Arbidol: instructions, indications, contraindications, information on effectiveness

Instructions for use and dosage

The suspension is taken before meals.
To prepare the medicine, add about 30 ml of water to the powder or fill the bottle with water to 2/3 of its volume. The water to prepare the solution should be brought to a boil and then cooled. It should be at room temperature when mixed with the powder. After pouring water inside and closing the bottle with a lid, you need to turn the bottle over and then shake it thoroughly several times so that the medicine becomes homogeneous. After adding more boiled water inside the bottle to the mark, which corresponds to 100 ml of liquid, the bottle is closed again and shaken again. Thorough shaking of the suspension is required before each dose of the drug so that the syrup taken is homogeneous. For dosing, it is recommended to use the measuring spoon that the manufacturer provides with the bottle.

A single dosage for a child is determined depending on his age:

  • Children 2-6 years old are given 10 ml of medication per dose, which corresponds to 50 mg of umifenovir.
  • A child aged six to 12 years requires 100 mg of the active substance per dose, so he is given 20 ml of suspension.
  • A child over 12 years old should drink 40 ml of the drug, that is, at one time he will receive 200 mg of umifenovir. Since at this age you need to immediately swallow 8 scoops of the medicine, it is better to switch to taking solid forms with a higher dosage.

The regimen for taking the suspension depends on the purpose for which the medicine is taken:

  • If the drug is prescribed for prevention during the ARVI epidemic season, it should be given to the child for 3 weeks, twice a day.
  • If the baby has been in contact with a person who has the flu or another acute respiratory viral infection, the suspension is prescribed for a course of 10-14 days. In this case, the drug should be taken only once a day.
  • For influenza or other viral respiratory tract infections, if there are no complications, the medicine is taken every six hours. This four-time dose is prescribed for 5 days.
  • When infected with rotavirus, a child over 2 years of age is also given the drug four times a day for five days.
  • In order to prevent SARS syndrome in a child over 6 years of age, the suspension is given once a day for a course of 12 to 14 days. To treat such an acute pathology in a child over 12 years of age, a double dose of Arbidol is prescribed, and the duration of therapy is from 8 to 10 days.

If a child misses a dose of medication, the missed dose of suspension should be taken as soon as it was discovered. Further treatment is continued according to the regimen prescribed by the doctor.

Mode of application

The instructions for use provide comprehensive information about the dosage of this drug. During periods of high risk of contracting acute respiratory infections caused by the penetration of viruses into the body, Arbidol can be taken for preventive purposes. This event is especially important during cold weather, in autumn and spring, when central heating begins to work, drying out the mucous membranes of a person and making him susceptible to viral influence. In addition, at this time of year, people are more likely to be indoors, where the likelihood of infection is very high.

For preventive purposes, adults, as well as adolescents, starting from 12 years old, can drink Arbidol twice a week, 200 mg. The duration of therapy should not exceed 21 days.

When a person has had contact with an already sick person, he should drink Arbidol for two weeks. The dosage is equal to one capsule (tablet) with a volume of 200 mg. The sooner such therapy is started, the greater the likelihood of avoiding the development of a viral infection.

For the treatment of influenza and other viral infections that occur with moderate or mild severity, without the development of complications, the medicine should be taken 4 times a day, 200 mg. The course of such therapy should continue for five days.

The drug dosage regimen for adults in case of unpleasant bacterial complications such as bronchitis, pneumonia, sinusitis, Arbidol should be taken for a month. For the first five days, the drug (at a dosage of 200 mg) is taken 4 times a day, and for subsequent weeks - 1 tablet per day.

For the treatment of severe acute respiratory syndrome, the drug is taken twice a day, with equal time intervals. The dosage of the drug is 200 mg, and the duration of therapy is 8-10 days.

To get rid of chronic bronchitis and herpetic infections, the drug is used as part of complex therapy. The dosage of the drug should be 200 mg, taken 4 times throughout the day. This regimen is followed for 5-7 days, then the drug is taken twice a day for a week. The course should last for 28 days.

To combat rotavirus, Arbidol is taken for 5 days, four times a day, with a dosage of 200 mg tablets.

Prophylactic use

What does Arbidol help with if it is used for preventive purposes? The instructions for use allow such use. It is allowed for adults and children from two years of age. The medication is prescribed to avoid complications with an existing viral pathology. It has been proven that using the drug reduces the likelihood of pneumonia and bronchitis by 90%.

The drug is used as a prophylaxis and to avoid viral infection. If you are going to come into contact with a sick person, then Arbidol will help protect against infection. The product is effective during epidemics, colds and cold weather. It is used in winter and autumn, when the likelihood of disease increases. The medicine is also prescribed to normalize the immune status. As a preventative measure, Arbidol is used in surgery: it is prescribed before and after surgery.

Pills

When treating the disease, from 12 years of age you should take four 200 mg tablets per day. It is better to take the medicine 30 minutes before meals. For prevention, you need to take one tablet a day before meals. Children aged 6 to 12 should take 100 mg four times a day for treatment. For preventive purposes, take one 100 mg tablet daily. Children over 3 years old are recommended to take half a 100 mg tablet four times a day, and for the prevention of viral diseases - half a tablet per day.

Capsules

Persons over 12 years of age are allowed to take no more than 2 capsules of 100 mg or 4 pieces of 50 mg at a time. Children aged 6 to 12 – 1 capsule of 100 mg or 2 pieces of 50 mg, from 3 to 6 years – 1 piece of 50 mg. The dosage of the drug in capsules does not differ from the dosage of the drug in tablet form, that is, the dosage regimen is the same.

Suspension

To prepare the syrup, you need to pour about 30 ml of boiled water at room temperature into a bottle of powder, close the lid and shake it thoroughly until a homogeneous mixture is obtained. Then add another 100 milliliters of water and stir. Before use, it is better to shake the bottle so that the suspension becomes homogeneous. The finished syrup can be stored in the refrigerator for no more than 10 days. Dosage is made easier thanks to the included measuring spoon.

For ages 2 to 6 years, a single dose is 10 ml; for ages 6–12, it is 20 ml. For adults and children over 12 years of age, the maximum dose is 40 ml. When treating diseases, it is necessary to take the maximum single dose of the medicine 4 times a day. For prevention - maximum dose 2 times a week. The drug is taken 30 minutes after a meal and washed down with a small amount of boiled water.

