Why do you need to douche?

Therapeutic and prophylactic douching is the process of irrigating the vaginal walls with special solutions. Antiseptic and antibacterial drugs dissolved in water, decoctions of medicinal herbs, as well as solutions with alkaline and acidic pH can be used as a basis for irrigation. In gynecological practice, vaginal douching is a therapeutic and prophylactic manipulation that helps fight infectious and inflammatory lesions of the genital tract of a bacterial, fungal and viral nature.

Very often, this manipulation is prescribed to women as part of complex therapy, combining it with the installation of vaginal tampons, the use of suppositories, tablets and baths. The active components of the solutions used, when administered, are distributed throughout the vaginal mucosa and have a therapeutic effect. In addition, the introduced liquid media effectively wash out pathogenic microorganisms and their decay products in the presence of an infectious-inflammatory process. The simplicity of this manipulation allows you to do vaginal douching at home yourself, guided by the instructions of your doctor.

What can you douche with?

In preparing the solution for douching, active chemical components are used - salt or soda, boric acid, potassium permanganate. It is also carried out with medications and solutions specially prescribed by the doctor, depending on the symptoms and nature of the disease. Natural ingredients are often used and prepared immediately before the procedure.

Folk remedies

Traditional healers advise douching with several medicinal herbs, which include aloe and chamomile. Antibacterial herbal teas are often used and brewed before the procedure. Also, the simplest remedy is baking soda or salt.

Baking soda

Soda is diluted in water in the following proportions: a teaspoon of soda per 500 ml of warm water. The solution helps fight itching and eliminates inflammation. Salt diluted in water has the same effect. You can use it no more than one course once a month, that is, 5-7 days of treatment, after which a break for at least a month.

Honey

Honey is also often used, to which a little boric acid is added. The spectrum of action of this remedy is quite wide: it treats trichomonas colpitis, vaginitis and vaginosis, chlamydia, thrush, gonorrhea and even reduces erosion. Take 5 tablespoons of honey and 5 tablespoons of boric alcohol, which are diluted in 1 liter of warm water.

Aloe

A solution with aloe helps get rid of itching, ulcers and other inflammations, restores microflora. To prepare the solution, you need to choose a fresh aloe leaf that is at least 2 years old. Its juice is squeezed out and mixed in a ratio of 1 to 10.

Chamomile

Chamomile is one of those plants that are used very widely. It is safe and has a wide spectrum of action. A tablespoon of flowers is brewed in 2 glasses of water, cooled and douched.

Herbal collection

This collection helps to get rid of any female diseases. It necessarily includes lavender, chamomile, calendula, elm bark, cudweed, lovage and raspberry leaves. You can make everything yourself, taking herbs in equal quantities, or buy a ready-made mixture. Brew in a ratio of 2 tablespoons to 1 sheet of water.

Pharmacy drugs

Modern medicine also offers a large arsenal of tools to help fight any ailment. You can use both simple antiseptics and specialized products (necessarily after consultation with a doctor).

"Chlorhexidine"

The drug has a broad effect and is used against fungi and many bacteria. The dosage is prescribed by the doctor after examination. In case of overdose, vaginosis may develop. You can buy it at any pharmacy. It is sold in plastic bottles with a special dispenser spout.

"ASD"

Douching with the drug is carried out for fibroids, cancer, sexually transmitted diseases and inflammatory processes. It is often used as a means to improve the functions of the genital organs, in the fight against cystic manifestations. Douching is carried out as follows: 35 drops of the product are diluted in 0.5 liters of warm water.

"Citeal"

The medicine contains chlorhexidine, hexamidine and chlorocresol. It is used for thrush, cervitis, vulvitis and other diseases. The drug is diluted in a ratio of 1 to 10 with warm water.

"Dekasan"

Helps in the treatment of fungal infections, purulent processes, bacterial infections. The product is diluted with water in a ratio of 1 to 10 or 1 to 5.

