Imudon: instructions for use, indications, reviews and analogues

The body's immune system fights pathogenic microorganisms and promotes the treatment and prevention of infectious diseases.

A special role is played by the local immunity of the oral mucosa - it acts as the main protective barrier against the penetration of bacteria and viruses through the oral cavity.

To improve the functioning of the immune system, immunostimulating drugs are used, which include Imudon. The product is normally tolerated by the body and is approved for use in childhood.

What does it help with?

Imudon is used when preventive measures and treatment of infectious and inflammatory throat diseases are required. These include:

  • Inflammation of the pharynx (acute or chronic) – pharyngitis;
  • Tonsillitis (chronic inflammation of the tonsils);
  • Inflammation of the tongue, called glossitis;
  • Periodontitis, which is an infection of the gum tissue that supports the teeth;
  • Periodontal disease, deeply affecting the periodontal tissues; the same periodontitis, but more aggressively expressed;
  • Stomatitis, affecting the mucous membrane in the mouth with painful ulcers;
  • Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums.

Pharmaceutical development is the main fighter against dysbiosis that has developed in the mouth. Infection of the mucous membrane during tooth extraction procedures and implantation of artificial analogues of tooth roots. Treats ulcerations caused by injury from uncomfortable dentures.

Indications for use include preparation for surgery to remove tonsils and postoperative recovery time.

The off-season is considered the cold season: the population becomes massively infected with an acute respiratory viral infection - ARVI. And there, tracheitis and bronchitis are not far from ear, nose and throat diseases. The role of an assistant to weakened immunity in the antiviral fight is “captured” by the described medication. While fighting pathogenic microorganisms, Imudon does not harm the beneficial microflora “living” on the mucous membranes of the pharynx.

When is it indicated to take Imudon during pregnancy?

Imudon is prescribed for the treatment of bacterial diseases of a dental and otolaryngological nature:

  • glossitis;
  • pharyngitis;
  • periodontal disease;
  • oral dysbiosis;
  • periodontitis;
  • all forms of stomatitis;
  • tonsillectomy;
  • unpleasant odor from the mouth;
  • gingivitis of various etiologies;
  • infection of the nasopharynx;
  • tonsillitis in any form.

On a note! In dentistry, Imudon is often used to prevent infectious complications after tooth extraction or as a result of injuries from dentures.

What does Imudon look like?

The medicine is produced in the form of “sucking” white (or almost white), sometimes with a slightly “marbled” tint, a smooth glossy surface of tablets, similar to flattened cylinders with beveled sections.

The tablets are sold in flexible plastic packaging from which the “pills” are pressed out. They have a faint mint smell.

For children

Since the tablets must be dissolved, they are prescribed only from 3 years of age. It is quite difficult to explain to a small child that they cannot be chewed. In this regard, there is no way to control the correct intake of tablets, therefore, you should not expect a positive result.

It should also be taken into account that in children under 3 years of age the immune system has not yet been formed, and drugs of similar action will disrupt this process.

Imudon should be taken by children aged 3 to 6 years under adult supervision.

How to take Imudon

The regimen for taking the medication depends on the purpose of use (prevention, treatment) and the age of the patient. For children 3–14 years old suffering from acute or worsened chronic inflammation of the throat, it is recommended to dissolve 6 tablets per day at intervals of an hour or two.

Preventive goals for patients of this age require a similar daily dosage of tablets.

The intake rate is the same for adolescents over 14 years of age and adults. Acute cases require dissolving tablets 8 times a day with a 1-2 hour break.

The prophylactic dose, which prevents exacerbation of dental and ENT diseases, is limited to six daily doses, with the same two-hour interval.

For better effectiveness of the medication, pharmacists recommend dissolving the tablets after meals. After taking the drug, you should not gargle or drink liquids for at least an hour.

Reception scheme

The tablets should be kept on the tongue or behind the cheek, without chewing or drinking liquid, otherwise the therapeutic effect will be significantly reduced.

After taking Imudon, you should refrain from eating for 30 minutes and do not rinse your mouth for an hour.

The course of treatment for acute conditions is on average 7-10 days, and use for preventive purposes lasts no more than 20 days. If the child’s condition and well-being do not improve, you need to contact your pediatrician and replace the drug with another medicine. Preventive courses of taking Imudon can be repeated no more than 4 times a year.

Contraindications

In all package inserts with instructions for use, the first contraindication is the increased sensitivity of the body to the drug and its components. This can trigger allergies.