If the drug is taken for the purpose of prevention in case of contact with a carrier of a viral disease, then it is better to adhere to a single daily dose of the drug for 2 weeks. During a surge in epidemics of viral infections, you should use the medicine 2 times a week for 3 weeks. It can be combined with other medications; the instructions do not prohibit this.

How effective is Arbidol?

Despite powerful marketing, the use of Arbidol is still controversial. A number of experts claim that the drug does not help at all with the flu and other infections. Others, on the contrary, claim its high effectiveness in seasonal epidemics.

The manufacturer on its website refers to numerous studies conducted in Russia and China, which allegedly proved the antiviral effect of umifenovir. However, in 2010, at the peak of the epidemic of influenza A (H1N1), known as swine flu, the World Health Organization issued guidance in which it indicated that the effectiveness of Arbidol was unproven. WHO experts noted the lack of transparent data on research methods, which contradicts the internationally accepted principles of evidence-based medicine.

In 2012, a study of the effectiveness of Arbidol began in Russia, conducted according to all the rules (double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled). Preliminary data show significant improvements in flu in people taking umifenovir. However, the study is funded by the manufacturer itself, which means it can hardly be called unbiased. In addition, there are some errors in its design that can seriously affect the outcome.

All clinical studies referred to by the manufacturer, Pharmstandard, were conducted only by Russian scientists. The international community was very cautious about Arbidol, believing that its effectiveness had not been proven. Currently, European researchers independent of Pharmstandard have conducted only a few in vitro (test tube) studies, which, unfortunately, cannot serve as proof that Arbidol helps people.

How and after what time does the drug work?

Arbidol has antiviral, anti-intoxication, antioxidant and immunomodulatory effects.

The antiviral effect is characterized by the ability of the drug to combine with the hemagglutinin protein in the virus envelope.

It is thanks to hemagglutinin that the virus combines with tissues, organs and causes the development of inflammatory and infectious processes.

The entry of viruses into the body's systems causes unpleasant symptoms - runny nose, headache, otitis media, sore throat, body aches, weakness, chills and increased body temperature.

Arbidol blocks the protein, causing the virus to stop reproducing and die. The drug counteracts the development of infectious and inflammatory processes, instantly blocking viruses that have penetrated even the mucous membranes.

Arbidol is also able to relieve cold symptoms within a few hours after the first dose and alleviate the course of the disease.

The immunomodulatory effect of the drug is characterized by the activation of phagocytes and the destruction of viruses, an increase in the release of interferons, which are responsible for the response of the immune system to viral penetration.

The drug is also capable of:

  • reduce the risk of developing diseases during seasonal epidemics (influenza, ARVI);

reduce the frequency of exacerbations of colds; make the course of the disease mild and practically asymptomatic; reduce the risk of complications; cure rotavirus infections in children.

The anti-intoxication effect of Arbidol is to weaken the symptoms of intoxication - weakness, dizziness, headache, chills, etc.

Description of the drug

Arbidol is a direct antiviral drug whose activity has been proven against many different viruses that cause influenza and ARVI. The drug acts against influenza viruses, parainfluenza, adenoviruses, enteroviruses, including Coxsackie, rotavirus and many others. Arbidol has been known for a long time, but only in the last decade have scientists rediscovered it, studied its mechanism of action and discovered new effects on patients with influenza and ARVI. Arbidol has been proven to shorten the recovery period for influenza by up to 2 days, alleviate the condition of patients (feeling of intoxication is reduced, headaches and fever are reduced) and, most importantly, reduces the risk of complications such as pneumonia - by 96%, otitis media - by 77 %, bronchitis - by 89%. The main condition for achieving good results in treatment is timely administration of the drug and compliance with the course of treatment and dosages.

Properties, composition and release forms of the drug

Arbidol is an antiviral drug. It provokes the production of a natural protein responsible for fighting viruses - interferon. Its action is to neutralize as many hostile cells as possible and develop immunity to infection. Children's Arbidol stimulates the activity of magrophages - protective cells. The purpose of the drug is to prevent harmful microbes from settling on healthy tissues.

As a result of treatment with Arbidol, the cyclicity of viral diseases in a child decreases, the recovery process proceeds faster, the immune system gains strength, and intoxication of the body is reduced to zero. The drug promotes the formation of a specific film on cell membranes, which makes them less vulnerable to viruses.

On pharmacy shelves, Arbidol for children is presented in two main forms of release:

  • Tablets of 50, 100, 200 mg are white or cream-colored dragees. Available in blister plates packed in cardboard packaging. The box contains from 10 to 30 tablets.
  • Powder for preparing a suspension, which contains small granules of white or cream color. The prepared suspension has a pleasant fruity aroma and taste of banana or cherry. The undiluted medicinal mixture is in a dark glass container placed in a cardboard package. The kit includes a measuring spoon and instructions for using the drug. The dosage of the active substance in 5 ml of prepared syrup is 25 mg.

Arbidol capsules of 50 mg and 100 mg of the active ingredient have been produced. Available in packs of 10, 20, 30, 40 pieces. Since the capsules cannot be chewed, this form is not suitable for children under 3 years of age. For children under this age, it is ideal to use the suspension.

The main active ingredient of Arbidol is umifenovir hydrochloride. Additional substances are used for each form:

  • hypermelosis;
  • titanium dioxide;
  • potato starch;
  • polysorbate80;
  • microcrystalline cellulose
  • sodium benzoate;
  • sodium chloride;
  • sucrose;
  • flavorings;
  • maltodextrin

Compound

The active substance in the drug is the substance Arbidol (chemical substance Umifenovir hydrochloride). The amount of active substance in one dose of Arbidol can be 0.025 g (in 5 ml of the finished solution), 50 mg (0.05 g), 100 mg (0.1 g) or 200 mg (0.2 g) depending on the release form .

Other components in the composition of the product are the following:

  • povidones;
  • salts Si and Ca;
  • cellulose;
  • starches;
  • dyes;
  • macrogoals;
  • PEG.

Indications for use

The medicine is recommended for the prevention and treatment of influenza, parainfluenza, respiratory syncytial virus, herpes, adenovirus, etc. Arbidol has shown excellent action in the fight against acute viral infections of the gastrointestinal tract such as rotavirus and entrovirus and prevention.