"Furacilin"

This remedy does not help in the fight against fungal infections, but relieves discomfort, reduces burning and itching. It is necessary to dilute 1 tablet, after crushing it, in 200 ml of water.

Advantages and disadvantages of vaginal douching

Self-irrigation of the vagina with medicinal or antiseptic solutions has a short list of advantages, among which are:

  1. The possibility of carrying out antiseptic treatment of the vaginal lumen in the presence of an infectious inflammatory process.
  2. Uniform distribution of the active components of the douching solution over the surface of the vaginal mucosa.
  3. This procedure can be used to cleanse the vaginal lumen of drug residues in the form of suppositories and vaginal tablets, as well as as an additional means of protection against unplanned pregnancy if you have previously had sexual intercourse without using a condom.

On the other hand, vaginal douching is not always appropriate, since this procedure can help cleanse the mucous membrane not only of pathogens, but also of bacteria that form the normal microflora of the vagina. This circumstance can result in the development of dysbiosis and its complications such as bacterial vaginitis, candidiasis and vaginosis.

The benefits of douching

Women have been treated with this method since ancient times. There are many folk recipes for preparing the composition for this procedure. As a rule, they were passed down from generation to generation. However, many people forget or do not know about this effective method of treating thrush and wonder what douching is like? Photos of various devices for carrying out the procedure prove that in the modern world this measure is no less popular than other treatment methods.

Many women suffering from thrush successfully get rid of this trouble by douching with a soda solution, since soda kills the fungus. In addition, thanks to douching, the chance of conceiving a child increases. This happens because a favorable environment is created in the vagina.

Devices used for douching at home

Before you do douching yourself at home, you can use various devices that help irrigate the vaginal walls with one or another solution. When performing this therapeutic and prophylactic manipulation, an Esmarch mug or a rubber syringe can be used, which is also used for performing cleansing and therapeutic enemas.

From the point of view of convenience, preference is given to douching, since douching with an Esmarch mug requires additional conditions. Regardless of which device is used, irrigation of the vaginal walls can be carried out not in a horizontal position, above the toilet or above another container. If it is necessary to administer a small volume of solution, douching can be done with a regular syringe at home.

Method of using the syringe

A syringe is a rubber bulb with a special tip. Before use, it must be disinfected by disconnecting the tip and the container. Disinfection of the cylinder is carried out by boiling for 10 minutes. in distilled water, and the tip by immersion in a solution of hydrogen peroxide. In medical institutions, the syringe is disinfected by complete immersion in hydrogen peroxide or chloramine in accordance with the available regulatory and technical documentation. Then the syringe is washed under running water and collected. To do this, the tip is inserted into the hole of the cylinder. Immediately before use, lubricate the tip with Vaseline or any neutral fat. The contact time of the syringe with the drug should not exceed 30 minutes. After the procedure, the syringe is washed with hot water and dried.

Douching solutions

Depending on the purpose of using this procedure and the presence and nature of discharge from the genital tract, different types of solutions containing chemical and medicinal components, as well as infusions of medicinal herbs, can be used. To irrigate the vaginal walls for therapeutic and prophylactic purposes, the following solutions of medications can be used:

  1. Chlorhexidine. This remedy is widely used in medical practice, as it has pronounced antiseptic properties. Douching with a solution of chlorhexidine at home is often prescribed to women for the purpose of sanitizing the genital tract after unprotected intercourse, provided that there is a risk of infection with sexually transmitted diseases. To irrigate the vaginal mucosa, a Chlorhexidine solution with a concentration of the active ingredient of no more than 0.2% is used. In pharmacy departments you can purchase an antiseptic solution with a concentration of the active ingredient of 0.05%. This solution is ideal for irrigating the mucous membrane of the genital tract. This remedy is effective for the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases such as gonorrhea, syphilis, ureaplasmosis, chlamydia, trichomoniasis and genital herpes.
  2. Furacilin. The active component of this drug is nitrofuran, which has a wide spectrum of antimicrobial activity. Douching with a solution of furatsilin in gynecology is prescribed if there is a need to sanitize the genital tract, as well as to reduce the intensity of the inflammatory process in infectious and inflammatory diseases of the reproductive system. Irrigation of the genital tract is performed with a solution made by dissolving 1 tablet of the drug in 100 ml of warm purified water.
  3. Hydrogen peroxide. Another common method of antiseptic treatment of the genital tract is douching with a solution of hydrogen peroxide. For irrigation, a 1% concentration is used, which can be obtained by mixing 100 ml of a 3% product and 300 ml of warm purified water. It is recommended to heat the finished product to a temperature of 37-38 degrees before administration.

In addition, douching with sea salt is often used to treat a female disease such as candidiasis. This condition is characterized by a fungal infection of the mucous membrane of the genital tract, with the appearance of discharge from the genital tract with a cheesy consistency. To enhance the therapeutic effect, sea salt is combined with baking soda.

To prepare the product, dissolve 1-2 teaspoons of salt and the same amount of baking soda powder in 1 liter of purified warm water. There should be no fragments of undissolved soda or salt in the finished liquid.

For therapeutic and prophylactic purposes, infusions and decoctions of medicinal herbs are also used, which in pure or diluted form are used to irrigate the walls of the vagina. For example, douching with chamomile decoction at home is used to treat diseases such as bacterial vaginitis and candidiasis, as well as as part of complex therapy for sexually transmitted infections.

To enhance the therapeutic effect, a combined decoction is prepared from oak bark, eucalyptus, chamomile flowers, knotweed and nettle. The listed ingredients are mixed in equal proportions (1 teaspoon each), pour 1 liter of clean water and keep in a water bath for 15 minutes. The finished product is filtered, cooled to a temperature of 37 degrees and used for douching.

Douching with chamomile in gynecology

The medicinal properties of this plant have been used in gynecology for several centuries. It is not without reason that it is called Matricaria, or mother herb.

When using chamomile infusions for various inflammatory and infectious diseases, you can achieve greater treatment effect.

Gently affecting the female genital organs, the decoction has a calming and anti-inflammatory effect, relieves burning and itching and eliminates discomfort.

The value of the plant lies in the fact that it contains many useful substances:

  • essential oils;
  • flavonoids, which have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects, and also have a positive effect on capillaries;
  • ascorbic acid, which is a powerful antioxidant and is involved in many vital processes of the female body;
  • various organic acids and polysaccharides;
  • tannins.

Douching is a process in which a woman’s vagina is washed and irrigated with various medicinal solutions, including chamomile infusion, using a rubber bulb.

Doctors prescribe this procedure for several indications. Thus, douching with chamomile for thrush (candidiasis) gives a positive effect after just a few days. In addition, this remedy is used in the complex treatment of cervical erosion, menstrual irregularities, and inflammation of the bladder.

However, despite the fact that in most cases the procedure brings a positive effect, there are some contraindications for its use:

  • pregnancy in any trimester;
  • menstruation;
  • age over 40 years;
  • endometriosis of the uterus;
  • in the first month after gynecological interventions (abortions, operations) or childbirth;
  • with a tendency to allergic reactions.

Therefore, self-medication with chamomile infusions is unacceptable; this procedure should be prescribed by a doctor.

How to do douching at home?

In order to douche correctly at home, you need to familiarize yourself with the recommendations for performing this manipulation, since failure to follow the basic rules can result in the development of serious complications.

If the procedure for irrigation of the vaginal mucosa is performed in a doctor’s office, then an Esmarch mug is often used. The temperature of the finished solution is from 34 to 38 degrees. The patient is seated on a gynecological chair, a bedpan is placed under the pelvis, and the lower limbs should be spread apart and bent at the knees. Next, the tip of the hose is carefully inserted into the vaginal lumen and the solution is injected. At home, a gynecological rubber bulb for douching is more often used, which can be purchased at the pharmacy.

