Cervical osteochondrosis is a degenerative-dystrophic process in the intervertebral discs of the cervical spine, accompanied by the replacement of cartilage with bone tissue and immobilization of the vertebrae. According to statistics, certain degenerative-dystrophic changes in the cervical spine are present in approximately half of people of working age - from 25 to 45 years.

Main symptoms, causes and stages of development
The initial form of the disease is characterized by a feeling of heaviness, discomfort and muscle tension. At stage 2 of the disease, pain occurs that can spread from the neck to the back.
Pain syndrome may be accompanied by signs of the disease such as:
- Constant drowsiness, fatigue.
- Dizziness and fainting.
- Headache.
- Crunching sound when turning the head or body.
- Decreased memory and mental performance.
- Hearing or vision impairment.
- Numbness and feeling of weakness in the hands.
- Loss of flexibility in the neck.
The following factors contribute to the development of the disease:
- Injuries and curvature of the spine.
- Flat feet.
- Sedentary or sedentary lifestyle.
- Hereditary predisposition.
- Impaired metabolism.
- Frequent overwork.
- Uncomfortable place to sleep.
- Severe hypothermia.
- Excess weight.
- Heavy physical activity.
- Infectious diseases.
- Frequent stress.
- Poor nutrition.
- Walking in uncomfortable shoes.
Osteochondrosis in any part of the spine develops gradually.
The following stages of the pathological process are distinguished:
- The appearance of cracks in the intervertebral discs due to a reduction in the distance between the vertebrae.
- Displacement of the vertebrae due to sagging muscles and ligaments.
- Development of arthrosis in intervertebral joints.
- Overgrowth of bone tissue, stopping excessive mobility of the vertebrae. Violation of the full motor function of the spinal column, loss of part of its previous functions.
Causes of osteochondrosis
Medical science cannot clearly answer what causes osteochondrosis. It is a well-known fact that the sedentary lifestyle to which modern people are exposed negatively affects the progression of this disease. Another interesting fact is that both physical inactivity and colossal loads in athletes lead to disc protrusion. The leading role is played by the hereditary factor. The following reasons are identified:
- burdened hereditary history;
- obesity;
- physical inactivity;
- metabolic disorders in the body;
- traumatic injuries of the spinal column;
- long-term static overloads and work associated with heavy lifting (working at a computer, lifting weights, miners, loaders, etc.);
- scoliosis;
- unfavorable environmental situation;
- flat feet and pregnancy;
- hypothermia and stress, which often cause exacerbations of the disease.
Medication treatment at home
Treatment of cervical osteochondrosis at home with medications is aimed primarily at getting rid of pain and inflammation. Next, therapy is carried out to restore and maintain the healthy state of the intervertebral discs.
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
The action of NSAIDs is aimed at reducing pain and reducing inflammation. The drugs interfere with the action of the enzyme cyclooxygenase, which is involved in the development of the internal inflammatory process.
For cervical osteochondrosis, some of the most effective NSAIDs are:
- Diclofenac. Adults and children over 15 years of age should take a 25-50 mg tablet 2-3 times a day. The drug is also used in the form of injections: up to 3 injections per day for 2-7 days.
- Voltaren. For patients over 12 years of age, the daily dosage in tablets is 100-150 mg.
- Celecoxib. The recommended daily dose for adults is 200 mg in 1-2 doses.
Therapeutic plasters
Patches containing medicinal components and microelements are a good alternative to tablets and injections. They do not have a harmful effect on internal organs, while eliminating swelling, improving blood circulation, and restoring cartilage tissue.
Therapeutic patches for osteochondrosis can be divided into the following types:
- Peppers. They have a mild irritant effect to increase blood circulation, relax muscles and nerve roots, and provide oxygen and nutrients. Recommended for use within 2-5 days.
- Painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs (Versatis, Voltaren). They are used for severe and acute pain, relieve spasms and pain, and restore damaged tissue. The patch can be on the skin for 12 hours, after which you need to take a 12-hour break.
- Chinese with natural plant extracts and insect poison. This composition relieves spasm, inflammation and swelling, restores blood supply and tissue nutrition. As a result, headaches, dizziness, and chronic fatigue disappear. The patch is applied for 3-4 days, then a 24-hour break is taken, then the procedure is repeated. The course of treatment can last up to 3 weeks.
Ointments and gels
In home treatment of the early stage of cervical osteochondrosis, ointments and gels, which are divided into:
- Anti-inflammatory (Voltaren, Nurofen). This group of drugs relieves inflammation and swelling, improves vascular permeability, and restores mobility in the joints. For patients over 14 years of age, it is recommended to apply the gel to the sore area up to 4 times a day, lightly rubbing it in.
- Warming and painkillers (Finalgon, Capsicam). They improve blood circulation, stimulate metabolic processes in tissues, and help relieve muscle tension. The ointment is applied with light rubbing movements 2-3 times a day. Contraindication is age under 12 years.
- Complex action (Dolobene, Fitobene). The products have antimicrobial, regenerating and antithrombotic effects. They can be used from the age of five, applying to the skin 2-4 times a day. The duration of use of drugs depends on the severity of the disease.
Muscle relaxants
The action of muscle relaxants is aimed at relieving muscle tone and spasm and reducing pain. The duration of the course depends on the degree of pain and progression of the pathology.
This category of drugs includes:
- Tizanidine. Adults are prescribed 2-4 mg of the drug 3 times a day. The dosage should be gradually increased to 10-20 mg per day.
- Baclofen. Both adults and children begin taking it under medical supervision with 15 mg per day, increasing the dose over 7-10 days to 30-70 mg per day.
- Mydocalm. The average dosage for adults is 50 mg three times a day.
Corticosteroids
These hormonal drugs, which include Methylprednisolone, Prednisone, Dexamethasone, eliminate inflammation 100%.
They are more effective than NSAIDs, but have serious side effects, such as:
- Increase in body weight.
- Increase in blood sugar.
- Increased blood pressure.
- Deterioration of bone tissue nutrition.
Steroid hormones are usually prescribed for a limited period of 1 or 2 weeks. The largest volume (the dose is calculated by the doctor) is taken on the 1st day of therapy, and then the dosage is gradually reduced.
Blockades
Blockades are performed in cases of severe pain when other treatment methods do not give the desired result. Pain relief is achieved by injecting an anesthetic (lidocaine or novocaine) into the affected area using a long needle. The pain usually goes away very quickly.
The blockade also relieves inflammation and muscle spasms and normalizes local blood circulation.
In this case, the medicinal substance acts directly on the affected area, without having a negative effect on other organs and systems. To eliminate pain and spasm, one procedure is usually sufficient, but sometimes in more complex cases it is necessary to do several blockades with a break of 4-5 days.
Vitamins B6, B12, A, C
Vitamin therapy is aimed at eliminating the internal causes of the disease.
In particular:
- Vitamin B6 improves blood circulation and the functioning of the central nervous system, strengthens muscles, and strengthens the immune system.
- Vitamin B12 normalizes metabolic processes, eliminates inflammatory processes in the body, and strengthens the nervous system.
- Vitamin A is involved in the protection of cartilage tissue, as well as in the process of hematopoiesis.
- Vitamin C has a healing effect on the entire body: improves the process of regeneration of bone and cartilage tissue, relieves inflammation, and removes toxins. With its participation, the processes of carbohydrate, protein and mineral metabolism are regulated.
Antidepressants and sedatives
Prolonged pain can trigger stress and depression.
The following are prescribed as sedatives:
- Valerian. The drug reduces excitation processes in the nervous system, eliminates excessive irritability, and improves sleep. Tablets should be taken 3 times a day, 1-2 pieces. Valerian tincture is prescribed to adults, 20-30 drops half an hour before meals.
- St. John's wort. St. John's wort extract has a tonic effect and will be effective for patients with low mood, weakness, and drowsiness. You can take the decoction up to 6 times a day, 1-2 tbsp. l.
- Combined herbal preparation "Persen". For increased nervous excitability and irritability, adults and adolescents over 12 years of age should take 2-3 tablets up to 3 times a day.
Antidepressants, such as Cymbalta, Fluoxetine, are prescribed to patients with more severe depressive disorders. Cymbalta is recommended to be taken once a day, 60 mg, regardless of meals. The starting dose of Fluoxetine for an adult is 20 mg per day. If necessary, you can increase the volume of the drug to 70-80 mg per day, dividing the dose into 3 doses.
Diuretics
This group of medications has a diuretic effect and removes excess fluid from the body. Such drugs are effective if the patient has increased intracranial pressure due to cerebrovascular accident. Also, the prescription of diuretics is advisable for tissue swelling and fluid accumulation in the body cavities.
The most well-known drugs include:
- Furosemide (daily dose for adults ranges from 20 to 80 mg).
