Laxative folk remedies: recipes for adults and children

In what cases should you use a laxative and what can you use to make a good laxative at home?

A laxative is a drug or prescription that will help cope with constipation of any complexity and nature. As a rule, this is a food with a “laxative” property or a drink. In some cases, oil, which is also drunk and facilitates the passage of feces through the intestines. “Home” recipes are gentle, sometimes they are quick and effective, sometimes not.

IMPORTANT: In any case, the effectiveness of a homemade laxative depends on how clogged the intestines were and how long it has been since you went to the toilet.

In what cases is it permissible to take “homemade” laxatives:

  • Constipation in children. In order not to “stuff” the child’s body with synthetic drugs, you can try to improve the baby’s bowel movements using mild laxative recipes. The child will defecate easily and will not experience discomfort.
  • Constipation in older people. The “aged” gut experiences many changes with age, including the loss of its natural functions. Intestinal peristalsis worsens, the microflora “weakens”. A proper diet and the inclusion of laxative recipes in it will help you not experience difficulties and have bowel movements regularly.
  • Constipation in pregnant women. Pregnant women may find it difficult to go to the toilet as the fetus develops and puts pressure on the intestines. Many drugs are simply not allowed for pregnant women, and the only sure way to improve stool is to improve nutrition and take safe homemade laxative recipes.
  • Acute constipation. They happen when a person eats something that disrupts or “slows down” his digestion process (so-called “fastening” foods: bread, pastry, rice, potatoes, black tea, chocolate and others). The right “homemade” laxative recipes will eliminate temporary constipation.
  • Chronic constipation. Some people, due to the fact that their intestines initially suffer from impaired function, regularly suffer from constipation. In order not to take laxatives every day (this can only worsen the situation), you need to use “homemade” recipes and the stool will be constant.
  • Prevention of constipation. If you are afraid that constipation may harm you or you have been eating unhealthy foods for a long time, you should regularly prevent constipation using home remedies.
  • If you do not want to take pharmaceutical laxatives. In order not to harm yourself and not to provoke “addiction” to synthetic laxatives, you can improve your bowel movements with “homemade” recipes.
  • To cleanse the body. Cleansing the intestines will help you speed up metabolic processes in the body, improve the absorption of nutrients from food, restore “good” microflora and even help you lose weight.
  • To restore intestinal microflora. It is the intestinal microflora that is responsible for a good digestive process, regular bowel movements and strong human immunity.

Symptoms and signs

Before talking about constipation as such, parents should know about the existing medical standards for bowel movements in children of different ages . Newborn babies go to the toilet quite often, sometimes after every feeding; up to 12 bowel movements per day are considered normal. This applies to babies who are breastfed; bottle-fed babies go to the toilet less often; they may be constipated if the baby has not had a bowel movement for a day.

Children under 1 year old walk 1-3 times a day, and babies from one to 2 years old - 1-2 times every 1-2 days. After two years, children have fully formed stools, their feces are formed, and they can go to the toilet once every 1-2 days. Defecation that occurs less than the specified norms may well indicate constipation.

The main symptoms of constipation are:

  • Lack of stool.
  • There may be pain and discomfort in the abdomen.
  • Decreased appetite.
  • Headache, signs of general intoxication of the body.
  • Bloating and increased gas formation.

There can be a great many reasons for childhood constipation, because the baby’s digestive system is still imperfect. Most often, a child cannot go to the toilet normally due to an imbalance in his own diet or the mother’s menu if he is fed breast milk. Constipation often occurs in children who drink little fluid, who are suddenly introduced to complementary foods or a new product, as well as in children who are experiencing severe stress or are in a state of psychological discomfort.

How to make a laxative at home for constipation from dried fruits and hay: recipe

Any dried fruit has the same properties as fresh fruit. They contain about 20-22% moisture, as well as all the useful trace elements and nutrients of fresh fruits. They differ in that they still contain more sugar and calories. The benefits of dried fruits in the treatment of constipation are also due to their rich fiber content, which facilitates the passage of stool in the intestines.