Important! To obtain the finished solution, it is strictly forbidden to use untreated tap water. The basis for vaginal irrigation should be filtered or boiled water, cooled to the required temperature.

Before starting the procedure, you should toilet the external genitalia, and also thoroughly wash the tip of the syringe and pour boiling water over it. The irrigation procedure can be performed while lying on your back in a bathtub with the lower limbs apart and positioned on the side walls of the bathtub. When using an Esmarch mug, the douching device should be held at a height of 75-100 cm above the level of the hips. Before inserting the tip of the hose into the vagina, a woman should carefully open the valve of the device and bleed air from the reservoir, preventing it from entering the lumen of the genital tract. After the air comes out, the tap should be closed, the tip should be carefully inserted into the vaginal lumen and the tap should be opened slightly to inject the solution.

When introducing a portion of the solution, it is recommended to squeeze the vaginal muscles for a few seconds, thereby retaining the solution inside. After completing the procedure, it is recommended to remain in a horizontal position for 15 minutes, then perform toileting of the external genitalia and put on clean underwear. Compared to an Esmarch mug, douching at home with a rubber bulb is much easier, but it is important to maintain the intensity of the liquid pressure in order to prevent vaginal contents from being thrown into the uterine cavity. You can use a rubber syringe only after first consulting a doctor.

Douching as a method of contraception

Despite the popularity of the technique of douching with water after intercourse with the addition of table vinegar or lemon juice, injecting liquid into the genital tract is not a reliable method of contraception.

In order to avoid unplanned conception after an unprotected act, it is recommended to use pharmacy postcoital contraceptives in tablet dosage form, and douching does not adequately protect against unwanted pregnancy . Any experiments with acidic or alkaline solutions can lead to burns of the vaginal mucosa.

Features of vaginal douching

The procedure for irrigation of the vaginal mucosa is always accompanied by a certain risk of reflux of liquid contents into the cervical canal and the uterus itself, with the subsequent development of an infectious and inflammatory process. That is why douching is strictly contraindicated for pregnant women, regardless of gestational age.

If candidiasis or other infectious lesions of the genital tract develop during pregnancy, the expectant mother is recommended to consult a gynecologist and undergo safe drug therapy.

During menstruation

During the period of menstrual flow, there is an expansion of the lumen of the cervical canal, resulting in an increased risk of infection in the uterine cavity with the subsequent development of acute endometritis or salpingitis. That is why douching with solutions during menstruation is prohibited.

For virgins

This procedure can be performed on virgins with the development of vulvovaginitis, but irrigation can only be performed by the attending gynecologist using a special thin catheter.

For therapeutic purposes, a solution of potassium permanganate is used, and the depth of insertion of the catheter is no more than 3 cm. Douching on their own is contraindicated for virgins.

Contraindications

Gynecologists note that any douching composition threatens disruption in the natural microflora of the vagina. Therefore, turning this manipulation into an everyday hygiene ritual is unacceptable. It is especially harmful to douche on menstruation days. By self-medicating and carrying out the procedure during pregnancy, in the first weeks after childbirth or abortion, during acute inflammatory diseases and in some other cases, women cause significant harm to their well-being and health.

In addition, for women after 40 years of age, douching is conditionally permitted and can only be carried out with the permission of the attending physician.

Important! If any unpleasant sensations in the vagina, pain or itching occur, as well as unusual discharge, the manipulation should be stopped immediately and notified to the doctor.

Contraindications and side effects

The main contraindications for performing this therapeutic and prophylactic manipulation include:

  • period of bearing a child;
  • menses;
  • in the presence of specific discharge from the genital tract until its nature is established;
  • in the first 10 days after an abortion;
  • in the presence of bloody discharge from the genital tract of unknown etiology;
  • for oncology of the reproductive system or bladder.