- Hypothiazide (patients over 18 years of age should take 25-50 mg per day in 1 dose).
- Veroshpiron (daily dosage for adults is 50-100 mg once).
Chondroprotectors
Chondroprotectors are drugs containing the substances chondroitin and glucosamine. Their action is to stop the degenerative processes occurring in cartilage tissue and maintain its elasticity.
Forms of release of chondroprotectors:
- Tablets and capsules (Teraflex, Dona). Teraflex is prescribed to patients over 15 years of age, 1 capsule three times a day. After 3 weeks, you should switch to taking 2 capsules daily. The duration of treatment is from 3 to 6 months. Don tablets are taken at 750 mg twice a day. The minimum course of therapy is 4-6 weeks. After a two-month break, treatment can be repeated.
- Injections (Noltrex, Elbona). The dosage of drugs is calculated individually for each specific case of the disease (usually no more than 2.5 ml). The procedure for administering the medicine should be carried out by a qualified specialist to avoid complications.
- Ointments (Chondroxide, Chondroitin). Chondroxide ointment or gel is recommended to be applied to the skin surface up to 3 times a day. The product must be rubbed in until completely absorbed. The period of treatment with ointment is 2-3 weeks, with gel – up to 2-3 months. Chondroitin has a similar regimen of use.
Classification of symptoms for cervical osteochondrosis
The development of this disease sometimes occurs before the age of 30-35, so signs of the disease may appear even in adolescence. The signs of cervical osteochondrosis are discussed in detail below; the disease has become a real problem in the modern world. Sedentary work and prolonged stay in front of a computer negatively affect a person’s health and well-being. All symptoms of cervical osteochondrosis are associated with malfunctions of several systems:
- In advanced cases, there are signs of compression and the integrity of the spinal cord located in the spinal canal is compromised.
- The pathological process can affect the peripheral nervous system. The roots of the spinal cord located next to the areas of deformation of the osteochondral tissue are negatively affected.
- In some cases, pinching of the vertebral arteries occurs. These blood vessels deliver nutrients and oxygen to brain cells. Violation of these processes leads to a sharp deterioration in a person’s well-being.
Treatment with folk remedies: recipes and regimens
Treatment of cervical osteochondrosis at home is carried out using various folk methods, known for a long time and proven by more than one generation.
Compresses
The use of a cold compress is very effective for osteochondrosis. For this procedure it is convenient to use a piece of ice. Cold will reduce inflammation by constricting blood vessels, reduce pain, and relieve tissue swelling. A cold compress can be used up to 3 times a day.
The article provides effective methods for treating cervical osteochondrosis at home.
A good therapeutic result (relaxation, pain reduction, improved tissue nutrition) is achieved by a compress made according to the following scheme:
- Prepare products: 1 potato, 50 g honey, fir oil.
- Finely grate the potatoes, add honey, stir.
- Distribute the mixture over the neck and shoulders.

Treatment of symptoms of cervical osteochondrosis
Osteochondrosis is a polyetiological disease that cannot be cured with one course of therapy. You can’t take a “magic pill” and everything will go away; you need to radically change your lifestyle, since physical inactivity is the trigger factor. The most noticeable results are easier to achieve in the initial stage of the disease, when complaints are minimal and there are no compression syndromes of the roots and vertebral artery. In the acute stage of the disease, when the pain syndrome is pronounced, the following groups of drugs are prescribed:
- therapeutic paravertebral blockade (to relieve pain and relieve muscle spasms);
- NSAIDs (diclofenac, ibuprofen, xefocam, etc.);
- ointments containing NSAIDs and reflex action (capsicam, finalgon, nise, etc.);
- muscle relaxants (mydocalm, sirdalud);
- B vitamins (neurobion, neurovitam, etc.);
As the inflammatory process subsides and pain is relieved, they move on to physiotherapeutic treatment. The most commonly used methods are:
- laser therapy;
- electrophoresis;
- acupuncture;
- exercise therapy;
- massotherapy;
- manual therapy.
It is important to understand that osteochondrosis occurs with periods of exacerbation and remission, so it is very important to influence the cause, and not treat the effect.
Channel One, the program “Live Healthy” with Elena Malysheva on the topic “The main thing is vertical. What is the cause of osteochondrosis?
Life-TV, Vitaly Demyanovich Gitt, chiropractor, talks about the causes and symptoms of cervical osteochondrosis, and also offers exercises for its treatment.
It is better not to self-medicate. Even if you have proven methods that usually help cope with pain, this does not mean that you are doing everything right.
Pain can be caused not only by osteochondrosis, but also by intervertebral hernia, muscle disorders (myofascial pain syndrome), and be a symptom of other diseases. In order to properly treat the disease, you need to understand its causes and carry out differential diagnosis. This is only possible in a clinical setting.
In order to identify the cause of the disease and properly treat the symptoms of cervical osteochondrosis, you need to visit a neurologist and undergo an examination.
Visit a specialist doctor in medical. Make an appointment by phone at any time of the day.
Therapeutic baths
Treatment of cervical osteochondrosis at home is divided into several effective methods, one of which is taking baths with decoctions of medicinal herbs. The advantage of baths over medications is that they simultaneously affect different parts of the body and internal systems.
Herbal baths help with osteochondrosis in the following ways:
- Relieves fatigue.
- Reduce pain.
- Reduce tissue swelling.
- Promotes muscle relaxation and eliminates spasms.
- Accelerate metabolic processes in cartilage and joints.
- Helps with insomnia.
The result of therapeutic baths will be maximum with a course of use. One course includes 10-15 baths with an interval of 2-3 days. The water temperature should be between 33-36 °C. The duration of the procedure is 15-20 minutes. After the bath, it is advisable to rub your body with a towel, dress in warm and comfortable home clothes and lie under the blanket for half an hour.
Bird's knotweed baths
To prepare a bath you should:
- Pour 300 g of dried herb into 5 liters of boiling water.
- Leave in a warm place, covered, for 2 hours.
- Strain the finished broth and pour into water.
Chamomile baths
The chamomile bath is prepared similarly to the previous recipe (300 g of the plant per 5 liters of boiling water). The decoction should be brewed in an enamel or glass container. It is recommended to avoid contact with aluminum or plastic. It is best to take a bath with chamomile before bed, as it has a calming effect.
Baths with Jerusalem artichoke
A bath using earthen pear can be prepared in 2 main ways:
- 400 g of dry crushed stem or 1.5 kg of fresh plant, pour 5 liters of water, bring to a boil and cook over low heat for 30-40 minutes. After the broth has cooled to room temperature, add it to the bath water (can be unstrained).
- Cook a decoction of 150 g of dry crushed tubers and 3 liters of water over low heat for 45-50 minutes. Strain the cooled liquid and pour into the bath.
Horse chestnut baths
In this case, you will need 1.5 kg of fruit. You need to crush the nuts, add 5 liters of water and cook the mixture for half an hour. The finished broth should be cooled, strained and added to water.
Baths with birch leaves
Young birch leaves have a wide range of healing effects.
They provide the following effect:
- Anti-inflammatory.
- Anesthetic.
- Antimicrobial.
- Diuretic.
- Antispasmodic.
- Wound healing.
- Sedative.
To prepare a bath you need:
- Place 1 kg of leaves in a large saucepan.
- Pour 10 liters of cold water over the leaves.
- Boil the product for 2 minutes.
- Let it sit for an hour.
- Pour the broth into the bath.
It is recommended to take a bath before bed.
Baths with pine needles
To prepare the bath you will need 0.5 kg of dry or 0.8 kg of fresh pine needles. The plant needs to be steamed with 1 liter of boiling water and allowed to brew for 30 minutes. Then the infusion must be filtered and added to the filled bath.
Instead of natural pine needles, you can use pine extract (100 ml liquid or 70 g dry product per bath). An additional therapeutic effect will be obtained by adding 1-1.5 kg of sea salt to the water.
Nettle baths
The bath decoction is prepared as follows:
- Pour 100 g of dried roots or 250 g of dried nettle leaves into 1 liter of cold water.
- Boil the solution for half an hour.
- Cool the broth for 30-40 minutes.
- Strain it and add to the prepared water.
Neurological symptoms of cervical osteochondrosis
Some manifestations of the disease cannot immediately be attributed to characteristic signs. You should know which symptoms of cervical osteochondrosis cannot be ignored, for example, lack of air. If this section is damaged, phrenic nerve irritation syndrome may develop. The patient has difficulty breathing, there is a lack of oxygen, which causes shortness of breath and even severe suffocation.
This manifestation of pathology is often accompanied by snoring, which intensifies if you take an uncomfortable position while sleeping. This leads to the fact that a person does not rest at night, wakes up with a feeling of general malaise, weakness, and feels tired and overwhelmed. This condition, if left untreated, can lead to memory impairment, decreased concentration and irreversible changes in brain tissue.