A special group consists of people suffering from autoimmune diseases. The most well-known on this list are systemic lupus erythematosus, type 1 diabetes mellitus, multiple sclerosis, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Due to the lack of data confirmed by clinical experiments regarding the use of Imudon by women during pregnancy, nursing mothers during lactation, breastfeeding, the mentioned category of patients at these important moments in life, pharmacists do not recommend treatment with the described drug.

Composition and release form

The drug we are considering is produced in one single form - small round white lozenges with a pleasant mint aroma.

Such tablets are placed in metal blisters, 8 pieces in each. In pharmacies you can purchase this medicine in cardboard boxes containing 3 or 5 blisters. The main active components of Imudon are lysates of the following bacteria:

  • streptococci;
  • Klebsiella;
  • corynebacteria;
  • lactobacilli;
  • fusobacteria;
  • candid;
  • enterococci;
  • Staphylococcus aureus.

Lysates are scientifically obtained bacterial particles that, when entering the body, cannot cause disease, but fully activate immune cells.

Excipients are: lactose, glycine, mannitol, sodium saccharinate, sodium bicarbonate, sodium deoxycholate, sodium methiolate, citric acid, mint powder, povidone, magnesium stearate.

Side effects

There have been several cases of allergic reactions, expressed by the appearance of urticaria - rash, blisters, angioedema.

Erythema nodosum, which develops while taking the drug, is an inflammatory lesion of the skin and subcutaneous blood vessels. But such facts happen very rarely in medical practice. This also applies to hemorrhagic vasculitis, also associated with vascular damage, and thrombocytopenia - a sharp decrease in the number of platelets, leading to increased bleeding.

For people susceptible to allergies, the described drug is prescribed with no less caution than antibiotics.

Quite rarely, but an unexpected reaction to this medicine from the stomach and intestines occurs, resulting in troubles - from diarrhea, nausea, vomiting to abdominal pain.

The composition of the active substance, in addition to bacterial lysates, contains sodium salts, the use of which can aggravate existing kidney problems and hypertension.

Imudon: basic information about the drug

The drug belongs to the group of immunostimulants. They are synthetic and natural. Imudon is of natural origin. It contains lysates (separate parts destroyed in a special way) of harmful microbes. The raw materials for special processing are the most common pathogens of the upper respiratory tract (pneumococci, Haemophilus influenzae, fungi, which cause inflammation in 70-80% of cases). In this group of drugs, a distinction is made:

  1. Systemic action lysates – Ribomunil, Bronchomunal;
  2. Locally acting lysates – Imudon and IRS-19.

How does Imudon work? Schematically it looks like this:

  • dead debris (lysates), once on the surface of the oral mucosa, causes immune cells to sound the alarm and mobilize to fight;
  • active cell reproduction begins and the immune system begins to work with redoubled force, cleaning the surface of any harmful microbes (a kind of antigenic challenge). This is not difficult to do, because there is no pathogen, but only traces of its vital activity are present.

That is, there is a kind of vaccination (vaccine) of local significance.

Do not forget that lysates can often cause an allergic reaction!

To understand why it is necessary to modulate immunity and the role of Imudon in this process, let’s make a small digression.

In medicine, there is a special area dedicated to immunology and a separate doctor, an immunologist, deals with this. Our immunity is a complex system that involves a huge number of cells and factors that work harmoniously and interchangeably. Laboratory testing of the state of immunity does not always show pathology. The fact is that the weakened function of one part of the immune response is often taken over by other parts: this is how the body tries to correct the situation. Our intervention can only harm and break this fragile system.

In most cases, pathology is not associated with the functioning of the immune system, but with what surrounds and harms it. Looking for this cause is a thankless and difficult task, so doctors limit themselves to advice to correct the immune system, which, in principle, copes with its function. Prescribing immunomodulators or stimulants only makes sense where there is an imbalance of immune cells. If the cell ratio is normal, then the treatment will be useless or, conversely, will give an unnecessary foreign antigenic load, which is extremely undesirable for pregnant women.

Treatment must be approached wisely: it is worth conducting a laboratory assessment of immunity, looking at which link is lame, and only then prescribing treatment. However, none of the doctors do this, because it is easier to just take medications. During pregnancy, it is better not to take unnecessary medications, so as not to be surprised later why the child has autoimmune aggression.

Drug analogues

Imudon is well tolerated by patients of any age. Many people are bothered by the low cost of the medicine. And no one has canceled the possibility of autoimmune diseases. Therefore, a natural question often arises about the availability of cheaper, but no less effective analogues of this necessary medicine.

There are no analogues that are completely identical in structure. A number of drugs are similar in action, but have a different composition.