Frequent irrigation of the mucous membrane of the genital tract is fraught with the development of such complications:

  • vaginal dysbiosis;
  • endometriosis;
  • endometritis;
  • bacterial vaginitis;
  • salpingitis.

Gynecological douche - a useful device

The material from which syringes were previously made in Russia was rubber. The development of the chemical industry has led to the replacement of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which is increasingly used in the production of medical devices. Its advantages: no pronounced odor, plastic, does not absorb poured liquids or their smell.

Differences from usual

There are several shapes, types and sizes of gynecological douches. All consist of two parts: a pear (resembles a fruit, hence the name) and an elongated plastic tip. When choosing, make sure that the tip is smooth, without roughness. A series of holes are made on both sides.

The main differences between the gynecological one and the usual one: a soft and elastic polypropylene tip with a curved shape. This feature reduces the irritating effect on the vaginal walls.

Price

The price depends on the volume of the pear (50-500 ml) and the material used to make the device. A small, 220 ml Russian-made BI No. 8 with a hard tip will cost an average of 60 rubles. BI No. 9, 320 ml – 300 rub. With a soft tip and a volume of 310 ml you can buy an average of 360 rubles.

What kind of syringe should it be?

The gynecological douche looks like a baby pear. It consists of a round rubber pear-shaped container and a tip. When purchasing this product, you should pay attention to the quality of the material from which the pear is made. It should be dense and not have a pronounced rubbery smell. The best containers are sold from polyurethane. Such pears are plastic and do not have a medical or any other technical smell. When pouring liquids into them during use, the latter do not eat into the walls of the pear.

The tip itself should be made of hard plastic and also not have a strong odor. The shape should be elongated, smooth, without sharp corners and roughness. There should be a row of small round holes on both sides of the tip.

The syringe is collected before use. Before this, all its components should be stored in a box or clean plastic bag. It is very important that the gynecological douche is always clean and ready for use. After using it, the pear should be washed in a soapy solution to remove any remaining medication. Then rinse in clean running water and dry in the open air. The tip should be soaked for an hour and a half in a solution of potassium permanganate or hydrogen peroxide. This way the syringe will not only be cleaned, but also disinfected.

Rules for douching

As has already become clear, suitable herbal or medicinal solutions can be used for douching. The procedure itself requires the use of a regular Esmarch mug with a plastic tip. It is better if it is equipped with a special extension - this will help to do douching during pregnancy or if you are overweight, when a large belly physically prevents you from taking the position necessary for the procedure. You can purchase a special syringe.

The remaining rules for douching include the following facts:

  1. The prepared solution must have body temperature - this factor is mandatory, because otherwise it can seriously harm the microflora and vaginal walls.
  2. It is forbidden to press on the Esmarch mug or a special syringe - this will provoke a flow of water under pressure, which can enter the uterine cavity and provoke serious inflammatory processes.
  3. The tip of the syringe or Esmarch mug must be sterilized before each procedure - the tip is placed in boiling water for 2-3 minutes, used as it cools. The tip can also be sterilized by thoroughly wiping it with alcohol - it is important to penetrate into the cavity.
  4. Esmarch's syringe or mug must not be used in the future for routine enemas.
  5. Instruments for douching are hygienic products, so they are prohibited from being shared with other people.
  6. Proper douching means leaving the douche in the vaginal cavity for at least 15 minutes.
  7. Do not wash the vagina for several days in a row. The maximum number of treatment days is 7-10, depending on the intensity of the solution.

Violation of the rules for douching often provokes the development of serious diseases of the genitourinary system or their exacerbation. Penetration of the solution into the uterine cavity leads to an inflammatory process, possible uterine bleeding, the formation of ulcers and other troubles. There are cases where improperly performed douching caused surgery to remove the uterus or part of it.