Foil treatment
Treatment of cervical osteochondrosis at home using foil gives excellent results without the use of medications. The foil applied to the sore spot reflects the biocurrents of the body, and it itself begins to launch healing processes.
Eventually:
- Lymph and blood flow increases.
- Metabolic processes in tissues are accelerated.
- Relieves pain, spasm and inflammation.
Foil for osteochondrosis should be used as follows:
- Prepare several strips of foil (4-5 pieces) 1 cm wide.
- Glue an adhesive plaster to their matte side.
- Stick the strips onto the affected area vertically along the spine at a distance of 1.5 cm from each other.
The foil is applied to the body with the shiny side for 2-3 hours. The procedure must be performed daily until the pain disappears. Usually the course is 5-7 days.
general description
Most people spend their day in a sedentary position: at school, college, office, driving a car or at home at the computer. Over time, many begin to feel first discomfort and then pain after sitting for a long time. Posture deteriorates, stoop appears, it is difficult to straighten up or turn around.
This is how stage 1, the initial stage of osteochondrosis, manifests itself, in which it is easiest to cope with the disease. If measures are not taken, then in the future it threatens to become chronic with regular exacerbations. In some cases, the matter ends in disability.
REFERENCE: Osteochondrosis of the cervical spine accounts for half of all types of pathology.
The clinical picture of cervical chondrosis includes:
- pain caused by compression of the nerve roots. Depending on which vertebrae and discs are damaged, the pain may spread to the shoulder, forearm, or entire arm. Characterized by headaches, pressure surges;
- sensitivity disorder, mainly in the hands and fingers. There may be numbness, a burning sensation or crawling sensations;
- decreased strength and muscle tone on the affected side, sometimes muscle twitching and cramps;
- increased sweating, change in skin color - paleness, redness;
- chest pain;
- Vertebral artery syndrome occurs when one of the two arteries is pinched, which is accompanied by severe headaches, tinnitus, nausea, dizziness, and less commonly, difficulty swallowing.
Symptoms of chondrosis are primarily pain in the neck and shoulders, headaches and fatigue
There are no medications that can completely eliminate the cause of osteochondrosis. But you can get rid of its symptoms and prevent possible relapses by using simple methods.
Honey massage
Natural flower honey is used for massage. The duration of the course is 8-10 20-minute sessions.
Procedure steps:
- Light pats on the back with palms.
- Apply honey to the neck and shoulders using sliding movements of the hands.
- Strong pressing of the palms against the skin followed by a sharp tearing off.
- Wrapping the shoulder and cervical region.
- Rest for 20-30 minutes.
- Rinse off the remaining honey and apply moisturizing oil.
Honey massage helps:
- Cleanse pores.
- Improve metabolism.
- Relax muscle tissue.
- Get rid of pain and inflammation.
Temperature with osteochondrosis
In some cases, pathological processes spread among the structures of the cervical segment of the spinal cord. This happens with disc protrusions and canal stenosis. Temperature in osteochondrosis is the body’s response to these pathologies. The same reaction is possible with vertebral artery syndrome. This is a common occurrence in osteochondrosis in the last stages of the disease. Therefore, fever is considered a nonspecific symptom of the disease.
This sign will not necessarily be present; body thermoregulation may be normal. If you feel constant pain in the back of the head, shoulders, neck, and aggravation occurs when you turn or tilt your head, you should consult a specialist and undergo an examination. Lack of treatment will certainly lead to the condition worsening and the level of comfort of life to decrease.

Massage with a towel
Self-massage with a towel, which relieves muscle spasms and improves blood supply to the cervical spine, is performed as follows:
- Sitting on a chair with a straight back, take a towel by both ends with your hands, throw it over your neck and slowly rub the cervical area from top to bottom for 2-3 minutes.
- Rub your neck diagonally for 1-2 minutes, swapping the “top” and “bottom” of the towel.
- Pull the towel behind your neck parallel to shoulder level, release the tension, then sharply spread your arms to the sides. There will be a clap of the towel on the back of your neck. Repeat the action 10-15 times.
Exercise therapy
Therapeutic exercises are included in the basic standard of treatment for neck chondrosis and are selected by a physical therapy instructor. The first 1-2 classes are held in a clinic or health center, and then the patient can train himself at home.
Exercise 1. IP (starting position) – standing, feet shoulder-width apart. Tilt your head to the right, left, forward and backward. All movements should be slow and smooth; you should move your head back especially carefully, without throwing it back sharply.
Exercise 2. From the same IP, perform head turns to the sides. At the extreme point, look behind your back. Sometimes it’s not possible to turn your head much at first, and there’s no point in forcing events. Over time, the “block” restricting movement will disappear.
Exercise 3. Pull your shoulders back, bringing your shoulder blades together as much as possible. Hold this position for a few seconds, then bring your shoulders forward and round your back. The movement is similar to the famous “cat”, but is done in a standing position.
Another effective complex consists of the following exercises:
VSD and cervical osteochondrosis
- While standing or sitting, place your palms on your forehead and press your head on them, overcoming the resistance of your hands. Hold this position for 15-20 seconds.
- Putting your hands on the back of your head, press the back of your head on your hands, and with your hands on the back of your head.
- Place your palm on your right ear and apply mutual pressure, trying to tilt your head to your right shoulder. Then change sides and tilt your head towards your left shoulder, keeping your left hand on your left ear.
- Turning the head to the sides is performed by placing the palm on the left or right cheekbone. First, the hand lies on the right cheekbone, and the head tries to turn to the right, overcoming the resistance of the hand. Then the palm lies on the left cheek, and the head turns to the left. Pressure time – 15-20 seconds.
- Grasp the lower part of your head so that your thumbs are on the chin and the rest are on the back of your head. Carefully pull your head up; you can rock from side to side like “pulling a cork out of a bottle.” You cannot turn your head; the spine in the cervical region must be straight. The duration of the exercise is 15-20 seconds.
- Spread your arms to the sides and rotate first with your left, then with your right, and then with both shoulders. This exercise is especially useful for those who feel tension in the neck and shoulder area.
- Standing or sitting with a straight back, “roll” your head from left to right and in the opposite direction, tilting it as far down as possible at the middle point and trying to reach your chest with your chin. Number of repetitions – 10-12.
Resistance exercises can even be done at work
It is not necessary to perform the entire complex given if some exercises cause pain and severe discomfort. By agreement with the doctor, you can additionally hang on a horizontal bar or crossbar, engage in swimming, water aerobics and other permitted sports.
Massage pillow
The massage effect of the pillow is provided by rotating rollers.
This massage eliminates:
- Fatigue.
- Overwork.
- Headache.
- Spasms.
- Nervous tension.
Muscles are also strengthened, posture is corrected, and salts are removed from the body.
Drug treatment of osteochondrosis of the cervical spine
Drug treatment is used to dilate blood vessels and relieve pain.
Medicines will actually help improve blood circulation and alleviate the patient’s condition by relieving pain. But you need to understand that with such treatment we will only fight the consequences of cervical osteochondrosis, without solving the problem at the root. Thus, you will not cure the disease, but only alleviate your condition. Therefore, you should not abuse painkillers.
There are also drugs that help restore cartilage tissue. But the effectiveness of such treatment without the methods that I will discuss below remains questionable. Special ointments and gels that have an anti-inflammatory effect are also used for treatment.
Manual therapy at home
Manual therapy for osteochondrosis is aimed primarily at relieving spasms and improving local blood circulation. It is possible to carry out such therapy independently through exercises aimed at relaxing and stretching muscles in their spasmodic state.
The technique is based on gentle stretching of the muscle after slight muscular resistance directed in the opposite direction. As a result of regular exercise, the mobility of the compressed segments of the spine is completely restored.
Nausea
In some cases, compression of the vessels of the circulatory system occurs, which ensure the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the human brain and inner ear. Because of this, nausea occurs in osteochondrosis. These symptoms are usually accompanied by loss of appetite, which causes weight loss and a deficiency of essential nutrients.
Set of exercises, exercise therapy according to Bubnovsky
Gymnastics has proven itself well at any stage of pathology.
The complex includes 7 basic exercises:
- Tilt your head to your shoulder and wait 30 seconds. Return to the starting position and repeat the same for the other side.
- Touch your chin to your chest, then pull your neck up and forward.
- Throw your head back a little. Make turns with it left and right.
- Place your right hand on your left shoulder, raise your elbow, and smoothly turn your head to the right. Stay in this position and do the same for your left hand.
- Raise your hands up, clasping them above your head. Turn your head in the same way as in exercise 3.
- Pull your chin up while moving your arms behind your back.
- Stand up straight, lower your arms. Stretch your neck forward, slowly turn your head to the sides, trying to reach your chin to your shoulders.