A similar effect - both immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory - is produced by the homeopathic remedy Anaferon, produced in the form of chewable tablets that are sweetish in taste. Its price is significantly lower than that of Imudon.

A children's version of the mentioned drug is also produced. It can be given even to infants, but strictly in the dosage determined by the pediatrician, although the instructions express the concept of “overdose” laconically: “no cases have been registered.” The baby’s tablet is dissolved in a tablespoon of water at room temperature. Contrary to the wishes of many parents who consider the dosage form of a “suppository” more convenient, Anaferon of this type (unlike Viferon) is not available.

For sore throat, sore throat, stomatitis, the medication can be replaced with Lyzobact, which not only is not a direct analogue of the drug being described, but generally works according to a completely different system. Here the main role is played not by bacterial lysates, but by the bactericidal enzyme lysozyme. Its effect is reinforced by the powerful stimulating effect of vitamin B6. It is correctly believed that the main thing is not the mechanism of action, but what result is achieved.

According to the mechanism of action and composition, Imudon is similar to the drug IRS-19. But the medicines differ in the form of release, method of application, and purposes: if the first is “responsible” for the mouth and pharynx, then the spray is used in the treatment and prevention of inflammatory diseases of the nose and possible post-inflammatory complications.

The manufacturing technology of the drugs Broncho-munal and Respibron is different from Imudon, but it is also appropriate to classify them as analogues of the latter. Broncho-munal is available in capsules. If it is difficult for the patient to swallow the capsule whole, the shell can be opened and the contents diluted with liquid - water, tea, juice.

An important feature of Broncho-munal is its compatibility with other drugs, including antibiotics and cough medicines.

Ten tablets are enough for a course of treatment with Respibron, and their one-time daily dose is very convenient. This reliable protection against influenza viruses is very affordable and does not require a prescription.

The immunostimulant Derinat, in addition to its not too expensive price, has proven effective when used locally. The drug is available in ampoules for injection and in the form of a solution used for rinsing the mouth, irrigation, applying medicinal applications, and as nasal drops.

Ribomunil (in Latin Ribomunyl) is available in tablets and granules. A solution is prepared from the granules and taken orally. The last option is convenient for children.

The patient is not recommended to look for cheap analogues of Imudon - this is self-medication. Only a medical specialist can select a suitable analogue of the drug.

How to replace Imudon during pregnancy

Since the drug Imudon may pose a certain danger during pregnancy, it can be replaced with safer and gentler options.

Powerful immunostimulating and antibiotic drugs are not allowed during this period.

To treat stomatitis and other diseases of the oral cavity, you can regularly rinse with Lakalut solution or regular baking soda.

For gingivitis, decoctions of oak bark, as well as lingonberry fruits or herbs are very effective. These same products can be used for periodontal disease by adding a few drops of hydrogen peroxide to them.

If the disease is too advanced, it is recommended to rinse your mouth two or three times daily with a glass of lukewarm water with two tablespoons of peroxide dissolved in it.

If a pregnant woman develops tonsillitis, which is a very common occurrence during this period, the safest means should be used. These are “Lizobakt” lozenges based on lysozyme and “Tantum Verde” spray containing benzydamine.

Use of Rotokan for sore throat

Rotokan for sore throat is used to rinse the throat. The drug allows you to wash away all pathogenic bacteria from the tonsils and reduce the inflammatory process. The medicine contains components in the form of calendula, chamomile and yarrow.

Each substance performs its specific function:

  • calendula has antiseptic properties. Allows you to quickly destroy microbes in the oral cavity;
  • Chamomile is a hypoallergenic and emollient herb. Its effect is aimed at relieving discomfort in the throat and the inflammatory process;
  • yarrow has anti-inflammatory and bactericidal properties.

Although the medicine contains only herbs, it has a number of contraindications.
Rotocan should not be used for angina in the presence of allergic reactions, increased sensitivity to the components of the drug, impaired liver function and the presence of brain disease. Rotokan is also prohibited for use in women during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The medication should be taken with extreme caution in people with alcohol addiction and children under eighteen years of age, since the composition contains a small alcohol content.

If the patient decides to take this medication for the throat, then the drug should be mixed with a glass of warm water. To prepare the solution, just add one spoon of the product. Rinsing should be done up to four to five times a day. In this case, the duration of the treatment course should be at least five days.

Although Rotokan is prohibited for use in childhood, it is often prescribed as inhalation for laryngitis in children and chronic tonsillitis. To prepare a medicinal solution, you need to take saline and Rotocan in equal proportions, but so that the total volume of the resulting product is three to four milliliters. Inhalations should be performed up to three times a day. The duration of treatment therapy should be from five to seven days.

