

With simultaneous use of Valocordin

with sedatives - enhanced effect. Simultaneous use with neuroleptics and tranquilizers enhances, and with central nervous system stimulants, weakens the effect of each component of the drug. Alcohol enhances the effects of Valocordin

and may increase its toxicity. Presence of Valocordin in the composition

phenobarbital can induce microsomal liver enzymes, and this makes its simultaneous use with drugs that are metabolized in the liver undesirable, since their concentration, and therefore effectiveness, will change as a result of more accelerated metabolism (indirect anticoagulants, antibiotics, sulfonamides). Phenobarbital weakens the effect of coumarin derivatives, corticosteroids, griseofulvin, and oral contraceptives.

Release form and composition

The drug Valocordin is available in the form of drops for oral administration in dark glass dropper bottles with a volume of 20 in a cardboard box. The bottle contains a clear liquid with a distinct minty smell.

The main active ingredients of the drops are phenobarbital and ethyl bromizovalerianate in equal quantities – 18.4 mg. In addition, the drug contains auxiliary components - ethanol 96%, peppermint oil, hop oil, purified water.

They also produce effervescent tablets 15 mg Valocordin Doxylamine, containing Doxylamine succinate and excipients.

What is the danger of Valocordin

Many patients take Valocordin to lower blood pressure or normalize sleep without a doctor's prescription. Is it really that safe? The drug can bring not only benefits to the body, but also harm. More often, the side effects of Valocordin are caused by improper use of the drug or the individual characteristics of the patient.

Once in the body, phenobarbital promotes the synthesis of microsomal enzymes in the liver. Against this background, other medications taken that are metabolized in the liver do not have the desired therapeutic effect.

Phenobarbital, which is part of the medication, is a narcotic substance and is prohibited in some countries. If the dosage is strictly observed, this component does not cause negative consequences. If you violate the doctor’s recommendations or take the drug for too long, there is a risk of addiction, disruption of the functioning of the central nervous system or the development of withdrawal syndrome.

In addition, the drug can affect concentration and memory. After taking it, driving vehicles and operating potentially dangerous machinery is prohibited.

A combination such as Valocordin and alcohol poses a serious threat to human life and health. Ethyl alcohol enhances the narcotic effect of phenobarbital, so when taking alcoholic beverages, the use of Valocordin becomes extremely dangerous.

Overdose and side effects

Numerous clinical trials have confirmed that the drug is generally well tolerated by patients. However, there have also been cases reported with minimal side effects. Such manifestations should include:

  • nausea;
  • stomach ache;
  • slight dizziness and dry mouth;
  • increased drowsiness and characteristic rashes on the skin.

All these manifestations can be eliminated. You just need to stop taking the medication. But sometimes negative reactions from the body are caused by a simple overdose. If the patient does not adhere to the recommendations received from the doctor or indicated in the instructions from the manufacturer, then he may experience symptoms of an overdose:

  • nausea;
  • vomit;
  • sleep disturbance;
  • increased level of anxiety.

Also, Valocordin and alcohol do not mix. Therefore, the risk of unpleasant symptoms increases:

  • slow heart rate and difficulty breathing;
  • attack of weakness;
  • low blood pressure and severe dizziness;
  • lethargy and apathy.

In case of a severe overdose, a person may even lose consciousness. In this case, you need to call an ambulance.

Analogs

There are a large number of drugs similar in their composition and therapeutic effect to the drug in question. Analogs of Valocordin can be as follows:

  • homeopathic Nott's drops - used for insomnia and excessive excitability of the central nervous system. The product has a relaxing effect and normalizes heart rate;
  • Cavinton tablets are used as a vasodilator, help improve oxygen supply to the brain, and help utilize excess glucose. The drug is prescribed to patients with neuralgic and mental disorders caused by cerebral circulatory disorders;
  • Sibazon tablets - eliminate spasms, have a relaxing effect, help get rid of seizures, and restore heart rhythm. Sibazon belongs to a number of psychotropic drugs;
  • Corvalcaps capsules are prescribed to overcome excessive nervous excitability, normalize sleep, and lower blood pressure. Indications for use include insomnia, neuroses, conditions accompanied by spasm of the coronary vessels, and intestinal spasms.

Valoserdin is a popular analogue of Valocordin.
Special attention should be paid to such an analogue as Valoserdin. Patients often compare these two drugs, asking which is better and what is the difference between these drugs? Valoserdin is a Russian medicine, Valocordin is a German drug

In terms of their therapeutic effect, both drugs are identical. Their difference is in composition and cost. Valoserdin contains oregano oil, Valocordin does not. Valoserdin costs almost half as much as the German drug.

pharmachologic effect

The therapeutic effect of Valocordin is due to the pharmacological properties of its components. Phenobarbital has a vasodilating (vasodilator), sedative (calming) effect and a mild hypnotic effect.

Under its influence, the excitation of the central nervous system is reduced, and optimal conditions for natural sleep are created. Ethyl bromizovalerianate also has sedative and hypnotic effects. This component has an antispasmodic effect. Peppermint oil has reflex antispasmodic and vasodilating activity.

Mechanism of action

The active substance leads to inhibition of the activity of the nervous system, eliminates spasm of blood vessels, thus inducing sleep.

The tableted drug does not have a pronounced therapeutic effect, since it is not used in the treatment of diseases of the heart and blood vessels. The drug is intended to reduce negative symptoms of nervous disorders and improve the general condition of the patient.

The active components of the drug can lead to a decrease in blood pressure, so taking the drug is contraindicated for hypotensive patients. In some situations, specialists prescribe tablets for the complex treatment of arterial hypertension to gradually reduce blood pressure levels.

Mechanism of action and methods of application

The drug works based on two effects. The first concerns the biochemical component. It is caused by a bromine derivative and phenobarbital.

The other has a connection with a reflex effect on the patient’s body. This effect is mainly due to the presence of hop and peppermint oils.

If we present a complete list of effects that are achieved by taking Valocordin, the list will be as follows:

  • Normalization of heart and vascular tone. They are being strengthened. Objectively, it is manifested by an increase in tissue elasticity, a decrease in the rate and intensity of oxidation of walls and structures, which prevents their degeneration and destruction.
  • Reduced blood pressure. The effect is hardly noticeable, however, in the early stages of hypertension or symptomatic increase in indicators, it makes sense to use the name in a system with other pharmaceuticals.
  • Antispasmodic effect. Based on the reflex ability of the drug to dilate blood vessels through its effect on the nervous system. Unfortunately, the intensity and severity of this depend on the body of a particular patient, therefore it is extremely difficult or impossible to predict the magnitude of the beneficial effect in advance.
  • Anesthesia. The ability to relieve discomfort is additional. But this is not always achieved. Therefore, strictly speaking, using Valocordin to normalize well-being in case of heart disease and especially emergency conditions does not make much sense.
  • Vasodilation. Due to this, adequate blood flow is restored. Since Valocordin in the form of drops acts non-selectively, non-selectively and normalizes the condition of arteries and capillaries throughout the body, the effect concerns the heart, brain and internal organs. However, it is quite weak, so for serious diseases there is no point in using it either.
  • Sleep restoration. Used in some forms of violation. The action is again controversial; the drug will not help everyone. We need to look at the causes of the disorder.
  • Calming effect. Valocordin helps against neuroses and anxiety due to the presence of phenobarbital. But sometimes side effects outweigh the benefits and use is unacceptable.

Paradoxically, the drug is prescribed to relatively healthy people.

Valocordin should be taken orally, 15-20 drops 3 times a day before meals, dissolved in 50 milliliters of water. For insomnia, the dose can be increased to 30 drops. The total duration of treatment is determined by the doctor.

The mechanism of action on the body is complex and multiple, but weak in strength, so doctors have no reason to use it for the treatment of complex dangerous diseases. It is better to give preference to specialized medications.

special instructions

If it is necessary to prescribe the drug during lactation, the issue of stopping breastfeeding should be decided.