The complex must be performed 10-15 times daily.
Stages
Progressive cervical osteochondrosis goes through four stages of development.
- Moderate dehydration of the central part of the intervertebral disc - the nucleus pulposus. The gradual loss of the shock-absorbing and supporting function of the intervertebral discs is compensated by reflex tension of the neck muscles. The patient may be disturbed by aching pain and a feeling of stiffness in the neck that occurs with sudden movements and hypothermia.
- Exhaustion of compensatory capabilities of muscles. Manifested by myositis, spasms and congestion. Spasmed muscles compress capillaries and blood vessels, preventing normal blood supply to the intervertebral disc. As dystrophic changes develop, the framework of the intervertebral disc, or the fibrous ring, becomes thinner; the dehydrated nucleus pulposus flattens and forms a protrusion - a slight protrusion forward or backward within the annulus fibrosus. Under the influence of excessive loads, bone growths are formed on the articular processes and bodies of the cervical vertebrae - osteophytes, which partially compensate for the pressure on the vertebra. Painful sensations in the neck area become familiar and acquire a clear localization; instability of the cervical vertebrae occurs, cases of subluxations and dislocations become more frequent during sharp turns and tilts of the head.
- Flattening and thinning of the intervertebral discs leads to the formation of extrusions. The edge of the deformed nucleus pulposus breaks the fibrous ring in the weakest area and extends beyond the edges of the vertebral body. As a result of compression of muscles, nervous and vascular formations by extrusions and osteophytes, compression complications arise.
- The intervertebral discs, ligaments and cartilages of the intervertebral joints are completely calcified; osteophytes of neighboring vertebrae form ankyloses - they connect with each other, immobilizing the affected segment; neck pain stops.
Giving up bad habits helps maintain active blood circulation in the intervertebral discs.

Kuznetsov and Lyapko applicator
An applicator is a mat or roller equipped with spikes or needles of various shapes.
The device provides a targeted effect on the skin, resulting in:
- Local blood circulation improves.
- Metabolic processes are accelerated.
- Bone and cartilage tissue is restored.
- The inflammatory process stops.
- Pain is reduced.
- Puffiness disappears.
Kuznetsov’s invention has a fabric base and plastic spikes. This applicator acts rather harshly on the surface of the skin, but due to this it has a high therapeutic effect.
Lyapko used a rubber base and metal needles, which are located at a closer distance. The use of this invention causes less discomfort. In addition to the mechanical effect, the healing effect is achieved by creating galvanic currents with needles that stimulate nerve endings.
Self-massage
Self-massage helps treat cervical osteochondrosis at home. Thanks to gentle pressure on the neck, salt deposits are prevented, blood supply and tissue nutrition are improved, and the intensity of pain is reduced. During the procedure, muscles relax, metabolic processes accelerate, and blood pressure stabilizes.
If you wish, you can visit a massage therapist in a clinic or do procedures at home. However, it is convenient to massage your neck on your own, having studied the basic techniques and identified the points that need to be worked on. It is also important to know which areas are best to avoid or act on them carefully.
The massage technique is quite simple, and it is quite possible to master it. The basic rules are:
- direction of movement - from the center to the periphery, that is, from the spinal column to the shoulders and back of the head;
- Massaging the cervical area is allowed only with the help of fingers, without using any devices;
- strong pressure is excluded: the influence must be delicate and gentle;
- the muscles of the back and sides of the neck are stroked, rubbed and kneaded;
- massage is performed in a sitting position;
- the session begins with stroking, continues with rubbing and kneading movements, and also ends with stroking;
- The duration of the procedure is 5-10 minutes.
If there are no contraindications and the approval of the attending physician, you can use the Kuznetsov applicator. This affordable and effective device is a roller made of fabric or oilcloth base with convex elements - round or square studded plates.
The applicator is easy to use - just place it under your head and lie on it. Soft needles penetrate the skin, increasing blood flow and affecting biologically active points of the neck. The duration of the procedure starts from a few minutes and gradually increases.
Shantz's neck collar
A soft and elastic anatomically shaped retainer is used to:
- Reduce neck muscle tension.
- Unload the upper spine.
- Provide warmth.
- Help consolidate the results of massage and manual therapy.
The Shants collar must be worn with the body in an upright position (standing or sitting). It should not be left to sleep at night. It is recommended to get used to wearing a collar gradually, starting from 20 minutes. Over time, the wearing period should reach 4 hours a day.
Diagnostic principles
Like any diagnosis in medicine, the diagnosis of osteochondrosis is established based on the patient’s complaints, medical history, clinical examination and auxiliary research methods. X-rays of the cervical spine are performed in direct and lateral projections, if necessary in special positions (with the mouth open).
In this case, specialists are interested in the height of the intervertebral discs and the presence of osteophytes. Among modern research methods, NMR and CT studies are used, which make it possible to most accurately verify the diagnosis. In addition to the listed methods of additional research, consultations with related specialists (cardiologist, ophthalmologist, neurosurgeon) may be necessary, and an examination by a neurologist is simply vital. A neurologist is involved in the treatment of osteochondrosis, so after examining the patient, he will, at his discretion, prescribe the necessary minimum examination.

Yoga
Thanks to yoga, the mobility of the affected areas of the spine significantly increases. Strengthened muscles are better supplied with blood and tissue nutrition improves.
It will be very useful to perform asanas such as:
- Ardha Matsyendrasana (back twist pose).
- Parivritta Trikonasana (triangle pose).
- Bhujagasana (power bend, lying on the stomach).
- Simhasana (lion pose).
Therapeutic exercises for osteochondrosis of the cervical spine
But it is special therapeutic exercises that help best with cervical osteochondrosis. Tested from my own experience. If you want to overcome this unpleasant disease, there is simply no other way. Thanks to gymnastics, the muscles surrounding the cervical spine are strengthened, leading to proper support for the joints and vertebrae.
With regular implementation, positive changes are observed. The normal patency of blood vessels is restored, which leads to the disappearance of pain, a general improvement in well-being, and restoration of normal functioning of the brain, and therefore the psyche. Those who want to get rid of all kinds of mental problems, such as panic attacks, depression, phobias, should also not forget about the physical cause of their ailments. And cervical osteochondrosis is one of such reasons.
Gymnastics confirms the fact that for normal functioning of the spine, you need to strengthen the muscles associated with it. There are dynamic gymnastics, as well as static exercises. Which exercises should be practiced depends on the severity and characteristics of the disease. But as practice shows, to achieve a positive effect, you need to practice both types.
Dynamic exercises
Dynamic exercises for the treatment of osteochondrosis of the cervical spine are simple movements and rotations of the head. But this apparent simplicity contains the key to getting rid of cervical osteochondrosis. This practice, when performed regularly, helps strengthen muscles and restore cartilage tissue, that is, intervertebral discs.
Also, without certain conditions, which we will talk about below, the effect of the practice will not only be insignificant, but may even be simply harmful.
- Tilt your head down, lowering your chin to your chest. We raise our heads and throw them back.
- Tilt your head left and right. The ear leans towards the shoulder of the same name.
- Turn without tilting to the right, to the left, keeping the axis of the neck vertical. That is, we turn our head to the right and look to our right, also to our left.
- Rotate your head clockwise and counterclockwise. (This exercise is careful, it is not suitable for everyone).
Often a person simply cannot turn his neck and says that he is in pain or uncomfortable. There are creaks and crackling sounds in the neck, as if sand is being ground there.
But over time, the “sand gets smaller”, the exercises become easier and easier, and after some time the person forgets that there were problems with the neck.
Of course, this does not happen immediately. For some, in a few weeks, months, for others, in six months, a year. Yes, there is no other way. You need to do the exercises for a long time and regularly, only then will there be a positive effect over time. It takes time for the neck to recover and it is naive to expect quick results; miracles do not happen. By quickly relieving pain with pills, you will not get rid of cervical osteochondrosis. To get rid of the disease you will have to work hard.
But if you apply special conditions, you will enjoy doing the exercises; they will not be a burden to you. Exercises should be performed slowly, using awareness. Only in this case there will be a positive effect and you will not harm yourself.
You need to start with a dozen repetitions in each direction and do it slowly, carefully without causing pain or discomfort. It is important at this time not to be distracted by extraneous thoughts, but to direct all attention to the sensations in the body. The neck is relaxed, you feel its muscles, they are not tense. As you move, you feel your neck stretching but not compressing. This way you turn on awareness and don’t injure your neck.
During mindfulness, you simply take a break from the daily hustle and bustle, as your attention is distracted from fussy thoughts and is on the sensations in your neck. Mindfulness itself is capable of miracles of healing.