Many parents are interested in: at what age is the drug approved for children? Previously, it was prescribed to children from the age of two, but currently its use is allowed only from 3 years. It is believed that taking medication in tablet form is difficult for a child under this age. The effect of the drug is to block the protein of the viral shell, which prevents the further development of the virus and its penetration into the cell. This is especially effective for cells of the respiratory and gastrointestinal tract. Then the body’s immune system is stimulated, which, combined with the first effect, reduces the likelihood of complications and makes the course of the disease mild.

Within 90 minutes after taking the medicine, the maximum concentration of the drug in the blood is reached. And within 24 hours, 90% of the drug is eliminated from the body, with 40% of it leaving unchanged. The liver processes about 39% of the drug, and the kidneys, in turn, 21%. Arbidol is a slightly toxic drug; its lethal dose is 4 grams per kilogram of body weight. However, the maximum dosage is a condition that cannot be neglected.

How does diet affect umifenovir?

The dosage form does not affect when to take Arbidol before or after meals. The instructions indicate that the suspension/tablet/capsule is consumed orally before meals, but it does not specify how long after it should be eaten.

There have been no controlled studies on how umifenovir interacts with food. Therefore, doctors give general recommendations for all medications.

When is the best time to take Arbidol:

  • for a single dose - on an empty stomach 1 time/day before meals in the morning;
  • with a 4-time dose - on an empty stomach 1 time before breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack, dinner;
  • if you accidentally skip a medication, 2 hours after your last meal.

Any form of umifenovir should be taken with water. Clinical observations have confirmed that the medicine taken before meals does not irritate the gastric mucosa.

It can be safely drunk on an empty stomach by patients with gastritis or ulcers.

What time interval is observed between the consumption of Arbidol and food depends on the form of the drug . Aqueous solutions remain in the stomach for up to 15 minutes, so after taking the suspension you can eat a quarter of an hour later. The shells of tablets and capsules take longer to dissolve.

In order not to impair the absorption of umifenovir, solid forms of the drug are consumed half an hour before meals.

Attention! Drinks containing alcohol have a negative effect on umifenovir and take a long time to be absorbed by the body.

During treatment with Arbidol, do not drink alcohol or heated beer/wine and similar alcoholic folk remedies.

Why don't you drink the product with food?

If a dose of Arbidol is taken on an empty stomach, it is quickly absorbed into the gastrointestinal tract and carried by the blood to the internal organs. The maximum concentration of umifenovir was detected no later than 90 minutes after taking the medication before meals. That is, the substance begins to act in the first 1.5 hours from the moment of its consumption.

Food in the stomach interferes with the rapid absorption and timely onset of action of the antiviral drug.

Attention! If you accidentally skip Arbidol after a meal, you are allowed to drink it 2 hours later.

During this time, food has already moved from the stomach further along the gastrointestinal tract and will not interfere with the absorption of umifenovir.

Classification of ARVI in children and possible complications

Depending on the causative agent, acute respiratory viral infections in children are divided into several types: influenza, parainfluenza, adenovirus, rhinovirus, respiratory syncytial and rotavirus infection. These pathogens cause more or less clinically comparable symptoms in the form of fever and one or more symptoms such as chills, headache, general malaise, loss of appetite, as well as certain lesions of the respiratory system, which may include rhinitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, laryngotracheitis, bronchitis, sometimes conjunctivitis. Thanks to the mechanisms of innate and acquired immunity, the body is able to resist the pathogen. But due to imperfect immunity, it is impossible to accurately predict how the child’s body will react to the invasion of the virus, which can lead to the development of serious complications such as bacterial sinusitis, otitis media and pneumonia. Experts know of cases where, against the background of parainfluenza and influenza, children developed acute stenosis of the larynx (false croup) with obstruction of the upper respiratory tract. In this condition, the child needs emergency care due to the risk of suffocation. False croup is a consequence of delayed or ineffective treatment of ARVI, rhinitis, pharyngitis and other ENT pathologies of a viral nature

This is why it is so important to start taking an antiviral drug in the first hours after severe hypothermia or contact with a carrier of the virus.

Reviews from doctors about Arbidol

Maria P., therapist, Moscow

“When a flu epidemic begins and the swine flu virus appears, none of the patients refuses to receive Arbidol’s prescriptions, everyone understands the importance of treatment, patients comply with the course, bed rest and recover in a timely manner and without complications”

Elena O., infectious disease specialist in St. Petersburg

“When seasonal incidence increases, I recommend that therapists prescribe direct antiviral drugs, because they not only help patients, but also reduce the risk of infection for those who have been in contact with the sick person. I hear the best reviews from general practitioners about Aarbidol.”

Oksana Sh, therapist, Krasnoyarsk

“I often treat patients who get sick and spend the first 2 days hoping for recovery without taking any treatment. Complications often develop later. I try to prescribe Arbidol right away. Then everything goes fine, of course, depending on the patient’s characteristics.”

Of course, we have to explain to the mother that this drug is a medicine, and not very tasty, we must try to give the medicine to the baby, follow the frequency of administration and the course of treatment.”

Vera Shch., pulmonologist, Dolgoprudny

“Unfortunately, I often encounter the consequences of improper treatment: often with the flu, viral or bacterial pneumonia develops. It is necessary to use antiviral drugs and complex treatment. If patients immediately took, for example, Arbidol, at the onset of influenza, they would not end up in our hospital.”

Marina V., therapist, Samara

“I use different drugs, but I noticed that after taking immunomodulators, patients recover, but they begin to get sick more often. Now I use Arbidol and Tamiflu - these are real antiviral drugs, they are recognized by WHO, and they are recommended by the Ministry of Health. I see that they are working properly"

Alina K., Khimki, pediatrician

“I’ve been prescribing Arbidol since I was a student. Then, in fact, there was no other choice. Nowadays there are many different drugs, but I trust those drugs that I have been working with for a long time, which have few side effects, are well tolerated and help my patients quickly.”

“I believe that it is inappropriate to use immunomodulators in children with colds and flu. After all, the cause of ARVI is viruses; here we need drugs that act directly on the virus. There are really few such drugs. If I’m sure that the child has the flu, I prescribe Tamiflu, and if it’s more like ARVI, then, of course, Arbidol, it has a wide spectrum of action.”