The drug contains 55 vol.% ethanol (the absolute content of ethanol in the maximum single dose (30 drops) is 0.469 g) and phenobarbital, so Valocordin

even when used correctly, it can impair the ability of patients to react quickly in certain situations, such as while on the street or when servicing cars. This is especially pronounced when taking alcohol at the same time.

With prolonged use of the drug, the formation of drug dependence is possible; Possible accumulation of bromine in the body and the development of poisoning.

Prescription during pregnancy

Despite the fact that experiences and stress in women carrying a child are common, taking Valocordin during pregnancy is strongly not recommended. The active components of the drug are able to penetrate into the blood, therefore, through the placenta. This is extremely dangerous for the child.

Especially during the formation of the fetal neural tube. To reduce nervous stress and normalize sleep, pregnant women are allowed to take herbal preparations as prescribed by a doctor.

Side effects

If the dosage of the drug is not observed, the following disorders of organs and systems develop:

  • Nervous system (headache, dizziness, drowsiness, seizures).
  • Impaired function of the visual apparatus (increased intraocular pressure).
  • Disturbances in the functioning of the circulatory system (rapid heartbeat, decreased blood pressure, hypertension, disturbances in the functioning of the heart).
  • Respiratory dysfunction (bronchial obstruction, bronchospasm)
  • Digestive tract (dry mouth, stool disorder in the form of constipation and diarrhea, pain in the stomach).

Selecting the dosage individually can reduce the risk of complications in older people.

How to take Valocordin

According to the instructions, drops or tablets are taken orally. The dosage and duration of taking the medicine are prescribed by the doctor on an individual basis. Approximate average dosage of drops:

  • high blood pressure, nervousness: 15-20 drops two to three times a day before meals, wash down with a small amount of water;
  • tachycardia, pain in the heart area: 30-40 drops twice a day, washed down with sweet tea or water;
  • children from 14 to 18 years old 1-2 times a day, 3-8 drops.

Sometimes Valocordin is prescribed in tablets. The dosage of this dosage form is as follows:

  • single dose: 15-25 mg per day;
  • for the treatment of allergy symptoms: 25 mg every 4-6 hours (no more than 150 mg per day);
  • children from 6 to 12 years: 6.25-12.5 mg every 6 hours.

Reception features

After taking the pill, it is necessary to ensure a normal sleep duration, which is 7–8 hours, which will reduce the risk of a decrease in psychomotor reactions after waking up.

Effervescent tablets must first be dissolved in water

Rules that must be followed during the therapeutic course:

  1. Avoid sudden changes in body position, as this may cause slower reactions.
  2. During the course of treatment with Valocordin, it is not recommended to drink alcoholic beverages.
  3. Women during lactation while taking the medicine should stop breastfeeding and transfer the child to artificial feeding for the entire period of treatment.
  4. The drug reduces the reaction rate, so it is contraindicated to go outside and drive vehicles that require concentration.
  5. The tablets should be taken with a sufficient amount of liquid 60 minutes before going to bed.

Vacation conditions and price

The average cost of Valocordin-Doxylamine (25 mg/ml drops, 20 ml) in Moscow is 240 rubles. Drops are available in pharmacies without a doctor's prescription.

The shelf life of the medicine is 5 years from the production date indicated on the packaging. After this period, the drug cannot be taken orally. The instructions for use suggest storing the drug Valocordin out of the reach of children at a temperature of no more than 15 degrees (preferably in the refrigerator).

special instructions

When taking Valocordin, you need to pay attention to some instructions in the instructions. Excerpts from the special instructions paragraph:

the drug reduces concentration and speed of psychomotor reactions, so during the treatment period you should be careful when driving a car and operating machinery; if after taking the medicine the pain in the heart area does not go away, consult a doctor to eliminate the risk of acute coronary syndrome; the drug is used with caution for hyperkinesis, hyperthyroidism, hypoadrenal function, heart failure, severe arterial hypotension, persistent pain, acute drug intoxication; long-term therapy with Valocordin is not recommended due to the risk of developing drug dependence, accumulation of bromine and the development of poisoning with this substance

Is the drug compatible with alcohol?

The metabolism of alcohol and Valocordin occurs in the liver. To neutralize these substances, the same biochemical reactions are used, which occur only in the presence of special proteins (enzymes). Hepatocytes inactivate foreign compounds, preventing their toxic effect on the body.

However, if the liver has to process two substances at the same time, its truss systems are unable to inactivate the entire volume at once. Therefore, the process is delayed, allowing the full spectrum of toxic effects of the drug and ethanol to manifest itself. This mechanism explains the impossibility of compatibility of hangover and phenobarbital in one organism at the same time.

Taking Valocordin against the background of alcoholism leads to side effects of this medication and increased hangover symptoms:

  • signs of dysfunction of the gastrointestinal tract (constipation, diarrhea, malabsorption syndrome);
  • allergic reactions;
  • impaired concentration and reaction speed.

Analogs

An analogue of Valocordin in terms of active ingredients is the drug Corvaldin.

According to the mechanism of action, Valocordin has a large number of analogues in various dosage forms:

  • Valerian tincture;
  • Elixir – Klosterfrau Melisana;
  • Tablets - Bromizoval, Corvalol, Valdispert, Valerian Forte, Valerian, Dormiplant, Potassium bromide, Bromcamphor, Sympatil, Novo-Passit, Patrimin, Songa night;
  • Drops for oral administration - Valemidin, Valeodicramen, Valerianahel, Valokormid, Doppelgerts Melissa, Corvalol, Notta, Passidorm;
  • Oral solution – Valeran, Novo-Passit;
  • Solution for injection – Litonit.

Before using analogues, consult your doctor.

Directions for use and dosage

Before taking the drug, you should consult your doctor.

According to the official instructions, Valocordin is available in the following forms, which must be used in accordance with the recommended dosage.

Release formVolumeDosagePeculiarities
Drops for oral (internal) administrationBottles of 20 and 50 mlAdults: 15-20 drops once, up to three doses per day. Children: 3-15 drops three times daily For insomnia, it is possible to increase the single dose to 30 drops. Calculation for children can be made using the formula: 1 drop per year of life

Valocordin tablets retain their name, but the active ingredient in this drug is doxylamine. It has similar effects:

  • sleeping pills (pronounced, the main one for this medication);
  • sedative (implemented later);
  • antihistamine.

Since the composition contains mint oil, when the effervescent tablet is dissolved in water, the taste and smell resembles Valocordin (a sedative). However, it is recommended to take this drug half an hour before the desired time of falling asleep, as a remedy for insomnia.

Directions for use: dissolve the required number of drops in 100-150 ml of clean water at a comfortable temperature. Take before meals.

Some doctors allow the possibility of using the drug with sugar (add to water or drop Valocordin directly onto a piece of sweets).

Valocordin tablets and alcohol

Parallel use of the medication with alcohol increases its toxic effect on the liver.

Ethanol negatively affects the functional ability of cells of the nervous system

Concomitant use of the drug with alcoholic beverages can cause the following symptoms:

  • dizziness;
  • tachycardia;
  • speech function disorder;
  • impairment of motor activity;
  • drowsiness;
  • coma.

To avoid complications, alcohol can be consumed 4–5 days after using the drug.

Regular use of the drug can be addictive, and therefore the patient constantly increases the therapeutic dose of the drug.

Valocardine in tablet form is used to treat nervous conditions that cause sleep disorders. The mild effect of the drug allows you to normalize falling asleep and deepen the sleep phases. However, with an overdose, complications may arise, so the dose is selected individually for each patient, provided that all recommendations are followed.