You need to perform the exercises while sitting on a chair, gradually adding one or two movements a day, bringing it to about fifty in each direction. In some cases, when there is no pain, you can increase the pace. Also remember that you don't have to focus all your attention on the exercises. This way you won't feel your neck and won't get the positive effect. In this case, the number of repetitions should be approximate.
It happens that as a result of doing the exercises you lost awareness, violated the principle of caution and non-violence towards your body and injured your neck. For example, residual pain appeared. You need to stop performing the complex until the pain goes away, and also wait a few more days to allow your neck to recover. Only after this can you return to practice again.
Also, many do not recommend performing head rotation. If you have severe and chronic osteochondrosis, it is better to exclude the last exercise.
Static exercises
As practice shows, cervical osteochondrosis can also be successfully treated with static exercises, and often they help even better. People who performed them also got rid of problems such as dizziness, headaches, and mental disorders after a few weeks, months, six months, a year.
Static load is the simplest way to strengthen the neck muscles without movement. Indeed, often with large problems with the cervical vertebrae, any movement leads to pain and further injury. But if you can't move your neck, you can strengthen the muscles by passively using its weight, and this is done very simply.
So, what exercises are useful and effective? They are simple.
We lie on our backs and relax. Raise your head, lifting the back of your head from the floor about a centimeter. We hold the head suspended with the neck muscles until obvious fatigue. We only look up. We lower our heads.
Typically, the first exposure time is a few seconds; over time, the time increases. In any case, the time must be selected individually.
We do the same while lying on our stomach. Hands together, in front, place your head on your hands. We lift our heads off the floor. We lower our heads.
We do the same on the right side and on the left side.
To begin with, one repetition is enough, over time the exercise can be repeated up to 5 times.
It is also important to include awareness here. While holding the head, we direct attention not to the neck and imagine how it relaxes, even though the muscles are tense. It is very important. When we lower our head, take your time to complete the next repetition. Lie like this for a few seconds, also relaxing your neck, imagining how pleasant energy spreads inside it.
The exposure time is small at first, a few seconds. Over time, it can increase to a minute or even more.
Also, to get rid of cervical osteochondrosis, static exercises are used while sitting or standing, when we rest our hand on our head and try to use our neck muscles to resist this support.
In this video you can see how to perform this set of exercises.
So, in order to forget about cervical osteochondrosis and get rid of many unpleasant symptoms that significantly worsen our lives, you need to both open your neck with dynamic exercises and strengthen your neck muscles with static exercises. Do this regularly for a while. At the same time, do not forget about relaxing the neck, awareness, and a sense of proportion.
By training the neck muscles, we reduce the load on diseased intervertebral discs, increase blood flow, and restore their normal function.
You also need to remember that exercises for cervical osteochondrosis are used not only for treatment, but also for prevention.
Nutrition
Recommended foods include foods rich in healthy proteins and vitamins A, B, C, and D.
This:
- Lean meat, poultry, fish.
- Nuts.
- Vegetables, fruits, greens.
- Low fat dairy products.
- Eggs (chicken and quail - no more than 2 eggs per day).
- Legumes.
It is recommended to replace animal fats with unrefined vegetable oils.
There are many ways to treat cervical osteochondrosis - from the use of medications and traditional medicine to gymnastics and massage. The most effective is the simultaneous use of several techniques. Carrying out procedures at home must be agreed upon with a doctor so as not to aggravate the course of the disease.

What you can do at home yourself
Treatment of cervical osteochondrosis at home is a prerequisite that most doctors insist on. It is impossible to cope with the disease with medications and physical procedures alone; they only temporarily eliminate the symptoms. Regular, dosed physical activity, the use of self-massage techniques, therapeutic compresses and strengthening infusions can extend the period of remission.
By strictly following the instructions and following medical recommendations, you can achieve impressive results. Carrying out self-massage significantly saves money; using decoctions and infusions of herbs instead of certain medications reduces the negative impact of medications on the body.
At home, you can make compresses and lotions, massage your neck, and if necessary, wear a Shants fixing collar (splint).
Home therapy, like traditional treatment, helps to quickly relieve pain, normalize cerebral circulation, and improve sleep. With the help of available products, you can remove nervousness and irritability, stabilize blood pressure, and restore normal sensitivity in the cervical-collar region.
Symptoms of the disease and degree of osteochondrosis
Pain occurs as the disease progresses
The increase in symptoms of cervical osteochondrosis in women and men is a long process. From the moment of the onset of changes in the tissues of the intervertebral discs until the first signs of cervical osteochondrosis appear, more than one year may pass.
There is no difference in the symptoms of cervical osteochondrosis in men, women and children. The only difference: at a young age, the symptoms are not as pronounced as in older people.
It is the vague symptoms that cause the difficulties in the treatment of cervical osteochondrosis. A person does not see a doctor until severe symptoms of the disease appear that cause discomfort. This occurs at least 5 years after the onset of degeneration of the cartilage tissue of the intervertebral discs.
In the first years of development, osteochondrosis of the cervical spine is practically not accompanied by clinical manifestations. Perhaps only a slight feeling of numbness in the upper back after sleep or short-term muscle spasms during moments of psycho-emotional stress.
To accurately understand the signs of cervical osteochondrosis in men and women, one should consider the degrees of this disease, which characterize the severity of the pathological process in the intervertebral discs.
First (preclinical) degree of the disease: symptoms and features
With cervical osteochondrosis, symptoms and treatment depend on the stage of the pathological process. The first degree is called preclinical, since it has no characteristic clinical symptoms. Osteochondrosis can be recognized at this stage only through hardware diagnostics - changes in the discs are visible on an x-ray (not always) and are clearly visualized on MRI and CT.
At the first stage of the disease, the trophism (nutrition) of the intervertebral discs is disrupted. As the disease progresses, the elastic cartilage tissue thickens. The discs become harder, causing the vertebrae to lose mobility. This is how degenerative-dystrophic processes begin, leading to dysfunction of the cervical spine.
As a rule, symptoms become noticeable already at the second stage of the disease, but are so mild that they rarely bother a person. The first stage of the disease progresses to the next within a few years.
Symptoms of second degree osteochondrosis
The second degree of cervical osteochondrosis is characterized by an increase in muscle tone in the affected area
How cervical osteochondrosis can be cured depends on the severity of the disease. If the preclinical stage often goes unnoticed by the patient, the second degree of the disease acquires some symptoms that should alert the patient and force him to see a doctor.
Is it possible to completely cure cervical osteochondrosis? It depends on the severity of the pathological process. The earlier therapy is started, the more favorable the prognosis.
In the second stage of the disease, the discs between the vertebrae harden. The neck loses mobility, but in ordinary life this practically does not interfere with the patient. A characteristic symptom is an increase in muscle tone in the affected area. With prolonged physical activity, sudden movements of the head, after a long sleep, numbness and muscle hypertonicity may be observed. Sudden movements lead to acute pain. This is explained by the fact that spasmed muscles compress the nerve, causing severe pain. The pain can radiate to the shoulder blade, neck, and less commonly to the lower extremities. This variability in pain syndrome is due to the large number of nerve roots located in the cervical region.
The first signs of cervical osteochondrosis are the following symptoms:
- fast fatiguability;
- headache;
- dizziness after sleep;
- pain in the cervical spine with sudden movements;
- local numbness of the skin of the cervical region.
Typically, in the second stage of the disease, symptoms appear only occasionally. This is usually associated with severe fatigue or intense physical activity. Most patients do not pay due attention to mild ailments, expecting the discomfort to go away on its own. In general, this is what happens; symptoms rarely bother a person for more than a few hours and go away without taking special medications.
Features of third degree osteochondrosis
Symptoms of third degree osteochondrosis of the cervical spine are pronounced. If at the first stage of the disease changes are just beginning, the second degree is characterized by compaction of the disc tissue, then at the third stage of osteochondrosis, cracks and micro-tears of the fibrous ring of the disc occur. The formation of a hernia is possible - prolapse of the nucleus pulposus into the intervertebral space.
This is accompanied by impaired cerebral circulation, as the flattened discs strongly compress the spinal artery. A typical symptom is severe headache, frequent dizziness, and flickering of spots before the eyes.
With osteochondrosis of the third degree, there is a constant feeling of heaviness in the neck. The muscles are almost always in spasm, the person feels heaviness and aching pain. Staying in one position for a long time, straining the neck muscles, or sleeping on an uncomfortable pillow leads to local numbness of the skin or a severe attack of pain. You can feel the changes by palpation - the neck muscles become hard to the touch, pressure causes severe pain. A sign of cervical osteochondrosis in men is severe pain during exercise (women are less likely to load this part of the spine in everyday life).