Anna Z., Ufa, therapist

“Many patients complain that Arbidol does not help them. When you start to understand, you are faced with a situation where patients expect a rapid decrease in temperature, but this does not happen, because Arbidol does not have an antipyretic effect. Its main effect is antiviral and reduces the risk of developing complications of influenza, because this is the worst thing - pneumonia, bronchitis, meningitis, kidney damage.”

Alla U., cardiologist

“It would seem that cardiology is far from the problems of influenza, but this is not so. Our patients constitute the so-called risk groups, in which complications of influenza develop faster and more often than in other patients. The influenza virus affects small vessels and can provoke an exacerbation of the underlying disease, hypertensive crisis, and cardiac ischemia. Our patients are required to undergo vaccination, and if they have not received one, they need to use antiviral drugs, such as Arbidol or Tamiflu.

Analogues of the drug

Arbidol has analogues for the active component:

  • Arpetol (Belarus);
  • Arpeflu (Belarus);
  • Arpetolide (Belarus);
  • Immusstat (Ukraine).

The effectiveness of these drugs has not been proven, so they cannot be found in Russia. But there are several drugs with a different active ingredient, but a similar effect. Here's a quick overview of them:

  • Anaferon (purified interferon gamma antibodies). Form: tablets. The product is approved for use for children from 1 month. Price - about 220 rubles per pack of 20 tablets.
  • Viferon (human interferon + vitamins). Form - ointment (140), suppositories (200-600) and gel (120 rubles). Can be used even for newborns.

An analogue of Arbidol is Viferon.

  • Remantadine (rimantadine hydrochloride). Form - tablets and capsules (80-150 rubles). Contraindicated for children under 7 years of age.
  • Immunal (echinacea). Form - solution and tablets for oral administration (price about 260 rubles). Can be given to babies from 1 year.

Arbidol is a good antiviral agent that works if used correctly. The drug helps the body become immune to viruses upon contact with sick people or enhances protective reactions at the initial stage of an infectious disease. Therefore, this medicine should be given to the child either for prevention or when the first signs of a cold appear. If you start treatment on the second or third day of illness or later, there will be no effect.

How does Arbidol act on the body?

Arbidol belongs to the group of immunostimulating antiviral drugs, that is, it gives the body an impetus to antiviral activity. The active substance umifenovir (arbidol in the form of monohydrate hydrochloride) blocks a protein located on the surface of the virus, which destroys body cells. The virus dies. The required concentration of arbidol is achieved within an hour. It is easily absorbed, metabolized in the liver, and excreted. Taking this medicine for preventive purposes will reduce the risk of possible disease several times.

The immunostimulating effect of the drug lies in the activation of interferon production. This is a substance that is responsible for the body’s resistance to viruses and other infections. This drug reduces the symptoms of the disease due to its detoxification effect. Intoxication in a child occurs with minimal consequences, the baby quickly becomes cheerful, he has a desire to move and play. The immune response to the virus is positive.

Indications for use

It is easy to recognize a child's cold, but it is also easy to confuse it with another more serious disease, so the use of any drug requires examination of the child by a pediatrician. Arbidol, which has an antiviral effect, is prescribed for diagnosing the following problems:

  • prevention of exacerbation and treatment of acute respiratory diseases and influenza A and B at various stages in adults and children from 2 years of age;
  • treatment of rotavirus and intestinal infections in children from 2 years of age;
  • nonspecific prevention of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in children over 6 years of age and adults, its treatment in children over 12 years of age and adults;
  • prevention of postoperative complications to maintain immunity;
  • treatment of complications of chronic bronchitis, pneumonia, herpes.

Mechanism of action

To understand how Arbidol works for influenza and ARVI (more precisely, the mechanism of action described in the instructions), you need to remember how the disease develops.

The influenza virus enters the cell of the mucous membrane of the respiratory system and is integrated into its metabolism

The virus itself does not have a cellular structure and cannot reproduce in the body. In order to cause a disease, it needs to penetrate the cell of the mucous membrane of the respiratory system and integrate into its metabolism. To do this, on the surface of the virus there is a protein (more precisely, a glycoprotein) called hemagglutinin, which is attached to the cell membrane and ensures the penetration of the virus genome through it.

The flu medicine Arbidol, according to the instructions, binds to the hemagglutinin of the virus and blocks its interaction with cell membranes. At the same time, the drug stimulates the body’s production of interferons – antiviral proteins; increases the activity of macrophages and the number of lymphocytes in the blood.

These properties make it possible to use Arbidol against influenza, as well as for the treatment of rotavirus infection and in the complex treatment of herpesvirus infections.

Price

Arbidol and its analogues have similar effects and are used for the same diseases, but the price of these drugs varies significantly. In particular, it depends on where and by whom exactly the analogue was produced. The cheapest medications include Immunal and Anaferon, but they are homeopathic drugs, and many doctors claim their weak effectiveness, although they are much cheaper than Arbidol.

The most common forms of Arbidol release are capsules. The price for a package of 20 capsules is on average 450 rubles, while 10 pieces costs about 250. The suspension is much more expensive, and besides, it has a short shelf life - only 10 days and can only be considered as an analogue of capsules if the child is young.

Kagocel, in turn, is produced in only 10 tablets per package, and its price is almost equal to the cost of 10 capsules of Arbidol, and it can easily replace it. Ergoferon is cheaper than Arbidol, but is an unequal analogue of this medicine.

What is Arbidol for?

Many consumers consider this medication to be a medicine with unproven effectiveness. But this version can be disputed. Tablets and suspensions effectively cope with their task. Thanks to this, the drug has gained high popularity: it is often prescribed by therapists and pediatricians. So what does Arbidol help with? What effect does it have on the body?

The medication is prescribed to correct viral and bacterial infections. It induces interferon synthesis. The drug has an immunomodulatory effect and has antiviral activity, confirmed by clinical studies. After oral administration, the drug stimulates cellular immunity and the phagocytic function of macrophages. The drug fights influenza and other respiratory diseases. The medicine suppresses the interaction of the virus with healthy cells and prevents the fusion of the lipoid membrane of the pathogenic cell with the membrane of a healthy one.