What everyone should know

  1. Long-term uncontrolled use of the drug in excess of the prescribed dose can lead to dependence due to addiction to phenobarbital and chronic bromine poisoning - bromism. Bromine, released from ethyl bromoisovalerate, accumulates in the body, gradually causing intoxication. Manifestations of bromism: gastrointestinal disorders, bronchitis, rhinitis, conjunctivitis, acne, apathy, confusion, depression, speech and sleep disorders, memory impairment and other neurological disorders.
  2. If you abruptly stop taking drops after prolonged use, withdrawal syndrome develops.
  3. The product is incompatible with alcohol, which enhances its effect and increases toxicity.
  4. It is undesirable to combine drops with tranquilizers, antipsychotics, and sedatives. The latter enhance the effect of Valocordin, and the former weaken it. Thus, you can get the opposite effect to the expected one.
  5. Do not take drops before driving a car, as they cause mild retardation and a decrease in the speed of psychomotor reactions.

Alcohol compatibility

When considering whether Valocordin can be taken after drinking alcohol, it should be noted that such compatibility is extremely dangerous to health. The medicine contains phenobarbital, which is a narcotic substance. Ethyl alcohol, which is part of alcoholic beverages, can provoke the most negative consequences for human life and health, including death.

Many people wonder whether Valocordin and alcohol are compatible. The medicine is not compatible with alcoholic drinks. It should be remembered that the alcohol component reduces the effect of any medication.

Valocordin is no exception. To the question whether it is possible to drink Valocordin after consuming alcohol, the answer is negative. That is why drinking alcoholic beverages should be avoided during therapy.

Reviews of treatment with Valocordin

Karina: I carry either Valocordin or Corvalol in my purse all the time, as I suffer from increased nervous excitability at work. As soon as there is any stress, I immediately take the drug so as not to aggravate my condition. I don’t take the course, so I haven’t noticed any side effects.

Anton: A good product, really proven and effective. I drink it from time to time when there is an urgent need to put myself in a calm state or when insomnia attacks.

Victoria: The drug may be good, but I really can’t stand it. I immediately seem to switch off, and my head starts to hurt.

Svetlana: Because of hypertension, I periodically take a course of the drug – it helps me recover. And if an attack of high blood pressure takes you by surprise, then there are always life-saving drops in your purse - I use a dosage ratio of 1.5, and relief comes quickly.

Method and features of application

The drug Valocordin is intended for oral use and is produced in the form of drops. It is recommended to use the drug before eating. Drops are added in the recommended dosage to water and then drunk. The exact dosage and duration of use of the drug is determined by the attending physician; in addition, general recommendations for the use of the drug are contained in the instructions for use.

The average daily dosage varies from 15 to 20 drops three times a day. Patients who suffer from sleep disorders are prescribed 30 drops per day before going to bed. The maximum daily dosage is 150 drops. The drug has a hypnotic effect, so you should take the medicine in the evening.

If the patient takes the drug during the day, then you should drive with caution, or it is better to completely stop driving vehicles. You should also refrain from performing work that requires increased concentration. The drug should not be prescribed to children under 18 years of age.

The recommended dosage for children is one drop for every year of life. The drug contains ethanol, so the drug should not be prescribed to patients who abuse alcohol, suffer from head and brain damage, or liver disease. The drug can only be prescribed by the attending physician and must be taken under his supervision.

Women who are pregnant should not take the drug. During breastfeeding, the drug can be taken only if the woman stops breastfeeding while taking it. In case of an overdose of the drug, patients may experience adverse reactions of the body, while the desire to sleep increases, and vestibular disorders also appear.

In case of a severe overdose of the drug, the patient may experience a significant deterioration in his condition, including stopping breathing and cardiac muscle function and coma. In acute forms of drug intoxication, the patient should be taken to a medical facility as quickly as possible to receive urgent therapeutic care. If adverse reactions occur in the body, you should immediately stop taking the drug, give the patient an adsorbent drug and perform gastric lavage.

Valocordin-Doxylamine and its composition

In addition to the classic Valocordin, the company Crevel Meuselbach GmbH produces a medicine with the trade name Valocordin-Doxylamine. The packaging, release form and appearance of the solution of this drug are the same as that of classic Valocordin. However, the composition and effect of the drugs differ.

Valocordin-Doxylamine contains doxylamine succinate as an active ingredient. This substance acts as a sleeping pill and is prescribed for sleep disorders, while Valocordin is often taken as a remedy to relieve heart pain and calm the nerves. As additional components of the composition, Valocordin-Doxylamine contains:

  • ethanol;
  • water;
  • peppermint oil.

The drug has a distinct mint smell. Valocordin-Doxylamine is taken half an hour to an hour before expected sleep: add 22 drops of the drug to a glass of clean water and drink. For serious sleep problems, the dose of the drug can be increased to 44 drops. However, it is worth keeping in mind that this is the maximum permissible daily dose.

Important: the drug is potent. Taking it in the evening before bed, it cannot be ruled out that drowsiness will be observed the next morning. You should not take drops if you have important things planned the next day that require increased concentration.

Valocordin-Doxylamine during pregnancy

The official instructions for the drug say that Valocordin-Doxylamine should be taken with caution by pregnant women. Pregnancy is not included in the list of contraindications. However, the decision to use the medication during such a crucial period should not be made independently.

Taking Valocordin-Doxylamine can lead to addiction, both mental and physical. The degree of dependence is influenced by the frequency and duration of sedative use. Valocordin-Doxylamine is available only with a doctor's prescription. But even if you have a bottle of drops in your home medicine cabinet, we do not recommend that you take it even once without the consent of the gynecologist monitoring your pregnancy.

Action for arterial hypertension

There is no pronounced therapeutic effect from the drops, although it is noted that they help with the initial stage of hypertension. The medicine, due to its reflex vasodilator and sedative activity, can quickly normalize a slight or moderate increase in blood pressure, calm the nervous system, and help relax. Valocordin is especially effective for a slight increase in blood pressure due to stress, weather sensitivity, nervous overexcitation, and excessive physical activity.

But you cannot rely only on these drops and use them alone. To prevent the progression of the disease and prevent hypertensive crises, you need to take antihypertensive drugs (lowering blood pressure) regularly.

Examples of antihypertensive drugs

Contraindications to taking the drug

When using drops, it is important to adhere to a number of restrictions, since if they are ignored, dangerous health consequences may follow. So, contraindications to taking Valocordin are:

  • severe form of renal failure;
  • obvious liver dysfunction;
  • increased individual sensitivity to the components of the composition;
  • Do not use the drug during pregnancy or during breastfeeding (if it becomes necessary to drink the drug, breastfeeding should be temporarily stopped).

Particular caution in using drops is shown under the age of 18 years, with head injuries, brain diseases and alcoholism - these restrictions are due to the inclusion of alcohol in the composition of the medicine.

Reviews and analogues

Valocordin really quickly has a positive effect, which is very attractive for a sick person. In addition, the low cost and over-the-counter availability make it possible to easily purchase this medication at any pharmacy.

However, this is not a treatment, but only a drug that relieves the symptoms of certain neurological and psychological diseases. The older generation uses Valocordin as a means of self-medication, without going into details of the composition of the drug and its pharmacological effect.

In Europe and America, Valocordin has long been prohibited from being sold without a prescription.

This is due to the fact that it contains phenobarbital, a potent drug that, even in small doses, has a negative effect on cognitive function, especially in people of retirement age.

Clinical studies have proven that Valocordin and its analogues cause mental and physical dependence. In addition, over time, the body becomes insensitive to the initial dose and requires an increase in the amount of the drug at a time. Sometimes this leads to an overdose.

At the same time, abrupt withdrawal of Validol leads to the following symptoms:

  • Tremor
  • Insomnia
  • Vomit
  • Dizziness
  • Convulsions
  • Tachycardia

On the pharmaceutical market you can find many analogues of the German Valocordin - Corvalol, Barboval, Valordin, Corvaldin, Corvaltab, Reladorm and Valoserdin. All of them contain phenobarbital and ethyl bromoisovalerate, and the components of plant origin may differ slightly, but have a similar pharmacological effect.