Features of the fourth degree
A compressed nerve interferes with blood circulation and causes severe pain in the neck
The fourth stage of the disease is the most severe. In this case, irreversible changes occur in the structure of the disks. The pathological process spreads from the fibrous ring to the vertebrae. Signs of cervical osteochondrosis in this case are described by several syndromes - radicular, reflex, spinal syndrome. Severe pain along the compressed nerve and cerebrovascular accidents are observed. At this stage, the symptoms of cervical osteochondrosis are varied. Frequent myalgia (muscle pain), neuralgia, and migraines occur. The pain spreads to the chest, the patient may experience discomfort in the heart area, which is associated with intercostal neuralgia against the background of left-sided osteochondrosis.
Reasons for the development of the disease
The reasons for the development of cervical osteochondrosis are varied. First of all, the disease appears due to an incorrect lifestyle - physical inactivity, sedentary work, excess body weight.
In this case, the main cause of osteochondrosis of the cervical spine is poor circulation in this area. As a result, the nutrition of the tissues of the intervertebral discs deteriorates, which entails a change in their structure.
There are several factors contributing to the development of this disease:
- physical inactivity;
- weak muscle corset of the back;
- excess weight;
- neck injuries;
- stress;
- hypothermia;
- systemic connective tissue diseases (lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis).
Physical inactivity is one of the most important factors in the development of spinal column diseases. People who spend a lot of time in a sitting position experience osteochondrosis due to lack of physical activity. A lot here also depends on posture and back muscles. Incorrect position of the neck during long-term work at a desk leads to disruption of the nutrition of the intervertebral discs, which over time results in degeneration of cartilage tissue and the development of osteochondrosis. For this reason, the disease is often diagnosed in schoolchildren and students, since their daily activities involve sitting at a table or desk for many hours. Also, osteochondrosis is often diagnosed in office workers and all people who spend a lot of time at the computer.
Weak back muscles are another factor that provokes the development of this disease. To maintain posture and correct head position, developed muscles in the back of the neck and thoracic region are necessary. If a person slouches, does not play sports, and has never strengthened the muscle corset with special exercises, there is a high chance of developing osteochondrosis.
Excess weight is one of the main factors in the development of diseases of the musculoskeletal system. Due to the large body weight, the load on the spine and legs is distributed unevenly, as a result, some parts of the back are more strained. Most often it is the neck that suffers.
Osteochondrosis can be a consequence of muscle spasm. This is often associated with frequent stress. Many people feel how, during psycho-emotional stress, the muscles of the neck literally “stiffen” - this is both the cause of the development of osteochondrosis and one of the first symptoms of this disease.
Note! Stress is a dangerous condition that negatively affects the entire body, including the musculoskeletal system. You need to be able to deal with stress. If you cannot cope on your own, it is recommended to consult a doctor - a neurologist, psychologist or psychotherapist. Avoiding stress will help you maintain good health for many years.
As a rule, the development of osteochondrosis occurs under the influence of several provoking factors. Many doctors consider osteochondrosis not an independent disease, but a natural consequence of an unhealthy lifestyle. Constant fatigue, stress, incorrect body position while sleeping or working at the computer, excess weight and bad habits - all this harms the health of the spinal column. As you know, a strong back is the key to good health and longevity. Despite the fact that osteochondrosis is not life-threatening, this disorder can significantly worsen overall health and cause the development of other diseases, so it is important to promptly identify the disease and undergo comprehensive treatment.
Massage
To speed up the healing process, it is necessary to additionally massage. You can also do a neck massage yourself. When performing a massage, muscle tension is relieved, which affects people who are constantly exposed to stress. Also, with the help of massage, you can improve blood circulation in the discs that are located between the vertebrae. You can perform a massage using stroking, rubbing, tapping, kneading movements. If possible, it is better to make an appointment with a specialist who knows how to properly perform therapeutic massage.
Preventive actions
In order to prevent the development of cervical osteochondrosis, the following are recommended:
- Sports activities (the ideal option is to go to the pool).
- Introduce foods enriched with calcium and magnesium into your diet.
- Warm up several times throughout the day, especially if you have a sedentary job.
- In accordance with the requirements, replace the pillow (buy a low one) and the mattress (you need a fairly hard one). Watch your neck posture while sleeping: your neck should bend at least 15 degrees.
- Take hot showers for at least 10 minutes throughout the day.
- For people who do not like playing sports, doctors recommend periodically attending a yoga class.
- You should not exercise on exercise machines, as this can lead to a deterioration in your health.
Why is osteochondrosis dangerous?
Before we consider in detail how you can get rid of cervical osteochondrosis, you should understand the severity of this disease. Treatment for osteochondrosis in the cervical spine must begin at an early stage, when the situation can be corrected using non-drug methods. The first two degrees of the disease themselves are relatively safe, but the pathology quickly progresses and leads to complications.
Main complications:
- cervical migraine;
- intracranial hypertension;
- compression of the vertebral artery;
- radicular syndrome;
- myalgia.
Cervical migraine develops due to impaired cerebral circulation. This complication is observed in osteochondrosis starting from the second stage. Any sudden movement leads to compression of the blood vessels, which causes cerebral circulatory failure. The result is a migraine headache, which is accompanied by an aura. Quite often, starting from the early stage of the disease, a person awakens to meteosensitivity.
Changes in the structure and height of the intervertebral discs can lead to compression of the vertebral artery. The result is multiple complications - from increased intracranial pressure to cerebral hypoxia due to insufficient blood supply. Symptoms include dizziness, headache, blurred vision, and hearing impairment. This is a dangerous complication that requires timely treatment.
Another common complication of osteochondrosis is radicular syndrome, manifested by pain of various localizations. The cause is compression of the spinal nerve roots by altered discs. The same complication is observed with intervertebral hernia.
How to treat cervical osteochondrosis
The described condition of the spine is a very serious pathology, which, if neglected, leads to disability, and as a result of profound disorders of cerebral circulation, to death. For this reason, you should not self-medicate if such symptoms appear. Osteochondrosis is treated in a hospital and at home only as prescribed by a doctor. In the initial stages, treatment of cervical osteochondrosis is conservative, including medications: non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, anesthetics, hormonal agents, vitamin complexes, chondroprotectors - all this relieves inflammation, pain, improves the trophism of soft tissues and cartilage of the vertebrae.
In the acute period, drugs are prescribed in the form of injections; as the pain subsides, the patient switches to tablets. Physiotherapy, massage, and physical therapy exercises, usually prescribed at the stage of remission, are added to the courses of medications. In difficult cases, osteochondrosis is treated with surgery.
In this video you can see what a short exercise therapy course for beginners looks like:
Symptoms
The manifestations of cervical osteochondrosis are very similar to many diseases, which makes diagnosis difficult. Their manifestations depend on which nerve roots are being compressed; in addition, many symptoms are associated with impaired blood circulation in the brain. Despite the wide range of symptoms, a number of the most common ones can be identified. Their appearance and intensification will depend on the degree of development of the disease. Here they are arranged by frequency of occurrence.
Attention! You can find out how to treat lumbar osteochondrosis here.
Headaches with cervical osteochondrosis
One of the first, most persistent and most common symptoms of cervical osteochondrosis is a migraine-type headache. It will respond well to analgesics, but as the disease progresses, its intensity becomes higher and more difficult to relieve.
Important! The pain can be located as a pulsation in the temples and the back of the head, can affect the parietal region, and radiate to the parietal bone.
Pain in the neck
Usually weak at first, pain in the neck appears only when you touch the affected area; later the pain can radiate to the back of the head, shoulder, or arm (this depends on which nerve endings are pinched). At the same time, it appears when turning or tilting the head, sudden movement of the body, becomes constant, and has increasing intensity.
Limitation of range of motion, crunching
Another symptom of cervical osteochondrosis is limited movement of the head and neck; it is difficult for the patient to turn his head, there is no way to do this fully, it is impossible to tilt his head forward or backward. When turning, a characteristic crunching sound appears.
Arm weakness
If the nerve roots responsible for the innervation of the upper extremities are damaged, weakness in the arms appears; in severe cases, paralysis can occur.
Numbness of the hands or areas of the body
When the roots responsible for sensitivity are compressed, there is a loss of sensation in the hands, fingers, or numbness in certain areas. In advanced forms of the disease, paralysis (complete or partial) of the arms and entire body is possible. This again depends on which nerves are affected.
Decreased hearing and vision
This disease is characterized by such symptoms as decreased hearing and vision, numbness of the lips and tongue. These organs are in close proximity and are the first to suffer from insufficient oxygen supply to the brain.
Dizziness with cervical osteochondrosis
With cervical osteochondrosis, one of the most unpleasant symptoms will be dizziness; sometimes it can be accompanied by loss of coordination; in some cases, fainting and nausea are present. These symptoms are associated with impaired cerebral circulation as a result of compression of arteries and blood vessels.