According to the instructions, the drug increases the body's resistance to various types of diseases. It also prevents the development of complications. The medicine shortens the duration of the disease and reduces the severity of its symptoms.

pharmachologic effect

Important! Arbidol differs from its synonyms (generics) in low toxicity. The manufacturer guarantees high safety only if therapeutic dosages are observed.

How to take Arbidol for children

The method of administration and dosage of the drug Arbidol depends on the form of release of the drug. If in doubt, it is better to consult your pediatrician or pharmacist before purchasing. All release options are suitable for both adults and young patients. This is a great advantage of the product. Take a closer look at the differences between the proposed options.

Pills

This release form is great for children who have learned to swallow independently. The active substance is umifenovir (arbidol), dosage – 50 or 100 mg. The main quality of this form is the size, which is comfortable for children to receive. Externally, these are film-coated white or creamy round tablets with small convexities on both sides. There is a mark in the middle for convenient and even division of the tablet into two parts. At the break the color is yellowish-green or cream.

Capsules

Arbidol is also available in white capsules with a yellow cap. Inside there is cream or yellowish powder and granules. This option is more suitable for adults or teenagers due to its large size. There are no other differences. Dosage for children and adults depends on individual indicators, the patient’s condition, the severity of the disease, etc. The attending physician may reduce or increase the dose at his or her discretion if necessary. You cannot do this on your own.

A single dose for capsules, tablets and suspension is:

  • for children over 12 years of age and adults – 200 mg;
  • for children from 6 to 12 years – 100 mg;
  • for children from 3 to 6 years old – 50 mg.

For the treatment of ARVI and rotavirus infections, patients are prescribed:

  • children over 12 years of age and adults – 200 mg 4 times a day for 5 days;
  • from 6 to 12 years – 100 mg 4 times a day for 5 days;
  • from 3 to 6 years – 50 mg 4 times a day for 5 days.

For contact with a patient with respiratory infections or influenza, the dosage is as follows:

  • for children over 12 years of age and adults – 200 mg per day;
  • from 6 to 12 years – 100 mg per day;
  • from 3 to 6 years – 50 mg per day.

During periods of epidemics and viral activity, the drug is prescribed:

  • children over 12 years of age and adults – 200 mg twice a week;
  • from 6 to 12 years – 100 mg twice a week;
  • from 3 to 6 years – 50 mg twice a week.

Suspension

This form of the drug is excellent for very young patients from 2 years of age. The suspension is sold in bottles in powder form, which must be diluted with water. It has a pleasant sweet taste or a fruity aroma to choose from. This form of release has proven itself positively in pediatrics in the treatment of acute respiratory viral infections and other viral diseases in preschool children. In addition, the suspension has other positive qualities:

  1. The bottle of powder is equipped with a child-proof plastic cap.
  2. Convenience of diluting the powder: the bottle has a special mark indicating the level of water that needs to be poured inside to prepare the suspension. Just pour clean liquid inside and shake.
  3. The kit includes a plastic spoon for dosing the drug.

The dose of the suspension for the treatment of influenza virus and other infections is no different from tablets or capsules; you just need to take into account that 5 ml of suspension (one scoop) contains 25 mg of medication. As a result, the dosage for children is as follows:

  • from 6 to 12 years – 4 spoons 4 times a day for 5 days;
  • from 2 to 6 years – 1-2 spoons 4 times a day for 5 days.

Arbidol when feeding is not the best choice!

Useful information: Derinat drops, nasal spray (solutions) and injections (injections): instructions, features of use in children and adults. What does Derinat help with?

Young mothers often wonder whether it is possible to drink Arbidol while breastfeeding?

Answer: It is not recommended to use the drug, because the medicine enters the baby’s body with mother’s milk.

What is better to drink when breastfeeding and pregnancy if you have a cold?

Answer: It is better not to take pills at all, but to use drugs that act directly on the nasopharyngeal mucosa.

So, for the treatment of ARVI during pregnancy and lactation, instead of Arbidol, it is better to buy one of the modern safe local drugs - a nasal spray or drops. Such medications practically do not penetrate into a woman’s blood, which means they cannot harm the body of the mother and child.

Release form

Arbidol is produced in three forms:

  1. A powder to which water is added and prepared for oral administration. This form is most convenient for children, as it is easy to swallow and dose using the measuring spoon included with the bottle. The powder is characterized by a white color and a fruity odor. It is 37 grams placed in a dark glass bottle with a volume of 125 ml. The bottle has a mark located at the 100 ml level to help you properly dilute the powder with water. The finished suspension has a fruity aroma and a white-cream or white-yellow color.
  2. Film-coated tablets. They are round, convex on both sides, white or white-cream in color, and if you break the tablet, you will see the white contents, which can have a cream or greenish-yellow tint. The tablets are sealed in blisters or polymer jars from 10 to 40 pieces in one package.
  3. Capsules. They are less often prescribed to children because these hard gelatin capsules are larger in size than the tablet form. The color of the capsules differs depending on the dosage: yellow ones contain 50 mg of the active ingredient, and white ones with a yellow cap contain 100 mg. Inside there is a granular and powdery substance that is white with a yellow-green or cream tint. One package contains from 5 to 40 capsules.

Separately, we note the medicine Arbidol Maximum. Under this name, the manufacturer offers capsules with an increased dosage of the active compound. They have a white cap, and the contents are the same as Arbidol capsules. One pack of this medicine includes 10 or 20 capsules.

Use of 50 mg tablets

You already know what Arbidol is used for. But this is not enough. You need to figure out how to take the drug correctly. If you purchased dragee tablets, the dosage of which is 50 mg per capsule, then the instructions for their use will be as follows:

  • for treatment, adults are prescribed 4 tablets every 6-7 hours for 5 days, for prevention purposes - 4 tablets per day for two weeks;
  • children from 6 to 12 years old need to take 2 tablets 4 times 5 days, for prevention - 2 tablets per day for 2 weeks.

Until 6 years of age, the medication in this form is not used.

Storage and shelf life

Capsules, tablets and powder undiluted with water should be made at home at temperatures up to 250C in a place where the drug cannot be reached by a small child. The shelf life of unopened powder, Arbidol Maximum capsules and coated tablets is 2 years, and Arbidol capsules - 3 years. After preparing the suspension, the medication should be stored in the refrigerator for no longer than 10 days. At the same time, freezing the drug is unacceptable.