Valocordin is a drug that is considered a “classic” of self-medication among the elderly generation, but its side effects cancel out all the positive properties of the drug.

Consequences of excessive intake

An overdose of Valocordin does not occur if it is taken correctly, since the drug is usually well tolerated by patients. However, as already noted, the main toxic component of Valocordin is phenobarbital. There are contraindications to the use of such a component, when even small quantities can cause enormous harm.

The main danger of phenobarbital is that it can quickly become addictive. This means that a person needs to constantly increase the dose. Interestingly, in some countries large doses of this component are used as a poison in the death penalty.

In severe cases, poisoning is characterized by the following symptoms:

  1. Severe impairment of respiratory function.
  2. A sharp increase in heart rate.
  3. Blood pressure drop.
  4. Vascular insufficiency.
  5. Deep coma.
  6. Severe oxygen starvation of tissues.

Involuntary movements similar to convulsions are often observed. If urgent measures are not taken, death may occur due to pulmonary edema or paralysis of the respiratory center.

Mild overdose is characterized by the following symptoms:

  • increased fatigue and drowsiness;
  • deep sleep;
  • dizziness;
  • impaired coordination of movements.

Long-term use of large quantities of this drug can cause the following phenomena in the body:

  1. Confusion.
  2. Depression or apathy.
  3. The appearance of acne on the face and other parts of the body.
  4. Rhinitis.
  5. Conjunctivitis.

Less severe consequences of poisoning are memory impairment, pneumonia, gait disturbances, and severe depression.

What is the lethal dose of such a drug for humans? A single dose of half a bottle (which is 10 milliliters) can cause severe changes in a person, leading to death. You can be poisoned with smaller doses of Valocordin if you take sedatives or alcohol.

What can replace the drug?

Today, among the pharmaceutical products presented, there are many drugs that are safe for the mother and fetus. They have a calming effect, relieve tension, and relieve anxiety and depressive symptoms.

Medicinal herbs are used to make them, so a pregnant woman needs to remember the possibility of allergic reactions to one or another component. Despite the positive effects, it is advisable that the drugs be prescribed by a doctor. Pay attention to the following drugs:

  1. Persen - has a sedative effect thanks to extracts of valerian, lemon balm and mint. Has a mild effect on neuroses and insomnia. Harmless during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  2. Biovital - contains vitamins, extract from hawthorn fruits, and also uses flowers and leaves of this plant, motherwort extract. It is used as a sedative after stress, to restore normal sleep, and improve performance. The drug is approved during pregnancy.
  3. Magne-B6 - reduces irritability, restores loss of strength, improves heart rhythm, helps to fall asleep quickly. This occurs due to the filling of the body with magnesium. Not contraindicated for pregnant women.

Can Valocordin be used during pregnancy?

Can Valocordin be used during pregnancy?

Pharmacological properties

The main active ingredients of Valocordin are phenobarbital and bromoisovaleric acid ester.

    • The presence of phenobarbital in the drug makes it dangerous for the fetus, so during pregnancy it is recommended to avoid taking Valocordin drops. Phenobarbital is a potent substance that is used in anticonvulsants and has a pronounced sedative effect. Phenobarbital freely penetrates the placental barrier and, entering the fetal bloodstream, has a depressing effect on the nervous system of the unborn child. Also, this component negatively affects the hematopoietic organs, disrupting the formation of full-fledged red blood cells.

• Bromoisovaleric acid ester has a hypnotic, sedative and antispasmodic effect.

• Peppermint oil, which is part of Valocordin, can cause an increase in estrogen levels and the onset of premature labor.

Indications for use

As a result of the negative effect on the fetus of the components of Valocordin, this drug is not recommended for use during pregnancy, as well as during the lactation period due to the possibility of potent substances entering the child’s body through breast milk.

Pharmacological properties

The therapeutic effect of Valocordin is due to the pharmacological properties of its components.
Phenobarbital has a vasodilating (vasodilator), sedative (calming) effect and a mild hypnotic effect. Under its influence, the excitation of the central nervous system is reduced, and optimal conditions for natural sleep are created. Ethyl bromizovalerianate also has sedative and hypnotic effects. This component has an antispasmodic effect. Peppermint oil has reflex antispasmodic and vasodilating activity.

In combination with sedatives, the effect is enhanced. The effect of tranquilizers and antipsychotics is enhanced when taken simultaneously with Valocordin, and central nervous system stimulants lose their effectiveness.

    Valocordin is a popular drug that is used to relieve nervous tension and stress, as well as to relieve symptoms of disorders in the functioning of the heart muscle and blood vessels. This drug has a complex effect on the patient’s body, having a hypnotic and sedative effect. The medication will help get rid of sleep disorders, nervous and mental disorders, overexertion and stress. In addition, the drug helps lower blood pressure, so it is often recommended to be taken for arterial hypertension.

    The drug is produced in the form of drops, which are intended for oral use. The drug contains two main active ingredients - phenobarbital and ethyl ester of alpha-bromoisovaleric acid. Phenobarbital is an antiepileptic drug from the group of barbiturates, which, among other things, also has a hypnotic effect.

    Ethyl ester of alpha-bromoisovaleric acid calms nerve endings, relieves involuntary muscle contractions, and promotes vasodilation. It must be remembered that Valocordin is a medicine that helps relieve symptomatic signs of diseases and temporarily improve the condition, but does not eliminate the disease itself.

Why is the drug harmful and dangerous?

Valocordin can not only be beneficial to human health, it can also be harmful, and this is often due to either the individual characteristics of the body or a violation of the basic rules for using the drug.

Phenobarbital in the composition of the drug causes the production of microsomal liver enzymes, which makes it extremely undesirable to use the drug simultaneously with other tablets that are metabolized in the liver, otherwise their activity will be significantly reduced. In general, this component is the most dangerous in the composition, and in some countries it is generally prohibited for use as a narcotic drug. That is why the temporary use of Valocordin is of particular importance, otherwise poisoning, addiction and even mental disorders are possible.

It is necessary to understand that due to the presence of phenobarbital and alcohol in the composition, taking the drug can negatively affect the ability to react quickly, which is dangerous when driving a car and when being on the street in general. Drops become a real threat if they are taken with alcohol. Despite the widespread belief that drops can help with a hangover, this is not the case and such actions can only aggravate the load on the body. If Valocordin is used for a long time, then negative consequences are also possible in the form of the development of drug addiction and poisoning due to the accumulation of bromine in the body.

Does Valocordin reduce blood pressure?

Have you been trying to cure HYPERTENSION for many years?

Head of the Institute of Treatment: “You will be amazed at how easy it is to cure hypertension by taking it every day...

People suffering from disorders of the cardiovascular system often resort to taking a medication such as valocordin to normalize their condition. Most often, this drug is used by people suffering from hypertension.

The use of the drug requires knowledge of the issue - valocordin increases or decreases blood pressure. This is due to the fact that hypertensive patients need to reduce blood pressure to an acceptable level. On the contrary, for hypotensive patients it should be increased, since hypotension is characterized by low blood pressure.

Valocordin is a drug whose composition is selected in such a way that taking the drug not only promotes vasodilation, but also relieves vasospasm, calms the nervous system and creates a mild hypnotic effect on a person.

The drug contains a chemical compound that has a narcotic effect – phenobarbital. The presence of a narcotic substance in the composition of the drug determines a ban on its use by people who have been identified as having an unstable psyche and a depressive state. In addition, the drug should not be used by people who have obsessive suicidal ideas. For the same reasons, the drug should not be used by patients with various addictions, such as:

  • alcoholic;
  • narcotic.

The medicine has gained its popularity due to its low cost.

The remedy is produced in the form of drops and, due to its cost, is accessible to all segments of the population.