Dried fruits for constipation:

  • Raisin. Seedless varieties are high in sugar and fiber. It can be eaten dry, steamed, added to compote and other dishes. In addition, it contains a lot of B vitamins, which improves metabolism in the body and normalizes the digestive process.
  • Prunes. It is obtained from plums, which are famous for their laxative effects. Prunes contain a lot of fiber, and it not only stimulates peristalsis, but also “envelops” the feces for their easy movement. Prunes can be added to fermented milk products, made into compote, steamed and eaten dry.
  • Dried apricots. It is obtained from apricot, a fruit also known for its strong laxative properties. It is interesting that there are much more vitamins and minerals in dried apricots than in fresh fruits. It contains a lot of fiber and therefore, if you eat it regularly, you can completely eliminate the problem of constipation. Add dried apricots to tea, cottage cheese, yogurt, and make compote from it.
  • Figs This dried fruit, compared to others, has a large supply of pectin. It is eaten dried or steamed. Its laxative effect is comparable to prunes. Be careful, if you eat dried figs in excessive quantities, you may get “diarrhea.”
  • Senna. The leaves of this plant have a huge concentration of organic acids, which are incredibly useful for relieving constipation. At the moment, senna is the world's most powerful herbal laxative.

Benefits of Natural Laxatives

If constipation is not a consequence of another disease and is not protracted, it is better to use folk laxatives instead of chemical laxatives. Many of them are as effective as medications, but do not harm the intestines and do not cause the death of beneficial bacteria involved in digestion. Natural laxatives, as a rule, have a complex effect on the functions of the gastrointestinal tract, providing a gentle, gradual solution to the problem at home. The main advantages of natural remedies :

  • smooth achievement of a positive result without harm to the intestinal microflora;
  • complex effect (folk laxatives ensure normalization of metabolism throughout the body);
  • accessibility (compared to expensive synthetic drugs, natural laxatives are always cheaper);
  • safety (folk recipes almost never cause side effects, they are approved for use even by pregnant women or children, but only after consulting a doctor).

Brewing teas and infusions of certain types of herbs can help relieve constipation as they have a mild laxative effect. • Aloe – fresh aloe juice or gel should be drunk 1 or 2 times a day for the product to have a laxative effect.
  • Agave - it should also be squeezed to get juice. Drink pure agave juice or mix it with natural honey 1 or 2 times a day.
  • Kelp – has a large amount of fiber, which stimulates the rapid process of digestion and trouble-free bowel movements. It can be eaten as a pickled salad, brewed as a decoction of dry kelp, or added to preparations.
  • Horse sorrel – a bunch of sorrel should be washed and chopped, brewed with boiling water and allowed to brew for a while, then consumed.
  • Field steelhead - a concentrated decoction of the plant has not only a laxative, but also an anti-inflammatory effect on the intestines.

Folk remedies

Vegetable and fruit juices

Carrot, cabbage and peach juice are especially effective. They should be without preservatives; the ideal option is to squeeze them yourself. You can take juices several times a day.

Vaseline oil

This remedy can be used for chronic constipation with severe symptoms. Before going to bed, you can give your child 1-2 teaspoons; in the morning he should go to the toilet. This method is not suitable for children under one year old.

Flax seeds

From them you can prepare a not very beautiful, but very effective laxative. To do this, pour a teaspoon of seeds into half a glass of boiling water and leave for a quarter of an hour. The result is a substance that is very reminiscent of mucus, which is what you should give your child half a teaspoon before each meal.

Dill water

This remedy helps not only with infant colic, but also with constipation and increased gas formation. You can buy a ready-made mixture at the pharmacy for dilution with water, or you can prepare the product yourself. You will need dill seeds in the amount of two teaspoons and one glass of boiling water. If there are no seeds, you can use dill, but its effectiveness is somewhat lower. The herb needs to be thrown into boiling water and cooked for 5 minutes. Then strain, cool and give to the child to drink before meals.

Chamomile

From pharmaceutical chamomile you can prepare a remedy that will alleviate the child’s condition with infrequent and relatively mild constipation. You will need a tablespoon of dry collection and two glasses of hot water. The broth should be kept in a water bath for five minutes, and then cooled and strained. Take a quarter glass three times a day before meals. The given dose is optimal for a child who is already 3 years old. Those younger are given a tablespoon four times a day.