We invite you to watch the next equally interesting episode of Dr. Komarovsky about antiviral medicines for children.

Undiluted powder must be stored out of the reach of children until its expiration date, which is 2 years. The unopened bottle should be kept at a temperature below 25 degrees Celsius. Once a suspension has been prepared from the medicine, this liquid form should be used within 10 days and stored in the refrigerator (at a temperature below 8 degrees). This liquid medicine cannot be frozen.

Action of Arbidol

Umifenovir is registered in the list of drugs as an antiviral and immunomodulatory agent. After swallowing, the tablet dissolves in the intestines. The components of the drug penetrate the bloodstream and distribute into the tissues. Umifenovir has demonstrated its effectiveness against influenza A and B viruses. Arbidol also fights other pathogens of acute respiratory infections. The therapeutic effect of the drug depends on the severity of the patient’s condition and the prescribed dosage. A viral infection begins with infection of the mucous membrane of the respiratory tract. The infectious agent, together with saliva, enters the integumentary tissue and penetrates the cell. Viral particles gradually accumulate: new pathogens are released into surrounding tissues and quickly spread throughout the body. Umifenovir prevents the fusion of viral particles with cells, thereby stopping the development of the infectious process.

Other properties

  • Improving immune function. The body's defense system needs special substances to fight infection. In response to viral invasion, white blood cells and other cells release interferons that prevent pathogens from multiplying. Umifenovir is an external interferon inducer. Prevention can be done with this medicine.
  • Antioxidant effect. Any disease weakens the protective properties of tissues. Dangerous forms of oxygen begin to damage healthy cells, causing the symptoms of the disease to intensify. Antioxidants strengthen cell membranes.
  • Cleansing the body of toxins. Harmful substances enter the blood after the destruction of viral particles. The drug significantly reduces the number of viruses and alleviates the symptoms of intoxication.
  • Reducing the likelihood of complications. Improper treatment of ARVI leads to bacterial infection. Using antiviral drugs helps protect organs from other pathogens.
  • Reducing the duration of rehabilitation. Symptoms of weakness and fatigue often persist after recovery. Taking umifenovir quickly restores the body's resources.

Antiviral medications rarely speed up recovery. The main goal is to eliminate symptoms.

Adverse reactions

The active component of the drug rarely causes side effects. This non-toxic substance improves the condition of tissues during illness. Only minor complaints are possible. Rare side effects during treatment:

The medicine must be prescribed by a doctor

  • Headache.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Allergic reaction.

Intolerance to a drug component is the most serious complication. If rashes appear on the skin during therapy, you should stop taking the pills and consult a doctor.

Suspension for children

The suspension is sold in pharmacies less often than other dosage forms. The finished syrup is stored on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator for no longer than 10 days. After this period, the medicine must not be used. Patients over 2 years old can use the solution for medical reasons.

To prepare the syrup, pour 30 ml of warm water into the bottle with the powder after boiling. Then you need to close the lid and shake the liquid so that the contents dissolve. Then pour a little more water into the bottle so that its level reaches 100 ml, close it and shake again. After this procedure, the suspension is ready.

A single dose depends on the age of the child:

  • 2 – 6 years – 10 ml;
  • 7 – 12 years – 20 ml;
  • from 13 years – 40 ml.

The solution is taken according to the following scheme:

  • To prevent colds - a single dose twice every 7 days. Duration of treatment – 20 days.
  • To prevent viral infections after contact with a patient - 1 dose within 14 days.
  • To cure the flu, acute respiratory infections - a single serving four times. Therapy lasts 5 days.

The final dose of the medicine will be determined by the pediatrician, taking into account the age and individual characteristics of the child’s body.

Arbidol's analogs

At the pharmacy you can purchase direct analogues of the product containing umifenovir as an active ingredient. These are Immusstat, Arpetol, Mednat and other trade names. There are indirect analogues of Arbidol with similar medicinal properties:

  • Amiksin is an immunomodulatory agent.
  • Kagocel is an interferon inducer.
  • Ingavirin is an antiviral drug.
  • Hyporamine is a herbal medicine that improves immune function.

Ingavirin is an analogue of Arbidol

Important! Indirect analogues differ from Arbidol in contraindications and side effects. A doctor's consultation is required.

Arbidol Reviews, Efficiency, Analogs

From year to year we are intimidated by various epidemics. First it was bird flu, then swine flu, what will happen next remains a mystery. But, at the same time, the range of antiviral, including anti-influenza, drugs changes little.

Today, there are many different remedies that are actively advertised and offered to us, especially during a period of high incidence of respiratory diseases. And modern people need to understand this sea of medications, since not all of them are reliably effective and lead to positive results.

In particular, I want to share information about such an antiviral drug as Arbidol. It is quite common among the population and has been on the market for more than 15 years.

Arbidol (Arbidolum) is an antiviral drug that is an interferon inducer and has an immunomodulatory effect. Arbidol is effective not only against various strains of the influenza virus, but also against parainfluenza, respiratory syncytial virus, rotavirus and other viral diseases of the upper respiratory tract.

Its antiviral effect is ensured by suppressing the integration of a viral particle into a healthy host cell, so that the virus cannot enter the cell and multiply there.

The drug is used both for the treatment of the disease, and its greatest effectiveness is observed in the first three days from the onset of the disease, then the virus is already inside the cells and is unattainable for the action of arbidol, and for the prevention of the disease during the epidemic, since it has an immunomodulatory effect and induces the production human interferons.

Arbidol reviews.

Reviews from pediatricians about the drug Arbidol are quite positive, since it has proven itself over many years of practice as an effective antiviral drug for influenza, ARVI, herpes, etc. The effectiveness is especially high with timely treatment and correct use of the drug. It is also very important for pediatricians that arbidol can be prescribed to children from the age of two, which is a fairly significant factor for its use in pediatric practice.

Infectious disease doctors give only positive reviews about the drug Arbidol. They talk about the relevance of this drug in our time, when the immune layer of the younger generation is quite small and unreliable, and it is necessary to strengthen the immune system and increase the body’s resistance to various infectious agents.

The consumers themselves who used Arbidol for treatment provide very different reviews, mainly due to individual characteristics. Most reviews are positive, so some parents begin treatment of their children with the use of arbidol, and then add other components of therapy. Many also take the drug prophylactically, especially during the period of worsening epidemiological situation.