The answer to the question of whether Valocordin lowers blood pressure will be in the affirmative. Due to its properties, this drug can reduce blood pressure. This happens due to the relaxation of blood vessels and the removal of spasms of the smooth muscle muscles that form the basis of the vascular wall.

Effect of the drug on blood pressure

There is an opinion among ordinary people that the use of Valocordin leads to an increase in blood pressure. This opinion is wrong. The components that make up the drug Valocordin are not capable of increasing blood pressure levels.

At what pressure is it recommended to use Valocordin?

This medication does not have a direct effect on hypertension.

Does Valocordin lower blood pressure?

The answer to this question will always be in the affirmative, but with a small caveat - such a decrease is insignificant. It is recommended to use this drug only in the early stages of the disease, in cases where it is necessary to slightly reduce this vital indicator.

It is optimal to use it when blood pressure rises as a result of a stressful situation or the onset of a depressive state. A decrease in blood pressure occurs in such a situation due to the provision of a sedative effect on the patient’s body; it can also be recommended to take the drug when blood pressure increases when a person is exposed to increased physical activity or during a sudden change in weather conditions.

If a person experiences a negative reaction to a sudden change in weather conditions, taking Valocordin can slightly reduce blood pressure, which significantly improves the condition of the patient’s body.

Hypertension will go away, and the pressure will be 120 over 80 if you include it in the diet...

Hypertension will disappear forever! Here's the secret...

Valocordin lowers blood pressure; the drug is not capable of raising the level of this vital indicator due to its chemical composition.

In addition to phenobarbital, the medicine includes a compound such as ethyl bromizovalerianate.

This component can have the following effects on the patient:

  1. Antispasmodic.
  2. Calming.
  3. Hypnotic. This effect is exerted on the body due to the presence of bromine in the composition of the substance.

Peppermint oil contained in the medicine has a beneficial effect on the lumen of blood vessels.

Instructions for use of the drug

Valocordin must be used with great caution. Since the medicine contains bromine and phenobarbital, the dosage must be calculated very accurately. Most often, the dosage prescribed by a doctor is from 15 to 20 drops. In some cases, the dosage may be changed by the attending physician depending on the patient's condition.

The instructions for using the medication have a caveat that in the presence of tachycardia or VSD of the hypertensive type, the dosage can be doubled if necessary.

But when taking a medicine, consultation with your doctor is required and you should not increase the dosage of the medicine taken without his permission, as this may affect the patient’s condition.

An increased dosage may cause the patient to experience:

  • behavioral inhibition;
  • various hallucinations;
  • disturbances in coordination of movements.

The use of Valocordin leads to dependence and tends to accumulate in the tissues of the body. When taking medication, it is also worth considering the ability of bromine to accumulate in tissue cells, and removing bromine from the body is problematic

Treatment with the drug can provoke the appearance of spasmodic contractions of the intestinal muscles. This intestinal reaction leads to constipation.

Additional negative effects that occur when using Valocordin during treatment are:

  1. Drowsiness.
  2. Dizziness.

In some cases, side effects may occur. One of the main side effects is the development of an allergic reaction, the second most common side effect is a disorder in the functioning of the digestive system.

Long-term use of Valocordin in excessive doses leads to addiction and bromine poisoning.

Bromine poisoning can be identified by the following signs:

  • the appearance of confusion in consciousness;
  • the appearance of apathy;
  • development of ataxia;
  • acne;
  • the occurrence of rhinitis;
  • the appearance of conjunctivitis.

When abruptly stopping the drug, the patient develops a withdrawal syndrome.

In case of overdose, intoxication can occur even with a one-time dose of the medicine.

Valocordin and low blood pressure

The use of the medication in case of low blood pressure is prohibited; in case of hypotension, blood pressure is already low. The use of medication can further reduce it.

If there is an urgent need to use the medicine, it is allowed to be used only once. In this case, you should know how many drops it is permissible to use the medicine. It is allowed to use the drug in a dosage of no more than 15 drops at low blood pressure.

If there is no urgent need, then hypotensive patients should refuse Valocordin. There are other drugs that can be taken if the patient has hypotension.

In addition, the drug is prohibited:

  1. For diabetes mellitus.
  2. During the period of bearing a child.
  3. In the presence of pathological processes in the tissues of the kidneys and liver, renal hypertension.
  4. In case of individual intolerance.

The pharmacological action of the drug is more suitable for hypertensive patients than for hypotensive patients. For this reason, it should not be taken by people with low blood pressure, as it can cause fainting.

It is prohibited to use the medicine without consulting your doctor. Self-administration of the drug can cause side and negative effects that significantly worsen the patient’s condition.

Why do experts not recommend using this drug?

According to doctors, Valocordin is not recommended for use, as it causes a number of problems. First of all, it is only allowed for adults. For children, any number of drops is strictly contraindicated, as they can be addictive and contribute to severe damage to the central nervous system.

Phenobarbital can cause addiction in the patient. There is always a risk of overdose, because rarely can anyone calculate the dosage correctly. However, in each case it must be calculated accurately. Long-term use of such a drug is strictly prohibited: it can only be allowed for symptomatic relief of anxiety and heart pain. Remember that it does not cure the problem, but only masks it.

Ethyl bromizovalerianate contains bromine. And it is very slowly eliminated from the body. With long-term use of Valocordin, it accumulates in the body very quickly and ultimately leads to chronic intoxication.

The correct intake of this medicine is before meals. It is very important to take no more than 20 drops of the product per dose. And one more note: it is forbidden to use the medicine as self-medication.

So, Valocordin is an unsafe drug. Still, it is better to refrain from using it, as it can lead to chronic intoxication and addiction.

About the drug Valocordin

Valocordin is a sedative, after taking which an antispasmodic, vasodilator, sedative, relaxing and hypnotic effect is observed. The drug can lower blood pressure. The medication contains potent psychotropic substances - phenobarbital and ethyl ester of a-bromoisovaleric acid. In many countries, for example, in America, drugs with a similar composition are prohibited from sale. In our country, Valocordin is sold without a prescription, although several years ago the drug was included in the prescription list. This was followed by a large number of complaints from people suffering from diseases of the cardiovascular system and Valocordin was returned to over-the-counter availability.

In addition to the active ingredients, the drug contains water, alcohol, mint and hop oils. The medication is available in the form of drops, in bottles of 20 and 50 milliliters. The bottle is equipped with a dropper for easy determination of the required dose of the drug. The solution itself has a specific, memorable smell. The drug does not contain sugar, preservatives or dyes.

When is Valocordin prescribed?

Valocordin is taken in the following cases:

  • for heart disease and disorders of its functioning;
  • with increased anxiety, restlessness, nervousness;
  • for sleep disorders and insomnia;
  • under stress.

Can Valocordin be taken by pregnant women?

The above indications for the use of the drug are often observed in pregnant women. During the period of bearing a baby, a woman’s psycho-emotional state can change greatly, and the culprit of this process is the growing level of the hormone progesterone. Pregnant women often experience sudden changes in mood, outbursts of anger, tearfulness, and depression. Many women have difficulty controlling their emotional state.

Sleep problems become relevant for pregnant women at different stages. In the first trimester, sleep disturbances may occur due to the woman’s worries. Even if the pregnancy was planned, the expectant mother must get used to the idea that a new life is developing inside her and accept her new status. In the later stages, insomnia may develop due to fear of the upcoming birth. Additional difficulties with falling asleep are caused by a rapidly growing belly; it is difficult for a woman to find a comfortable position, and it is difficult to change it during sleep. The uterus puts pressure on the bladder, resulting in the expectant mother having to wake up several times a night to go to the toilet.

It would seem that Valocordin could solve these problems. However, taking Valocordin during pregnancy is prohibited. Reviews from expectant mothers, for whom the drug takes pride of place in their home medicine cabinets, say that many of them did not expect to find such a contraindication in the annotation. But if in the normal state many people pay attention only to the “Dosage” item, it is extremely important for pregnant women to carefully study the instructions for use for any medication.