Homeopathic remedies
Homeopathy is a common remedy in the treatment of cervical osteochondrosis. Herbal preparations always contain a large amount of useful microelements and biologically active substances. They contain a lot of vitamins, and they act gently and effectively. Most homeopathic medicines are based on plant extracts and herbal extracts. At the same time, only environmentally friendly products are used as starting materials. Their most important advantage is naturalness.
With their help you can:
- restore cartilage tissue;
- activate immunity;
- improve blood circulation in the cervical region.
Stages of development of cervical osteochondrosis
According to modern ideas about the mechanism of development of the disease, three stages of the process of disc degeneration are conventionally distinguished:
- Dysfunction or initial. The spinal disc becomes vulnerable to mechanical stress. Cracks appear on it, which over time turn into protrusions of cartilage tissue - hernias.
- Instability or intermediate. Pathological mobility develops in the spinal segment. The spine is unable to adequately protect the neural and vascular structures located in its bony canals. Stage of pronounced clinical signs of cervical osteochondrosis.
- Restabilization or final. The destroyed disc is replaced with fibrous tissue, instability of the spine and intervertebral hernia disappear. However, a sharp restriction of the mobility of adjacent vertebrae develops. And changes that have occurred in the bone structures of the vertebrae cause stenosis (narrowing) of the spinal canal with specific neurological symptoms.
Understanding these processes and studying the symptoms or manifestations of the disease will allow us to more competently answer the main question that arises for many: how to treat cervical chondrosis?
Why does osteochondrosis occur?
People of all ages get sick. In recent years, there has been an increase in the disease among young people. Both men and women get sick equally often. Although, it should be noted that women, as a rule, have more severe symptoms of the disease.
Cervical osteochondrosis develops slowly. Several years may pass from the onset of the pathological process to the appearance of the first symptoms.
In elderly people, osteochondrosis of the neck is often accompanied by other degenerative lesions of the cervical spine (CS): uncovertebral arthrosis, spondylosis, etc.
Recipes for internal use
Traditional methods of treating cervical osteochondrosis offer many recipes for getting rid of the disease, which must be taken orally according to a specific schedule.
How do such drugs help general therapy, since even the attending physician usually prescribes medications and ointments only for topical use?
Infusions and decoctions help relieve inflammation, improve general blood circulation and restore immune strength. All this has a beneficial effect on the condition of the body, and this is the best way to treat osteochondrosis.
Here are some recipes for decoctions:
- Grind cranberries (370 g) and garlic cloves (150 g) into a mushy state, and then place the mixture in a jar. We also add honey in the amount of 800 grams and stir our medicine until it takes on a homogeneous structure. Take 5 g of the composition daily. It is allowed to drink tea, water and other drinks.
- You can remove salt deposits using traditional methods; you will need sunflower root for this. To do this, grind the thoroughly washed root, dry it and brew it in water at the rate of 150 g to 2.7 liters of liquid. We boil the broth and drink a glass every day instead of tea.
- The monastery collection, which includes speedwell, string, violet and wheatgrass root, has excellent reviews. These ingredients are taken in 20 grams, and burdock root in the amount of 25 g. For a liter jar of boiling water you will need 2 tbsp. spoons of dry mixture. The last one is boiled in this water for 15 minutes.
- For the next recipe you will need mint, licorice root, calendula and yarrow. 1-2 tbsp of each herb. spoons. This mixture is poured with water (1 liter) and boiled in a water bath for half an hour. After filtering, the course of administration is as follows: 100 ml 3 times a day.
Infusions
These folk remedies differ from decoctions in that they take a little longer to prepare. Infusion time is necessary for the composition to become more effective.

There are many reasons for this dangerous disease, although it is still unknown exactly why osteochondrosis occurs in a particular area. Among the factors that provoke cervical osteochondrosis will be:
Lifestyle
This is the most voluminous factor in both quantitative and qualitative terms. This should include:
Attention! You can learn about the treatment of thoracic osteochondrosis in our article.
- sedentary work pattern;
- prolonged stay in a tense or uncomfortable position for significant periods of time;
- small physical loads on the spine (this helps to weaken the muscle corset);
- too much stress on the spine.
Today, a very large number of people are susceptible to the listed factors in the occurrence of this disease due to the existing model of social life and social behavior.
Injuries
Spinal injuries in 90% of cases are accompanied by cervical osteochondrosis. Often it does not occur immediately after injury, but after a certain time. Here the main component of the occurrence will be the damaged integrity of the ridge.
Hormonal imbalances
This factor can arise already in adolescence, during the restructuring of the child’s body. This type of osteochondrosis can be successfully treated.
If osteochondrosis occurs due to menopause or diseases that change hormonal levels (diabetes mellitus, multiple sclerosis), treatment will be symptomatic.
Genetic predisposition
This reason almost always arises as an accompaniment to others. Since genetic predisposition itself is not the basis for the disease, but it is of great importance in the event of other factors.
Prevention
To prevent osteochondrosis of the SHO, a person should adhere to simple but extremely important rules:
- Fight excess weight (if any). For men and women who experience back problems, the critical excess is 10 kg.
- Reducing the load on the spine. If a person cannot completely eliminate heavy physical activity, then weights should be carried alternately in the hands. After the load, you should lie down or hang on the horizontal bar.
- Using an orthopedic pillow.
- Prevention of a sedentary lifestyle. In many cases, the first signs of the disease in men can be eliminated by exercising.
- Formation of proper nutrition.
About diagnostic methods
If one or a number of symptoms of cervical osteochondrosis occur, it is better to consult a doctor for a diagnosis. There are several methods for diagnosing osteochondrosis, the most informative among them will be:
- CT scan;
- Magnetic resonance imaging;
- Dopplerography of blood vessels;
- The most commonly used is radiography.
For the diagnosis of osteochondrosis in the early stages, radiography will be of little information. Dopplerography of blood vessels is carried out in difficult cases, when severe symptoms occur: loss of sensitivity over large areas, paralysis, fainting.
Important! Successful treatment is possible just in the early stages of the disease and it depends on a correct diagnosis.
The task of the therapeutic course
If the presence of cervical osteochondrosis is confirmed, the doctor will prescribe an appropriate course of treatment, which, first of all, should be aimed at eliminating the symptoms of this pathological condition. To achieve maximum effect, therapy must be comprehensive, so doctors often prescribe different groups of drugs aimed at relieving pain, improving blood circulation in the affected area, as well as regenerating affected tissues.
Exercises for cervical osteochondrosis
Anesthesia
To eliminate pain, which is an integral sign of osteochondrosis, doctors prescribe muscle relaxants, the action of which is aimed at eliminating antispasmodic contractions . To relieve the inflammatory process in the cervical spine, anti-inflammatory drugs (non-hormonal or hormonal) are used. To reduce the sensitivity of nerve endings, doctors use conventional analgesics.
Pharmacological effects of muscle relaxants
Improved blood flow
Medicines are prescribed to improve blood supply to the affected areas of the body, which makes it possible to stop degenerative processes in this area or at least slow them down. Also, regular use of such medications helps to dilate blood vessels, thereby restoring normal blood clotting.
Taking pills for osteochondrosis
Slowing down destruction processes
As noted earlier, osteochondrosis (cervical or lumbar) is accompanied by the destruction of the cartilage tissue of the spine, but to slow down these processes, doctors resort to the use of chondroprotectors - effective medications based on chondroitin . As a rule, they need to be used for a long time, since the desired therapeutic effect can be achieved no earlier than after 5-6 months. As a supplement, antioxidants are prescribed that neutralize the negative effects of hypoxia (a pathological process caused by a lack of oxygen).
Chondroprotectors slow down the destruction of cartilage tissue
Factors provoking the appearance of the disease
Cervical osteochondrosis can develop under the influence of the following factors:
- excessive weight;
- sedentary work, inactivity;
- previous spinal column injuries;
- mental disorders, nervous strain, stress;
- poor physical fitness;
- curvature of the spine, scoliosis, incorrect posture;
- incorrect body position that has become a habit;
- tension in the neck and back during work;
- tendencies at the genetic level;
- unusual physical tension for the body, increased activity;
- improper nutrition.
The cervical region of the spine is subject to increased loads, which the cervical muscles try to bring to balance during exposure to the above-mentioned sources. This provokes the appearance of muscle spasms, which disrupts the transport of blood throughout the body. As a result, the formation of anatomical damage is noted.
Treatment Goals
Before starting treatment of the disease, you should correctly diagnose cervical osteochondrosis, during which a specialist will be able to determine the degree of osteochondrosis and, depending on it, prescribe adequate therapy.
All treatment, whatever type is chosen, is aimed at:
- Stop attacks of pain.
- Eliminate inflammatory processes.
- Stop the degenerative destruction of bone structures.
- Remove excess tension in muscle structures.