There are also negative reviews in which patients using arbidol did not receive the desired effect.

Indeed, there is an individual intolerance to the drug, which can manifest itself in different ways, for example, allergic reactions, which, in fact, is indicated as a possible side effect. In principle, no drug is immune from this.

Mode of application

— adults and children over 12 years old — 200 mg (2 capsules arbidol 100 mg each)

- children 6-12 years old - 100 mg

- children 2-6 years old - 50 mg

If you nevertheless have problems while using this antiviral drug, then it is better to use an arbidol analogue in treatment: Interferon, Anaferon, Amantadine, Remantadine, Amiksin, etc.

Reviews and prices

The drug has mixed reviews. Not all studies confirm the effectiveness of the active substance. The product is used only in domestic practice. A clear advantage of Arbidol can be considered good tolerability. According to doctors, the effects of treatment occur only when the pills are taken in a timely manner.

The average price of a package of children's medicine for 40 tablets (100 mg) is 750 rubles. The average price of a package of an adult drug for 10 tablets (200 mg) is 500 rubles.

pharmachologic effect

Wikipedia testifies that Arbidol is an antiviral medicine. In the body, it suppresses the activity of influenza A and B viruses, as well as coronavirus associated with severe respiratory syndrome.

Thanks to a special mechanism of action, the drug specifically affects viruses and demonstrates interferon-inducing activity (that is, it promotes the production of interferon in the body).

The active substance stimulates humoral and cellular immune responses, which helps increase resistance to the effects of viral infections. The drug, taking into account its mechanism of action, is a fusion inhibitor.

It interacts with the hemagglutinin of the virus, preventing the fusion of the lipid membrane of the virus and cell membranes.

Arbidol reduces the incidence of complications associated with exposure to viral infections, and also reduces the incidence of exacerbations of chronic bacterial diseases.

Arbidol reduces the severity of general intoxication and symptoms, reduces the duration of the disease. Its moderate immunomodulatory effect is noted.

The medicine is low-toxic, when administered orally, without exceeding the dosage, it does not have a negative effect. Those who are interested in whether Arbidol is an antibiotic or not should understand that this drug is not an antibiotic.

Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics

Once inside, the active component of the drug is quickly absorbed from the digestive system. The highest concentration in plasma when using umifenovir 50 mg is observed after 1.2 hours, when using umifenovir 100 mg - after 1.5 hours.

Rapid distribution occurs across tissues and organs.

Metabolism occurs in the liver, the half-life is 17-21 hours. Approximately 40% is excreted unchanged from the body - the main part with bile, another small part - with the kidneys. On the first day, approximately 90% of the drug dose is eliminated from the body.

Arbidol tablets: effectiveness, reviews and contraindications

Doctors often prescribe Arbidol to their patients, what is this drug used for? Arbidol tablets (photo on the left) have an immunomodulatory effect on the body and are used for the prevention and treatment of colds and flu.

When used in the early stages of disease development, Arbidol tablets effectively reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases and the likelihood of complications.

It's no secret that even simple rhinitis, if treated only symptomatically, that is, simply stopping the symptoms, can develop into sinusitis, and this is a much more serious disease that requires complex drug treatment, and in case of complications, it does not exclude the possibility of puncture surgery .

If you turn to a drug such as Arbidol antiviral tablets in time, then such severe consequences for the body, of course, can be avoided. This drug is dispensed freely from pharmacies, that is, to purchase it there is no need to have a prescription from your attending physician.

It is worth noting

The scope of use of Arbidol tablets is quite wide due to the absence of significant side effects, of which only individual sensitivity to the components of the drug can be noted.

The effectiveness of Arbidol tablets can be judged by the numerous positive reviews posted by users on the Internet. Many people write that they use this drug to relieve the symptoms of colds and flu in a patient in the early stages, and at the same time they begin prophylaxis with Arbidol in other family members. As a rule, the result is positive, the patient recovers, and the infection does not spread.

The most famous domestic analogue of Arbidol is the drug Remantadine, however, Remantadine tablets, although highly effective, have a number of more serious contraindications and side effects, so if the choice depends on the degree of safety of the drug, then Arbidol should be chosen.

Contraindications

Not all patients tolerate the medication well. Any components of the tablet, powder or capsule can cause an allergic reaction. This condition is manifested by a skin rash, redness of the integumentary tissue, dizziness and other pathological signs. If signs of an allergy appear during treatment, you must stop taking the pills and consult a doctor.

Arbidol eliminates the symptoms of ARVI

Other contraindications:

  • Children under two years of age.
  • Carrying a child.
  • Breast-feeding.
  • Severe dysfunction of the kidneys and liver.

Important! You should consult your doctor before starting treatment. Individual contraindications are possible.

Additionally

You already know how the instructions for use recommend taking the drug “Arbidol”. Tablets, capsules and suspensions are used not only for the treatment of viral diseases and for their prevention. The medicine is prescribed in the following age dosages: for adult patients - 200 mg of the drug per application, 100 mg - for children under 12 years old, for children under 6 years old - 50 mg each. Conditions of use depend on the type of pathology:

  • For intestinal infection: with a break of 6 hours for 5 days.
  • To prevent complications after surgery: 2 days before the procedure and on the 2nd and 5th days after it - once.
  • For chronic bronchitis and recurrent pneumonia: 4 times a day for a week, and then every 2 days for a month.
  • During epidemic season: 2 times a week for 21 days.

Operating principle

Umifenovir as part of the drug is able to suppress the activity of the following pathogens:

  • Influenza viruses, including highly pathogenic subtypes.
  • Coronaviruses.
  • Rhinoviruses.
  • Adenoviruses.
  • Viruses that cause parainfluenza.
  • Respiratory syncytial viruses.

Taking Arbidol interferes with the fusion of viruses with cell membranes. In addition, this medicine activates the production of interferon and stimulates the cellular response to viral infection. Under its influence, the number of lymphocytes (especially T-helper cells and natural killer cells) increases, and macrophages more actively perform their phagocytic function.

The umifenovir contained in Arbidol has an antiviral effect, which consists in preventing the adhesion of viruses to mucosal cells. It is this effect that helps to quickly get rid of such symptoms of illness as a sore throat, runny nose or cough, and also helps to quickly eliminate general weakness, fever with chills, headaches and other signs of intoxication.