Find out how to use Buscopan suppositories during pregnancy.

You can read here why the concentration of neutrophils in a child’s blood decreases.

Valocordin is strictly prohibited for pregnant women. The drug contains ethanol, that is, alcohol. The substance easily penetrates to the baby, having a teratogenic effect on him - leading to the development of abnormalities and deformities in the child. Doctors warn that ethanol is dangerous during pregnancy in any doses.

Phenobarbital, which is part of the drug, can lead to blood clotting disorders in a child. Clinical studies have shown that when taking phenobarbital during pregnancy, a woman's risk of developing postpartum hemorrhage increased. Severe bleeding occurred in young mothers in the first days after birth. If a woman took drugs containing phenobarbital while pregnant, her birth should be carried out under conditions of resuscitation readiness.

During lactation, Valocordin is also prohibited. Phenobarbital can pass into breast milk. When reaching a child, the substance can severely depress the nervous system. If a nursing mother needs to take Valocordin, breastfeeding will have to be interrupted.

In addition, Valocordin is contraindicated in cases of liver and kidney dysfunction and under the age of 18 years.

First aid for symptoms of intoxication

Emergency measures for intoxication with Valocordin are as follows.

  • Gastric lavage. The patient should drink at least one liter of water and then artificially induce vomiting. This measure will be effective if no more than 1 hour has passed after taking Valocordin.
  • Use of sorbent. This is necessary to prevent active components from entering the bloodstream from the small intestine. Activated carbon, Smecta, will do.
  • Warm drinking accelerates the removal of toxic drugs from the blood.

Sometimes gastric lavage is enough to remove the drug and prevent it from spreading into the blood. However, when the patient has drunk a large number of drops, emergency care will be completely different.

In severe cases, detoxification is carried out in intensive care units. Immediate measures in such cases are as follows:

  1. Gastric lavage with a probe.
  2. Prevention of the development of severe respiratory and heart failure.
  3. Forced diuresis.
  4. Tracheal intubation.
  5. In case of coma - mechanical ventilation.

In case of bromine poisoning, a sodium chloride solution is administered: it stops its effect.

Corvalol: components, how it works, instructions for use, to whom it is indicated, contraindications

The modern pharmacological market offers dozens of sedatives, sleeping pills and antidepressants, but many people, especially the elderly, still trust proven drugs - Corvalol and Valocordin.

Corvalol has gained popularity due to its availability and low cost, and its effectiveness as a sedative cannot be denied. At the same time, many adherents of treatment with these drops forget about the potential danger that can be fraught with the use of excessive amounts of even the most natural herbal preparation. Corvalol, by the way, is not so “natural”, because it contains synthetic psychotropic components, and an impressive concentration of alcohol can make the drug dangerous for certain categories of patients.

Valocordin, an analogue of Corvalol, was created in pre-war Germany. In the post-war years, the miraculous remedy for nervous disorders and insomnia became extremely popular, which served as an impetus for its industrial production in Western Europe and the Soviet Union. In Kyiv, since 1960, they began to produce a drug called “Corvalol”, excluding hop cone oil from the recipe for the classic Valocordin. Thus, from the second half of the last century to the present day, Corvalol began to occupy an honorable place in the first-aid kits of millions of Russians and residents of other countries of the post-Soviet space.

Nowadays, Corvalol is allowed for free sale in Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, and some Asian countries, and in Europe itself its production has long been abandoned in favor of more modern and effective sedatives. Moreover, phenobarbital, which is part of Corvalol, makes the drug prohibited for import into the USA, Lithuania and many other European countries. This is worth knowing and remembering for those who like to calm their nerves with Corvalol drops and are used to taking it with them on trips.

In addition to the sedative effect, Corvalol has a number of side effects and can cause addiction, neurological disorders and even withdrawal symptoms. Before using it, you should carefully read the instructions for use, which indicate the permissible dose per dose and the conditions when the drug can really help.

Composition and principle of action of Corvalol

Corvalol is a combination product that contains both herbal and synthetic components - alpha-bromoisovaleric acid ester, phenobarbital, sodium hydroxide to dissolve phenobarbital, peppermint oil, ethanol 96% and water. (The alcohol content in the solution is at least 47%).

The ester of alpha-bromoisovaleric acid and ethyl alcohol act on the receptors of the oral cavity and pharynx, reducing the excitability of the nervous system, causing an inhibitory effect on the cerebral cortex and subcortex, and having an antispasmodic and sedative effect like the usual “valerian”. Large concentrations of Corvalol have a hypnotic effect.

Phenobarbital is a sedative component that inhibits the transmission of excitation impulses to the cerebral cortex and subcortical nerve centers. It causes drowsiness and a decrease in the speed of reactions, has a sedative and hypnotic effect. The degree of inhibition of excitatory signals in the brain is determined by the number of drops taken: if the recommended dosage is observed, they will calm you down; if it is exceeded, you can feel a strong hypnotic effect.

Thanks to the inhibitory effect of the components of Corvalol on the vasomotor center, the antispasmodic effect on the blood vessels of the heart and other organs, a weak hypotensive effect of the drug is achieved, which, however, should not be relied upon for arterial hypertension, which requires treatment with completely different drugs. Corvalol reduces blood pressure, but does not stop a hypertensive crisis, nor does it maintain normotension in a hypertensive patient.

Peppermint essential oil contains menthol and its esters, dilates blood vessels, acts as an antispasmodic, enhances contractility of the intestines and stomach, helping to fight bloating. In the oral cavity, peppermint creates a minty taste and an antiseptic effect.

Corvalol is produced in the form of an alcohol solution and tablets. It is recommended to take the drops before meals, dissolving them in water or dripping them onto a piece of sugar. The action begins approximately a quarter of an hour from the moment of administration under the tongue and the beginning of absorption in the oral cavity, where, by the way, more than half of the medicine taken is absorbed.

Analogues of Corvalol for their sedative effect are valocordin, valoserdin, adonis-bromine, barboval, novo-passit, tinctures of hawthorn and motherwort, etc. These drugs may differ in the components they contain, but are endowed with a similar sedative effect, many of them are exclusively herbal, do not contain synthetic psychotropic components, which can distinguish them favorably from Corvalol.

The components of Corvalol are able to penetrate the placenta, causing an adverse effect on the developing fetus, so it is better for pregnant women to avoid taking it at any stage of gestation. Bromine, released during the metabolism of the drug in the body, can accumulate, causing toxic effects.

Indications and contraindications for the use of Corvalol

Corvalol cannot be considered a medicine that can cure a specific disease. This remedy only eliminates individual symptoms of nervous disorders, so you should not think that taking it will help get rid of heart disease, renal colic, or insomnia. Many will object, because Corvalol really eliminates heart pain. This is true, but only the pain that is caused by stress or a nervous breakdown. Unfortunately, simple and cheap Corvalol drops do not treat pain due to angina pectoris and myocardial infarction.

Corvalol is able to calm the nerves and help with falling asleep, but it probably won’t take away developed depression, severe neurosis, and anxiety syndrome. Doctors should talk about this and patients themselves, who place their hopes on the miraculous power of the drops, should know.

It happens that the patient is so accustomed to taking Corvalol on every occasion that he simply ignores other medications, and it is not so easy to convince him of the need to take them. What is important here is the strength of the specialist’s conviction and the consciousness of the patient, who may well continue to “indulge” in nerve drops within reasonable limits, but at the same time taking other medications according to the regimen prescribed by the doctor.

Indications for the use of Corvalol are clearly defined and indicated in the instructions for the drug, which, however, does not prevent a large number of cardiology patients from taking it as a medicine for the “heart”. It is worth recalling here that Corvalol can relieve some unpleasant sensations from the heart and even pain, but caused more by nervous experiences than by changes in the coronary vessels and myocardium.