Eliminating pain
If the pain from cervical osteochondrosis has become excruciating, and it is not possible to see a doctor at the moment, then self-treatment is allowed for a short period of time. To relieve pain, you can use the following medication:
- Diclofenac – relieves pain and relieves inflammation. The drug has contraindications for use.
- Ibuprofen can effectively reduce pain at the site of its localization. Not able to influence the course and development of the disease.
- Indomethacin is similar in effect to the two drugs above, but in addition it also has an antipyretic effect.
Local remedies are used by applying to the area in which discomfort appears, bordering on pain. Such medications include Voltaren, Ketonal, Nurofen - all of them come in the form of a cream or gel.
Reduced muscle spasms
A muscle spasm is an uncontrollable condition in which a muscle or group of muscles becomes tense. If such a condition occurs with cervical osteochondrosis, it usually lasts only a few minutes, after which it goes away on its own.
When relapses of this condition are observed, only special physical procedures and taking medications for osteochondrosis will help eliminate spasms.
When a spasm causes discomfort, it can be quickly relieved using simple massage techniques or self-massage. To do this, you should learn a few rules:
- You need to massage not only the neck area, but also the shoulders.
- Movements are only downward, that is, from the head down to the back.
- Using two hands will enhance the result.
Reducing swelling
Swelling of the face may be one of the manifestations of cervical osteochondrosis. This condition is caused by pinching of the cervical vessels.
We definitely need to recommend visiting a qualified doctor in order to receive competent advice. After all, swelling of the face can be a manifestation of another, more serious disease.
If the swelling is caused specifically by osteochondrosis, then to reduce its manifestation the following should be recommended:
- Physiotherapy.
- Massages.
- Acupuncture.
- Physical education.
In severe cases, the doctor may prescribe vasodilators that will help normalize internal circulation, thereby eliminating oxygen starvation of organs and tissues.
Improved blood supply
The most effective ways to combat the lack of blood supply in osteochondrosis are:
- Physiotherapeutic procedures - electrophoresis, sound waves, UV radiation, laser exposure to the affected area.
- Home exercises, including gymnastics for osteochondrosis for the upper body. Execution must be regular, otherwise there will be no effect.
- Drug treatment should be prescribed exclusively by a doctor and may include vasodilators, antioxidants, nootropics, diuretics, histaminergics, venotonics.
- Traditional medicine.
Maintaining a nutritious diet. Such a diet must include foods such as fruits and berries, raw vegetables, nuts and seeds, healthy fatty acids, high-quality proteins, and sea fish.

Tissue repair
It is necessary to restore cartilage in case of cervical osteochondrosis, as this will help stop its further destruction. To do this, it is advisable to include foods rich in glucosamine and chondroitin in your diet. These include cartilage tissue, poultry and beef, hard cheeses, red fish, viziga - a chord of salmon and sturgeon containing cartilage.
You can also recommend including supplements containing glucosamine and chondroitin in your daily diet.
Accelerates tissue regeneration and prolongs the analgesic effect
In order to enhance metabolism, enhance blood flow and oxygen exchange, it is recommended to give the body moderate, but daily physical activity, which will stimulate metabolic processes.
Diagnostics
To determine how to treat osteochondrosis of the cervical spine, you should contact a doctor who is a specialist in this field and undergo a diagnosis. When going to a medical facility, visit a general practitioner who will refer you to a specialist (this may be an osteopath, neurologist or vertebrologist).
The following methods can be used for diagnosis:
- Radiography . This version of the study is useful in the first stages of the development of the disease, when only cracks and slight changes in texture are observed.
- Computed tomography (CT) . This diagnostic method allows you to determine the presence of changes in the vertebrae. But it is not possible to determine the size of the hernia and the degree of compression of the vertebrae.
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) . An ideal option for diagnosing osteochondrosis of the cervical spine, since all changes in the structure are clearly visible, it is possible to determine the direction of growth of the hernia and its size.
- Ultrasound duplex scanning . Helps determine if there are blood flow disturbances that interfere with normal circulation in the cervical vertebral area.
After carrying out diagnostic measures and a thorough examination by a specialist, the doctor will determine how to treat osteochondrosis of the spine in the neck area. The choice of treatment depends on the stage of development of the disease, the presence of concomitant pathologies, contraindications to the use of certain drugs, procedures, and exercises. Self-medication before consulting a doctor can aggravate the problem, lead to complications, and recovery will be delayed, more difficult, and longer.
How to cure osteochondrosis?
This type of spinal disease requires medical intervention
How best to deal with cervical osteochondrosis - only a doctor can answer this question. There is no universal treatment regimen for cervical osteochondrosis; it all depends on the characteristics of the disease in a particular patient.
Patients often ask which doctors treat cervical osteochondrosis. Typically, the primary diagnosis is made by a general practitioner or neurologist, to whom patients turned with complaints of pain in the cervical spine. To make a diagnosis, it is necessary to take a radiograph of the neck in three projections and an MRI, and check for the presence of Neri’s symptom. The method of treating cervical osteochondrosis will depend on the results of the examination; therapy is selected by a neurologist.
How exactly cervical osteochondrosis is treated depends on the stage of development of degenerative changes in the discs. At the initial stage of the disease, special physical exercise will help both get rid of the symptoms of osteochondrosis in the cervical region and prevent further spread of the pathological process.
Treatment methods for osteochondrosis are different. Complex therapy includes:
- drug treatment;
- exercise therapy;
- physiotherapeutic procedures;
- manual therapy.
Symptoms and treatment of osteochondrosis depend on the severity of pathological changes in the cervical spine. Treatment for neck osteochondrosis should be prescribed by a doctor; self-medication will not bring results and can be dangerous.
Medicines
The first thing to do for cervical osteochondrosis is to eliminate pain and muscle spasm; This is the first aid to the patient. For this purpose, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, analgesics and muscle relaxants are used. As a rule, this allows you to relieve discomfort in a matter of hours. Relieving muscle spasm in itself is an effective treatment method, as it restores nerve conduction and blood circulation in the cervical region.
How to treat cervical osteochondrosis in the future depends on the degree of development of pathological changes. Doctors often prescribe:
- B vitamins to restore nerve conduction;
- chondroprotectors to improve the nutrition of cartilage tissue of intervertebral discs;
- nootropics to improve cerebral circulation;
- agents that improve the rheological properties of blood;
- sedatives to relieve stress.
Not all of the listed groups of drugs are advisable to use at different stages of the disease. Your doctor will select the exact treatment methods for cervical osteochondrosis.
Exercise therapy
Therapeutic exercise copes well with osteochondrosis at the initial stage of development
Therapeutic exercise is the most effective treatment for cervical osteochondrosis at the initial stage. Osteochondrosis in children and adults occurs due to weak back muscles, so this treatment is aimed not only at eliminating the symptoms, but also at eliminating the cause of the disease.
Therapeutic gymnastics classes take place in a special clinic room. Exercises are selected individually for each person and are performed under the supervision of a doctor.
Whether cervical osteochondrosis can be treated depends on how quickly the person consults a doctor. The first degree of the disease can be cured by gymnastics alone.
Symptoms of osteochondrosis of the cervical vertebrae disappear after just a few such sessions, as muscle spasm decreases.
Physiotherapy
Chronic osteochondrosis, the symptoms of which may hardly bother a person, is treated with physiotherapy. This method is aimed at restoring normal nutrition to the tissues of the intervertebral discs. Electrophoresis with nicotinic acid is usually used to dilate blood vessels and improve blood circulation. This treatment method relieves the symptoms of cervical osteochondrosis with radicular syndrome and migraine, as it reduces nerve compression and improves cerebral circulation.
The main symptoms of cervical osteochondrosis can be eliminated by magnetotherapy or exposure to heat. Just 10-15 procedures will normalize trophism in the cervical spine and relieve the symptoms of the disease.
Other methods
Acupuncture is a treatment method that involves influencing active points using thin needles.
Clinics offer various methods of treating cervical osteochondrosis. One of the promising areas is acupuncture, or acupuncture. This method helps to quickly eliminate neurological pain due to pathologies of the spinal column. Headaches with cervical osteochondrosis go away in just a few acupuncture sessions.
In the vast majority of cases, complex therapy includes a course of massage. Manual therapy eliminates muscle spasms, improves blood circulation, and strengthens the muscle corset.
For osteochondrosis, it is recommended to undergo a course of therapeutic massage twice a year for preventive purposes.
How long it takes to treat cervical osteochondrosis depends on the severity of changes in the discs. Typically, the patient is prescribed 15-20 sessions of manual therapy and physiotherapy, but exercise therapy must be done on an ongoing basis.
Surgical intervention
Surgical treatment is practiced only for damage to the fibrous ring of the disc and to eliminate intervertebral hernia, if there is a radicular syndrome that cannot be eliminated by other methods. Otherwise, conservative treatment is practiced.