Oat grains (150 g) should be poured with boiling water (250 ml) and left in a thermos overnight. The resulting oat milk is given in the morning, after waking up on an empty stomach. Typically, the laxative effect of consumption occurs within 4-5 hours after administration. This remedy should not be given to children under 2 years of age.

  • Prunes should be scalded with boiling water to wash off dirt and dust from them (you can leave them in boiling water for a few minutes and drain the “first” water).
  • After this, the prunes are steamed a second time and kept for about 30 minutes so that the fruits become softer.
  • After this, place the fruits in a blender bowl and add 1 tsp. vegetable oil, as well as a little sugar (for example, if children are disdainful of taste and love sweets).
  • The finished puree should be consumed together with or after each meal.

IMPORTANT: If the child refuses to eat puree, you can cook prune compote with sugar. So, finely chopped prunes can be added to yogurt and curd masses.

Folk remedies for the treatment of constipation in newborns

There are different folk ways to get rid of constipation.

  1. Sterilized vegetable oil. Some mothers use it before problems arise, for prevention. However, vegetable oil will help cope with constipation that has already appeared in the baby. If the mother is breastfeeding, you can lubricate the nipples with sterilized vegetable oil before feeding. If the baby is bottle-fed, a few drops of oil should be placed on his tongue before eating. Usually it is enough to do this several times in a row. For prevention, oil is added once a day before the first morning feeding. To prepare sterilized oil, you need to take any vegetable oil and sterilize it in a water bath for about half an hour.
  2. An old proven folk remedy is dill water. Dill water is prepared in some pharmacies. But you can cook it at home. To do this you will need a teaspoon of dill seeds and a glass of water. Add dill seeds to boiling water and boil them under a closed lid for 2-3 minutes. After this, the broth must be removed from the heat and allowed to cool, then strain. Dill water can also be prepared from dill (2-3 sprigs of the plant per half a glass of water). For babies from 3 months, dill water is made more saturated - 2 teaspoons of seeds per glass of water. Newborns are given 1-2 teaspoons of dill water before and after feeding, and children from 3 months - 1-3 spoons. A six-month-old baby can be given a quarter glass of the product.
  3. Frequently recurring constipation is treated with infusions of chamomile. The infusion is prepared in the following proportion: 1 teaspoon of dried flowers to 2 cups of boiling water. Chamomile is poured with boiling water and left for about 30 minutes. It is very important to strain the infusion thoroughly so that even the smallest particles are removed. Otherwise, the baby may choke. Give the infusion to the baby 5-6 times a day, a teaspoon.
  4. An excellent folk remedy for constipation is natural honey. Honey is a mild natural laxative. But due to its high allergenicity, it should be given to children with caution. If you are sure that your baby is not at risk of an allergy to honey, you can give him this beekeeping product drop by drop. Some mothers dip the pacifier in honey and give it to the baby. Honey also has calming properties.

How to make a laxative from soda: recipe

Soda helps cope with many problems in the intestines that can cause constipation:

  • Increased gas formation
  • Violation of water-alkaline balance
  • Excessively “hard” stool

Mix these two ingredients (inject gas from the mineral water and heat it a little until warm). Use low-percentage kefir (0.5-1%) and drink this drink (1-2 glasses) at night so that the effect occurs after 10-12 hours in the morning.

Drug treatment

If a child constantly has difficulty bowel movements, the help of a qualified doctor is necessary. The specialist prescribes tests and prescribes medications based on the results.

  2. Prokinetics and antispasmodics. Remedies necessary to eliminate sluggish functioning of the digestive tract and relieve spasms. Promote increased peristalsis of the walls of the stomach and intestines. Relieves pain and reduces gas.
  3. Choleretic preparations based on herbal components. Medicines help children who are prone to constipation. They restore reserves of digestive juice, increase the production of bile and pancreatic secretions. Food is better absorbed by the child’s body and unprocessed waste is eliminated faster.

Additionally, doctors prescribe bifidobacteria and lactobacilli to patients.