If there are structural lesions in the heart associated with atherosclerosis and other causes, taking Corvalol is a waste of not only money, albeit small, but also time, since heart diseases require more serious treatment with drugs from other groups.

Corvalol is not prescribed as the main medicine for any disease; this remedy is symptomatic, designed only to relieve some negative symptoms of neurosis, stress, and nervous tension, so the doctor usually only recommends taking it to a certain category of patients.

Corvalol helps with:

  • Neurosis-like disorders;
  • Insomnia caused by stress, anxiety (no more than two weeks);
  • Functional disorders of the heart (tachycardia, pain due to nervous tension and without connection with damage to the coronary arteries and myocardium);
  • Severe agitation with vegetative manifestations (sweating, feeling hot, redness of the face, increased heart rate, etc.);
  • Spasms in the gastrointestinal tract.

Contraindications

Corvalol is sold without a prescription and is taken uncontrollably by a large number of people, especially the elderly, who can increase the dose to the maximum and even exceed it, but this drug is not as harmless as it might seem. There are also contraindications to Corvalol and they are associated mainly with the phenobarbital, bromine and ethanol included in the drug. These include:

  1. Individual sensitivity or allergy to individual components of Corvalol;
  2. Severe disorders of the liver and kidneys;
  3. Pregnancy, breastfeeding;
  4. Children's age (the drug is contraindicated under 18 years of age);
  5. Lactase deficiency;
  6. Alcoholism;
  7. Epilepsy and convulsive syndrome of other etiologies;
  8. Traumatic brain injury or its consequences.

Instructions for use of Corvalol, features and side effects

It is better to take Corvalol on the recommendation of a doctor who prescribes it to those who have heart symptoms associated with neurosis. At the same time, the specialist had to be sure that there were no serious changes in the heart, since the course of the disease could change under the influence of drops, and the patient would not receive timely prescribed treatment for hypertension, angina, arrhythmia and other serious diseases.

You can also use all known soothing drops on your own, but carefully, following all the recommendations specified in the instructions for use. If the condition worsens while taking it, chest pain, discomfort in the abdomen occurs, anxiety or depression increases, then you should stop treatment with Corvalol and consult a doctor without delay.

Corvalol drops are the most popular form of the drug. The recommended dose per dose is 15-30 drops dissolved in a quarter glass of water; in case of severe anxiety and increased heart rate, it can be increased to 40-50 drops. The indicated amount of the product is dissolved in water or taken with sugar no more than three times a day, regardless of meals, although many recommend taking it after meals. The duration of use of Corvalol should not exceed two weeks, and it would be better if these drops do not become an indispensable medicine for chronic use, although many patients still “sin” with such treatment.

Elderly people, people with impaired liver or kidney function can take Corvalol, but it is better to slightly reduce the number of drops due to its longer disintegration and increased duration of action. For patients with suicidal tendencies or severe depression, it is better not to take Corvalol, and treatment should be prescribed by a psychotherapist. In case of angina pectoris, heart defects, or after a heart attack, Corvalol will not harm, but it cannot replace the accepted drug treatment regimen.

In addition to the liquid dosage form, it is possible to take the components of Corvalol in the form of tablets (Corvalol, Corvaltab). Corvalol tablets are prescribed in 1-2 pcs. in two to three doses per day. The absence of ethanol in the tablets still does not allow it to be prescribed to pregnant women and nursing mothers, transport drivers and people engaged in hazardous work, because phenobarbital is still there, and its effects are not compatible with these circumstances.

Considering the content of ethyl alcohol and a psychotropic component (phenobarbital) in the drug, it is quite logical to expect adverse reactions from Corvalol, especially if the recommended dosage or duration of administration has been exceeded. Many patients who have been addicted to Corvalol drops for a long time consider them harmless and harmless, many times exceeding the maximum permissible amounts per dose and, accordingly, encountering the adverse consequences of such uncontrolled treatment.

The most common side effects from taking Corvalol include:

  • Nausea, discomfort in the abdomen, bowel disorders in the form of constipation;
  • Allergic reactions to drug components;
  • Dizziness, drowsiness, lethargy or agitation, hallucinations, sleep disorders;
  • Slow heart rate, lower blood pressure;
  • Breathing problems.

Long-term and constant use of Corvalol can provoke addiction to phenobarbital, as a result of which the effectiveness as a sleeping pill will gradually decrease, and during withdrawal, withdrawal symptoms are possible - anxiety, agitation, hallucinations. It is known that after two weeks of taking Corvalol for sleep, the desired effect is no longer achieved.

An overdose of Corvalol is provoked by non-compliance with recommendations for dosage and duration of treatment. The accumulation of drug metabolites can cause not only addiction, but also serious disorders in the body upon withdrawal - depression of the central nervous system, hypotension, pulse and breathing disorders. In case of overdose with poisoning, the victim may require treatment in intensive care and detoxification therapy.

Corvalol goes well with most antihypertensives, antiarrhythmics, drugs for the treatment of diabetes and others that many older people have to take, but there are drugs that are better not to be taken at the same time - steroid hormones, contraceptives, sleeping pills, anticonvulsants, some antibiotics.

Corvalol and alcohol are not compatible and taking them at the same time is not a good idea. Ethanol enhances the adverse effects of phenobarbital and the toxicity of Corvalol in general, so you will have to choose between sedative drops or stress relief with a strong drink. Alcohol forms the basis of the drops, but the amount of it per dose is such that no harm will occur. It’s a different matter if you take drops and drink alcohol in volumes that do not fit into the “therapeutic” dose.

Corvalol lowers blood pressure, so people prone to hypotension should take it carefully. Drivers of motor vehicles and people employed in potentially hazardous jobs that require quick reactions and high concentration should not take Corvalol due to the presence of phenobarbital and alcohol in it, which slow down the reaction rate and cause drowsiness.

Can Corvalol be taken by pregnant women?

Many expectant mothers have difficulty falling asleep, are overly nervous and worried, and can become extremely emotionally labile due to hormonal fluctuations. In this regard, sedative drops may seem like a rather attractive method of treatment, however, in most instructions, pregnancy and lactation are among the contraindications. Corvalol is no exception; it is contraindicated during pregnancy, since phenobarbital can have a very adverse effect on the development of the baby.

Phenobarbital has a depressant effect on the nervous system of both mother and child, impairs blood clotting, causing bleeding in the first days of life in a newborn. Abuse of Corvalol in the third trimester of gestation causes addiction and subsequent withdrawal syndrome, which can be observed in the child in the development of seizures and severe excitability after childbirth or in the first two weeks of life.

Many will notice that phenobarbital is still prescribed to pregnant women suffering from convulsive syndrome or epilepsy, and Corvalol contains very little of it. This is true, but the need for anticonvulsant treatment is a much more compelling reason to use phenobarbital than to drink Corvalol containing it to calm the nerves. In addition, there are much safer and more effective sedatives that are not contraindicated for pregnant and lactating women.

***

Corvalol is one of the most accessible and cheapest sedatives, which does not lose popularity even with the emergence of a large number of other, more modern, medications for insomnia or anxiety. It is loved by both elderly patients with combined pathologies of internal organs, and young people suffering from panic attacks and various manifestations of neurosis.

When stocking up for future use and regularly replenishing your first aid kit with fresh vials of Corvalol, do not forget that this drug has a number of serious side effects and contraindications, so reading the instructions and consulting a doctor are integral steps when using Corvalol and any other medicine.

Should I use Valocordin if I have high blood pressure?

The antispasmodic and sedative effect of the drug on the human body can lead to a decrease in blood pressure, provided that hypertension:

  • caused by emotional experiences;
  • accompanied by minor changes in hemodynamic parameters;
  • triggered by a change in weather;
  • appeared as a result of physical overload.

If arterial hypertension is chronic, systolic and diastolic pressure are increased by more than 20 mm. Hg Art. from the normative values for a given person, the use of Valocordin will not lead to normalization of hemodynamic parameters.