And in this issue, Dr. Komarovsky will tell us all about viral infections, how infection occurs and how to fight germs.

Since viruses cannot contact the cells of the human body, they soon die. This effect also determines the preventive effect of the drug. Once on the mucous membrane, the virus cannot gain a foothold in the respiratory tract and remains in the body for a limited amount of time without causing illness. If the drug is taken at the initial stage of ARVI, it helps alleviate the course of the disease and prevent complications.

The medicine is effective against influenza viruses, rhinoviruses, coronaviruses, RS viruses, adenoviruses and parainfluenza pathogens. In addition to its antiviral effects, Arbidol also has the following effects:

  • Immunostimulating. It is associated with the activating effect of the drug on macrophages, which improves the processes of phagocytosis, as well as on lymphocytes, as a result of which the number of natural killer and T-helper cells increases. In addition, umifenovir stimulates the synthesis of interferon, due to which the immune protective reaction to the virus will be stronger.
  • Detoxification. This effect is manifested by a decrease in signs of intoxication, since the drug prevents viral particles from damaging healthy cells in the mucous membrane. As a result, the inflammatory process is not supported, and the level of breakdown products in the blood from already damaged cells gradually decreases.

Clinically, the effect of umifenovir on the child’s body leads to:

  • Reducing the risk of contracting ARVI or influenza during the epidemic season.
  • Easier progression of viral respiratory tract infections.
  • Reducing the risk of complications of infections.
  • Reducing the frequency of exacerbations of chronic pathologies such as herpes or bronchitis.
  • Reducing the risk of infectious viral complications in the postoperative period.
  • Accelerate recovery from rotavirus.

At what age is it allowed to take it?

Arbidol in liquid form is contraindicated for children in the first two years of life. At the same time, in children over 2 years of age, the instructions recommend treating influenza, rotavirus infection or ARVI with this remedy. For SARS infection, the drug is used to treat children over 12 years of age, and for prophylactic purposes in children over 6 years of age.

Solid forms of Arbidol are approved for children over three years of age, provided that the baby can swallow them without problems. If there are problems with this, at the age of 3 years and older they continue to give the child the medicine in suspension. Due to the increased dosage, the drug Arbidol Maximum is given to children only from the age of 12.

Children under 2 years of age should not be given any form of the drug, since Arbidol in liquid form is approved only for the treatment of children over 2 years of age, and solid forms of the drug are prescribed only from 3 years of age. The annotation notes that the suspension is used in children two years old and older for influenza, ARVI or rotavirus. If such a medication is prescribed for SARS, then the limit for treatment will be the age of 12 years, and for prophylactic use - the age of 6 years.

Tablets or capsules are given to a three-year-old child and older, if the child is able to swallow them without much difficulty. If it is difficult for a child to swallow such a solid medicine, the doctor prescribes a suspension. Since the dosage in the Arbidol Maximum medication is increased, such capsules can be given to children only from 12 years of age.

Reviews

Many mothers speak well of the use of Arbidol in children, noting that taking this medicine in the first days of illness helped to quickly get rid of ARVI and recover from the flu. Parents who gave the medication for preventive purposes also confirm that their children began to suffer less from colds and acute respiratory viral infections during the season of such diseases, and if they did become infected, the illness was milder.

For treating children, mothers often prefer a suspension, since it is easy to dose, and the pleasant taste does not cause complaints among most children. However, many parents complain about its short shelf life, as well as its high cost. There are also reviews that mention the ineffectiveness of the drug.

Doctors' opinions regarding Arbidol also vary. Some pediatricians recommend it during the cold season and often use it in children with the flu or rotavirus. Others prefer to fight ARVI with symptomatic means, for example, Dr. Komarovsky places greater emphasis on drinking plenty of fluids, humidifying the air and frequent ventilation.

Many mothers speak positively about the suspension, noting that the use of Arbidol from the first days of the disease helped their children fight the runny nose and other symptoms of ARVI, and the period of elevated temperature during treatment with this medication was shortened. In addition, the use of the suspension reduced the risk of complications from influenza.

Parents praise this form of medication for its pleasant taste and ease of dosing. Moms also like that the product is a good preventative against viral infections during the cold season. As for the disadvantages, many parents include the short shelf life of the finished suspension. In addition, there are complaints about the ineffectiveness and high cost of the medication. Some mothers are afraid to give it to their child, confusing it with antibacterial medications or not trusting the manufacturer.

Indications

The suspension is prescribed:

  • For the prevention or treatment of influenza and other acute respiratory viral infections.
  • As a means of complex treatment of rotavirus enteritis.
  • To prevent or treat SARS pathology caused by coronaviruses.

The drug is prescribed at the first signs of intoxication, when the child’s body temperature has risen to more than 380 °C. The earlier treatment is started, the greater its effect will be.

Arbidol suspension is not prescribed to children who are intolerant to umifenovir or any other ingredient of the drug. Since the composition of this form of the drug includes simple carbohydrates, the drug should not be taken by children with glucose-galactose malabsorption, isomaltase deficiency, fructose intolerance or sucrase deficiency. In addition, the presence of sucrose should be taken into account when prescribing the suspension to a child with diabetes mellitus.

Arbidol is prescribed to children:

  • For viral infections of the upper respiratory tract, including parainfluenza and influenza. It is recommended to give the drug at the first symptoms, for example, at a temperature of 38 degrees, since an earlier start of administration allows you to achieve a more pronounced effect.
  • For rotavirus enteritis, as a drug for complex therapy.
  • With SARS syndrome caused by coronaviruses (also called SARS).
  • To prevent infection with viruses against which umifenovir is active.
  • For the treatment of chronic herpes, chronic bronchitis or pneumonia. For such pathologies, the drug is prescribed in addition to the main therapy.
  • To prevent infectious complications in patients undergoing surgery.
  • For secondary immunodeficiencies.

The use of any version of Arbidol is not recommended if intolerance to umifenovir is detected. You should not give medications if you are hypersensitive to their other components.

Due to the presence of sucrose and maltodextrin in the suspension, this form is not used for malabsorption (glucose-galactose), isomaltase deficiency or sucrose deficiency. It should also be used with caution in diabetes mellitus. For adults, the medicine is not prescribed during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