Indications for use

Imudon is prescribed to relieve infectious processes of the upper respiratory tract, pharynx and oral cavity. We are talking about pathologies such as:

  • inflammation of the gums (periodontal disease, gingivitis and periodontitis);
  • stomatitis;
  • tongue diseases caused by exposure to pathogenic microorganisms (glossitis);
  • dysbacteriosis of the oral cavity;
  • infectious processes resulting from dental operations;
  • periodontal inflammation during the period of adaptation to dental prosthetic structures;
  • pharyngitis, tonsillitis and laryngitis, including chronic ones.

The drug can be prescribed in combination with other medications for the treatment and prevention of exacerbations.

Who should not use it

Prescription of the drug is possible only on the recommendation of a specialist.

Uncontrolled use of immunostimulating drugs leads to disruption of the immune system and a decrease in the body's defenses.

  • Children under three years old;
  • Pregnant women (research on the effect of lysates on a child is not sufficient for the safe use of the medication);
  • In case of individual intolerance to the components in the composition.

Breastfeeding women are advised to discontinue immunostimulant therapy or stop breastfeeding during treatment.

Attention! Use with caution in patients with autoimmune pathologies (lupus erythematosus, scleroderma), blood diseases and bronchial asthma.

Reviews

Let's take a look at several reviews from patients and specialists about Imudon for the treatment of stomatitis found on medical websites.

Lesya, 28 years old

I use Imudon for myself and my husband for pharyngitis and tonsillitis, and for my daughter for stomatitis. The medicine has never let us down, the pain in the mouth disappears quite quickly and recovery comes.

Evgeniy, 62 years old

I have a removable denture in my mouth, which often leads to ulcers. I usually treat myself with antibiotics and rinses. The doctor recently prescribed Imudon to me, and the positive effect came very quickly.

Yulia, 32 years old

This expensive drug, unfortunately, did not live up to my expectations. Neighbor praises Imudon very much and treats the whole family with it. But in my family the drug did not work at all: my tonsillitis did not go away until I started taking antiviral drugs. And my daughter actually developed skin rashes, so Imudon is generally contraindicated for her.

Eleanor, 36 years old

My children often catch stomatitis. I really like the effect of the drug: after the last dose, my daughter has not been sick for a year. I myself tried Imudon for a sore throat and the effect of its use exceeded all my expectations. This drug is a little expensive, but it's worth it.

special instructions

Children with allergies need to take Imudon especially carefully, as the drug can cause an attack of bronchial asthma. It is also worth remembering that there is a threat of Imudon’s influence on a weakened immune system.

Children who are on a salt or low-salt diet should be aware that the product contains 15 mg of sodium in each tablet.

After dissolving the tablet in your mouth, it is recommended not to eat or drink for 1 hour, or at least 30 minutes. Otherwise, the therapeutic effect will not be so strong.

There are no data regarding the effect of the drug on CNS depression.

Instructions for using Imudon

Imudon for angina acts as a local drug that has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. It is prescribed not only for tonsillitis, but also for other diseases such as catarrhal and ulcerative gingivitis, acute and chronic periodontitis, infectious and aphthous stomatitis, ulcerative formations on the mucous membrane of the oral shelf.

Imudon for angina is not prescribed to everyone, as it has a number of limitations such as:

  • increased susceptibility to the components of the drug;
  • period of pregnancy and breastfeeding;
  • children up to three years of age.

The medication is based on bacterial breakdown products. This is why Imudon has such a good antibacterial effect. The technology for preparing tablets is quite complex, and therefore this medicine has a high price.

But how does Imudon help with sore throat? Everything is very simple. When the tablet is dissolved in the mouth, the active component leads to stimulation of the body's natural forces.

Auxiliary components allow the main substances to remain on the mucous membrane and provide a noticeable therapeutic effect within several hours. For Imudon to really help, you need to take it according to a special regimen.

Children from three to fourteen years old are prescribed one tablet every two to three hours. In this case, the total dosage should not exceed six tablets per day. Children over fourteen years of age are prescribed one tablet every hour. In this case, the total dosage should not exceed eight tablets per day. The duration of the treatment course is from seven to ten days.

Imudon is often used as a preventive measure. You need to take six tablets per day every four hours. In this case, prophylaxis should last up to twenty days. These measures to strengthen the immune system should be taken up to three to four times a year.

In some situations, Imudon can cause an allergic reaction in the form of skin rashes and itching. Other side effects such as nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea are also common.

If the patient experiences any symptoms, the drug should be stopped and replaced with another analogue.