Description and composition

The drug contains two active ingredients:

  1. Phenobabital. Long-acting bariturate. The sedative mechanism is based on the ability to influence the transmission of impulses in the brain. A side effect is the ability to depress breathing, which increases with increasing dose.
  2. Ethyl alpha-bromoisovalerate. Exhibits a sedative and antispasmodic effect, enhances the effect of phenobarbital.

Both substances exhibit a sedative effect, the strength of which depends on the dose taken. In large quantities, they can have a hypnotic effect and even a narcotic effect. Therefore, Valocordin should be taken only according to the recommendations of the attending physician and not in long courses. Periodic use facilitates the onset of natural sleep, reduces the excitability of the nervous system and exhibits a mild hypotensive effect.

In addition, Valocordin contains auxiliary components that enhance the main effect:

  1. Hop cones – enhance the sedative effect.
  2. Peppermint oil has a vasodilator and antispasmodic effect.
  3. Ethanol - enhances the inhibitory effect on the central nervous system.

The bromine atom in the valeric acid derivative is excreted from the body very slowly and in itself exhibits a sedative effect. Long-term use of Valocordin leads to the accumulation of bromine, chronic intoxication and changes in the functioning of the central nervous system.

For what diseases and symptoms is Valocordin prescribed?

Although drops are used for acute cardiac disorders, they do not treat the disease itself, but eliminate its symptoms. The main effect of the medicine is to alleviate the symptoms of the disease. Therefore, the medicine is prescribed only in addition to other, basic, drugs in complex therapy. As monotherapy, drops are prescribed to relatively healthy people who complain of insomnia or other conditions that do not require active drug treatment.

What does Valocordin help with, why is it prescribed:

Diseases and pathologies for which Valocordin is indicatedWhat symptoms does Valocordin effectively eliminate?
Angina pectorisInsomnia
Arterial hypertension, especially the initial stagesIrritability
Cardiac ischemiaExcessive excitability
Neuroses or neurosis-like conditionsConsequences of stress
Hypochondriacal syndrome (a state of constant exaggerated fear for one's health)Anxiety and fear
Functional disorders of the cardiovascular systemRapid heartbeat or other heart rhythm disturbances
Autonomic disorders of the nervous systemPainful sensations of varying intensity in the heart area
Biliary or intestinal colicSpasms of blood vessels and (or) muscles of the intestines or other organs of the digestive tract

Drug interactions

Medicine or poison?

Valocordin (analogue Corvalol) is sold completely freely in our country. In some countries, it can only be purchased with a doctor's prescription. There are countries where such medicine is completely prohibited for use.

The reason for this is the presence of phenobarbital in it. According to numerous clinical studies, this component can be addictive. The combination of phenobarbital with ethanol makes Valocordin harmful to health.

According to Western doctors, Valocordin does not contribute to recovery. At the same time, it can cause health problems. Therefore, it is prohibited to import Valocordin into EU countries. It should be noted that these drops have both benefits and harm, and there are conditions when drinking them is completely prohibited.

Despite everything, in our country it is almost a “folk medicine”, and it is also quite inexpensive. Some parents even give it to their children (!), which is completely unacceptable.

What effect does Valocordin have? This is a combined drug with a vasodilator, antispasmodic and slight hypnotic effect. In small doses, drops have a calming effect and help cope with sleep disorders.

The drops contain:

  1. Phenobarbital.
  2. Ethyl bromoisovalerate.
  3. Hop oil.
  4. Peppermint oil.
  5. Rectified alcohol.
  6. Purified water.

Analogues of the drug

Analogs of Valocordin are: Barboval, Darvipol, Valecard, Corvalol, Corvaldin, Corvaltab, Corvalcaps.

There are no complete analogues of Valocordin in composition; only approximate synonyms with the same active substances are distinguished. Substitutes include products with similar effects. Analogues of the drug:

  • Barboval – contains menthol in the air, available in drops and capsules;
  • Valecard - drops and tablets with a similar composition;
  • Corvalcaps - capsules with a high percentage of active ingredients;
  • Darvilol, Carditab, Corvalol, Corvaldin, Corvaltab, Morozov drops are inexpensive analogues of the product.

Many drugs have a composition almost identical to Valocordin. However, their cost is more expensive and their efficiency is higher. Valocordin can be replaced with an analogue drug only as prescribed by a doctor. Self-medication is unacceptable. Valocordin analogues:

  1. Corvalol. This medication is a structural analogue of Valocordin. It is produced in the Russian Federation. Its cost is lower. It has the same indications and contraindications for use as Valocordin. Produced in the form of drops (15, 25 and 50 ml), and tablet form.
  2. Korvaltab. Produced in tablets. The active ingredients are phenobarbital, ethyl bromoisovalerate and peppermint oil. The medicine is a sedative.
  3. Corvalcaps. Available in capsules for oral administration. This is a combined barbiturate that has a hypnotic and sedative effect.
  4. Diazepam. Has a sedative and hypnotic effect. It is anticonvulsant. This is a psychotropic medicine that depresses the nervous system. It belongs to the group of tranquilizers. Produced in tablet form.
  5. Barboval. The drug is a coronary dilation (vasodilator) drug. Has a calming effect on the central nervous system. The medicine lowers blood pressure and has antispasmodic properties. Available in the form of drops.

Valocordin is considered an effective medication with a good sedative and hypnotic effect.

However, when taking it, it is necessary to remember that the medicine contains components that, when taken for a long time, have a toxic effect on the patient’s body. The medicine should be used only as prescribed by a doctor. Self-medication is unacceptable.

Side effects

Even long-term use of Valocordin is usually well tolerated.

When taking Valocordin according to indications during the daytime, slight dizziness and drowsiness are sometimes observed.

However, long-term use of the medication in doses that exceed those recommended in the instructions may cause symptoms of bromine poisoning in the form of:

  • Apathy;
  • Depressive mood;
  • Conjunctivitis;
  • Rhinitis;
  • Impaired coordination of movements;
  • Hemorrhagic diathesis.

Side effects, even with long-term use of Valocordin, are rare. During the daytime, in some cases, slight dizziness and drowsiness may occur.

When taking large doses for a long time, chronic bromine poisoning is possible, which is manifested by apathy, depressive mood, conjunctivitis, rhinitis, impaired coordination of movements and hemorrhagic diathesis.

If you are hypersensitive to the components of the drops, allergic skin reactions may occur.

If unusual side effects occur that are not reflected in the instructions for Valocordin, it is recommended to report this to your doctor.

In most cases, Valocordin is normally tolerated by the human body. If the dosage of the drug is not observed, personal intolerance to the drug and other reasons, side effects may occur:

  1. Respiratory system: apnea (stopping respiratory movements), hypoventilation (lack of oxygen for tissues and organs).
  2. Digestive system: attacks of nausea, vomiting, constipation.
  3. Nervous system: mental disorders, agitation, anxiety, confusion, insomnia or drowsiness, ataxia (loss of coordination), hallucinations, nervousness, depression of central nervous system functions.
  4. Cardiovascular system: decreased blood pressure, bradycardia (slow heart rate), dizziness, fainting.
  5. Development of anemia (decrease in hemoglobin concentration) with long-term use of Valocordin. For the same reason, chronic bromine poisoning can occur with the following symptoms: apathy, hemorrhagic diathesis, impaired coordination of movements, rhinitis, depression, conjunctivitis.

Valocordin is well tolerated by patients even with long periods of therapy. In rare cases, when taken during the daytime, side effects such as slight dizziness and drowsiness may occur.

With long-term treatment and use of large doses of the drug, chronic bromine poisoning may occur, the symptoms of which are:

  • apathy,
  • depressed mood,
  • rhinitis,
  • impaired coordination of movements,
  • hemorrhagic diathesis,
  • conjunctivitis.
